Self-trapping of "necklace-ring" beams in self-focusing kerr media

Metastable soliton necklaces supported by fractional diffraction and competing nonlinearities

We demonstrate that the fractional cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, characterized by its Lévy index, maintains ring-shaped soliton clusters ("necklaces") carrying orbital angular momentum. They can be built, in the respective optical setting, as circular chains of fundamental solitons linked by a vortical phase field. We predict semi-analytically that the metastable necklace-shaped clusters persist, corresponding to a local minimum of an effective potential of interaction between adjacent solitons in the cluster. Systematic simulations corroborate that the clusters stay robust over extremely large propagation distances, even in the presence of strong random perturbations.

Metastability of Quantum Droplet Clusters

We show that metastable ring-shaped clusters can be constructed from two-dimensional quantum droplets in systems described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equations augmented with Lee-Huang-Yang quantum corrections. The clusters exhibit dynamical behavior ranging from contraction to rotation with simultaneous periodic pulsations, or expansion, depending on the initial radius of the necklace pattern and phase shift between adjacent quantum droplets. We show that, using an energy-minimization analysis, one can predict equilibrium values of the cluster radius that correspond to rotation without radial pulsations. In such a regime, the clusters evolve as metastable states, withstanding abrupt variations in the underlying scattering lengths and keeping their azimuthal symmetry in the course of evolution, even in the presence of considerable perturbations.

Dynamics of necklace beams in nonlinear colloidal suspensions

Recently, we have predicted that the modulation instability of optical vortex solitons propagating in nonlinear colloidal suspensions with exponential saturable nonlinearity leads to formation of necklace beams (NBs). Here, we investigate the dynamics of NB formation and propagation, and demonstrate a variety of optical beam structures emerging upon vortex beam propagation in engineered nonlinear colloidal medium. In particular, we show that the distance at which the NB is formed depends on the input power of the vortex beam. Moreover, we show that the NB trajectories are not necessarily tangent to the initial vortex ring, and that their velocities have components stemming both from the beam diffraction and from the beam orbital angular momentum. We also demonstrate the generation of elliptical rotating solitons and analyze the influence of losses on their propagation. Finally, we investigate the conservation of the orbital angular momentum in necklace and elliptical rotating beams. Our studies, performed in ideal lossless media and in realistic colloidal suspensions with losses, provide a detailed description of NB dynamics, and may be useful in analysis of light propagation in highly scattering colloids and biological samples.

Necklace beam generation in nonlinear colloidal engineered media

Modulational instability is a phenomenon that reveals itself as the exponential growth of weak perturbations in the presence of an intense pump beam propagating in a nonlinear medium. It plays a key role in such nonlinear optical processes as supercontinuum generation, light filamentation, rogue waves, and ring (or necklace) beam formation. To date, a majority of studies of these phenomena have focused on light-matter interactions in self-focusing Kerr media existing in nature. However, a large and tunable nonlinear response of a colloidal suspension can be tailored at will by judiciously engineering the optical polarizability. Here, we analytically and numerically show the possibility of necklace beam generation originating from spatial modulational instability of vortex beams in engineered soft-matter nonlinear media with different types of exponential nonlinearity.

Collapse and stability of necklace beams in Kerr media

We investigate the spatial dynamics of optical necklace beams in Kerr media. For powers corresponding to less than the critical power for self-focusing per bead, we experimentally confirm the confinement of these necklace beams as proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 4851 (1998)10.1103/PhysRevLett.81.4851]. At higher powers, we observe a transition from collective necklace behavior to one in which the beads of the necklace collapse independently. We observe that, below the transition power, the perturbed necklace still behaves in a collective manner with coupling between individual beads but that, at higher powers, it undergoes a similar transition to a decoupled state of the necklace.

Self-trapped spatiotemporal necklace-ring solitons in the Ginzburg-Landau equation

We consider a class of self-trapped spatiotemporal solitons: spatiotemporal necklace-ring solitons, whose intensities are azimuthally periodically modulated. We reveal numerically that the spatiotemporal necklace-ring solitons carrying zero, integer, and even fractional angular momentum can be self-trapped over a huge propagation distance in the three-dimensional cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, even in the presence of random perturbations.

