Event-triggered feedback in noise-driven phase oscillators

Using a stochastic nonlinear phase oscillator model, we study the effect of event-triggered feedback on the statistics of interevent intervals. Events are associated with the entering of a new cycle. The feedback is modeled by an instantaneous increase (positive feedback) or decrease (negative feedback) of the oscillator frequency whenever an event occurs followed by an exponential decay on a slow time scale. In addition to the known excitable and oscillatory regimes, which are separated by a saddle node on invariant circle bifurcation, positive feedback can lead to bistable dynamics and a change of the system's excitability. The feedback has also a strong effect on noise-induced phenomena like coherence resonance or anticoherence resonance. Both positive and negative feedback can lead to more regular output for particular noise strengths. Finally, we investigate serial correlations in the sequence of interevent intervals that occur due to the additional slow dynamics. We derive approximations for the serial correlation coefficient and show that positive feedback results in extended positive interval correlations, whereas negative feedback yields short-ranging negative correlations. Investigating the interplay of feedback and the nonlinear phase dynamics close to the bifurcation, we find that correlations are most pronounced for optimal feedback strengths.

On the Poincaré–Hill cycle map of rotational random walk: locating the stochastic limit cycle in a reversible Schnakenberg model

Recent studies on stochastic oscillations mostly focus on the power spectral analysis. However, the power spectrum yields information only on the frequency of oscillation and cannot differentiate between a stable limit cycle and a stable focus. The cycle flux, introduced by Hill (Hill 1989 Free energy transduction and biochemical cycle kinetics ), is a quantitative measure of the net movement over a closed path, but it is impractical to compute for all possible cycles in systems with a large state space. Through simple examples, we introduce concepts used to quantify stochastic oscillation, such as the cycle flux, the Hill–Qian stochastic circulation and rotation number. We introduce a novel device, the Poincaré–Hill cycle map (PHCM), which combines the concept of Hill’s cycle flux with the Poincaré map from nonlinear dynamics. Applying the PHCM to a reversible extension of an oscillatory chemical system, the Schnakenberg model, reveals stable oscillations outside the Hopf bifurcation region in which the deterministic system contains a limit cycle. Bistable behaviour is found on the small volume scale with high probabilities around both the fixed point and the limit cycle. Convergence to the deterministic system is found in the thermodynamic limit.

Coherence resonance versus synchronization in a periodically forced self-sustained system

A fundamental relationship between coherence resonance (CR) and phase synchronization in a