Necklacelike solitons in optically induced photonic lattices

We report the first observation of stationary necklacelike solitons. Such necklace structures were realized when a high-order vortex beam was launched appropriately into a two-dimensional optically induced photonic lattice. Our theoretical results obtained with continuous and discrete models show that the necklace solitons resulting from a charge-4 vortex have a pi phase difference between adjacent "pearls" and are formed in an octagon shape. Their stability region is identified.

Quasistable two-dimensional solitons with hidden and explicit vorticity in a medium with competing nonlinearities

We consider basic types of two-dimensional (2D) vortex solitons in a three-wave model combining quadratic chi((2)) and self-defocusing cubic chi((3))(-) nonlinearities. The system involves two fundamental-frequency (FF) waves with orthogonal polarizations and a single second-harmonic (SH) one. The model makes it possible to introduce a 2D soliton, with hidden vorticity (HV). Its vorticities in the two FF components are S(1,2) = +/-1 , whereas the SH carries no vorticity, S(3) = 0 . We also consider an ordinary compound vortex, with 2S(1) = 2S(2) = S(3) = 2 . Without the chi((3))(-) terms, the HV soliton and the ordinary vortex are moderately unstable. Within the propagation distance z approximately 15 diffraction lengths, Z(diffr), the former one turns itself into a usual zero-vorticity (ZV) soliton, while the latter splits into three ZV solitons (the splinters form a necklace pattern, with its own intrinsic dynamics). To gain analytical insight into the azimuthal instability of the HV solitons, we also consider its one-dimensional counterpart, viz., the modulational instability (MI) of a one-dimensional CW (continuous-wave) state with "hidden momentum," i.e., opposite wave numbers in its two components, concluding that such wave numbers may partly suppress the MI. As concerns analytical results, we also find exact solutions for spreading localized vortices in the 2D linear model; in terms of quantum mechanics, these are coherent states with angular momentum (we need these solutions to accurately define the diffraction length of the true solitons). The addition of the chi((3))(-) interaction strongly stabilizes both the HV solitons and the ordinary vortices, helping them to persist over z up to 50 Z(diffr). In terms of the possible experiment, they are completely stable objects. After very long propagation, the HV soliton splits into two ZV solitons, while the vortex with S(3) = 2S(1,2) = 2 splits into a set of three or four ZV solitons.

Two-dimensional solitons with hidden and explicit vorticity in bimodal cubic-quintic media

We demonstrate that two-dimensional two-component bright solitons of an annular shape, carrying vorticities (m,+/-m) in the components, may be stable in media with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity, including the hidden-vorticity (HV) solitons of the type (m,-m) , whose net vorticity is zero. Stability regions for the vortices of both (m,+/-m) types are identified for m=1 , 2, and 3, by dint of the calculation of stability eigenvalues, and in direct simulations. In addition to the well-known symmetry-breaking (external) instability, which splits the ring soliton into a set of fragments flying away in tangential directions, we report two new scenarios of the development of weak instabilities specific to the HV solitons. One features charge flipping, with the two components exchanging angular momentum and periodically reversing the sign of their spins. The composite soliton does not directly split in this case; therefore, we identify such instability as an intrinsic one. Eventually, the soliton splits, as weak radiation loss drives it across the border of the ordinary strong (external) instability. Another scenario proceeds through separation of the vortex cores in the two components, each individual core moving toward the outer edge of the annular soliton. After expulsion of the cores, there remains a zero-vorticity breather with persistent internal vibrations.

Multicolor vortex solitons in two-dimensional photonic lattices

We report on the existence and stability of multicolor lattice vortex solitons constituted by coupled fundamental frequency and second-harmonic waves in optical lattices in quadratic nonlinear media. It is shown that the solitons are stable almost in the entire domain of their existence, and that the instability domain decreases with the increase of the lattice depth. We also show the generation of the solitons, and the feasibility of the concept of lattice soliton algebra.

Robust soliton clusters in media with competing cubic and quintic nonlinearities

Systematic results are reported for dynamics of circular patterns ("necklaces"), composed of fundamental solitons and carrying orbital angular momentum, in the two-dimensional model, which describes the propagation of light beams in bulk media combining self-focusing cubic and self-defocusing quintic nonlinearities. Semianalytical predictions for the existence of quasistable necklace structures are obtained on the basis of an effective interaction potential. Then, direct simulations are run. In the case when the initial pattern is far from an equilibrium size predicted by the potential, it cannot maintain its shape. However, a necklace with the initial shape close to the predicted equilibrium survives very long evolution, featuring persistent oscillations. The quasistable evolution is not essentially disturbed by a large noise component added to the initial configuration. Basic conclusions concerning the necklace dynamics in this model are qualitatively the same as in a recently studied one which combines quadratic and self-defocusing cubic nonlinearities. Thus, we infer that a combination of competing self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities enhances the robustness not only of vortex solitons but also of vorticity-carrying necklace patterns.

Two-dimensional cnoidal waves in Kerr-type saturable nonlinear media

We report theoretically the existence, classification, and basic properties of families of stationary two-dimensional cnoidal-type waves in bulk Kerr-type saturable nonlinear media. The families of two-dimensional cnoidal-type wave solutions are shown to exhibit richer features than their known one-dimensional counterparts. At low- and high-energy flows, the cnoidal patterns are predicted to be robust enough to be observable experimentally.

Soliton molecules in trapped vector nonlinear Schrödinger systems

We propose a method to build a great variety of stable multisoliton "molecules" with coupled light beams in Kerr graded index (GRIN) media or atomic mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates. We present a general theory and discuss several specific cases, including two-, three-, and four-atom molecules made up of Gaussian modes or vortices. A three-dimensional example is also presented.

Stable spatiotemporal spinning solitons in a bimodal cubic-quintic medium

We investigate the formation of stable spatiotemporal three-dimensional (3D) solitons ("light bullets") with internal vorticity ("spin") in a bimodal system described by coupled cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Two relevant versions of the model, for the linear and circular polarizations, are considered. In the former case, an important ingredient of the model are four-wave-mixing terms, which give rise to a phase-sensitive nonlinear coupling between two polarization components. Thresholds for the formation of both spinning and nonspinning 3D solitons are found. Instability growth rates of perturbation eigenmodes with different azimuthal indices are calculated as functions of the solitons' propagation constant. As a result, stability domains in the model's parameter plane are identified for solitons with the values of the spins of their components s=0 and s=1, while all the solitons with s> or =2 are unstable. The solitons with s=1 are stable only if their energy exceeds a certain critical value, so that, in typical cases, the stability region occupies approximately 25% of their existence domain. Direct simulations of the full system produce results that are in perfect agreement with the linear-stability analysis: stable 3D spinning solitons readily self-trap from initial Gaussian pulses with embedded vorticity, and easily heal themselves if strong perturbations are imposed, while unstable spinning solitons quickly split into a set of separating zero-spin fragments whose number is exactly equal to the azimuthal index of the strongest unstable perturbation eigenmode.

Soliton "molecules": robust clusters of spatiotemporal optical solitons

We show how to generate robust self-sustained clusters of soliton bullets-spatiotemporal (optical or matter-wave) solitons. The clusters carry an orbital angular momentum being supported by competing nonlinearities. The "atoms" forming the "molecule" are fully three-dimensional solitons linked via a staircaselike macroscopic phase. Recent progress in generating atomic-molecular coherent mixing in the Bose-Einstein condensates might open potential scenarios for the experimental generation of these soliton molecules with matter waves.

Robust propagation of two-color soliton clusters supported by competing nonlinearities

We reveal numerically the remarkably robust propagation of quasistationary two-color soliton clusters in media with competing quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. We predict that such clusters carrying nonzero angular momentum can propagate over any practically feasible crystal length before they decay, even in the presence of input random perturbations.

Management of the angular momentum of light: preparation of photons in multidimensional vector states of angular momentum

We put forward schemes to prepare photons in multidimensional vector states of orbital angular momentum. We show realizable light distributions that yield prescribed states with finite or infinite normal modes. In particular, we show that suitable light vortex pancakes allow the add-drop of specific vector projections. We suggest that such photons might allow the generation of engineered quNits in multidimensional quantum information systems.

Necklace-ring vector solitons

We introduce novel classes of optical vector solitons that consist of incoherently coupled self-trapped "necklace" beams carrying zero, integer, and even fractional angular momentum. Because of the stabilizing mutual attraction between the components, such stationary localized structures exhibit quasistable propagation for much larger distances than the corresponding scalar vortex solitons and expanding scalar necklace beams.

Integer and fractional angular momentum borne on self-trapped necklace-ring beams

We present self-trapped necklace-ring beams that carry and conserve angular momentum. Such beams can have a fractional ratio of angular momentum to energy, and they exhibit a series of phenomena typically associated with rotation of rigid bodies and centrifugal force effects.
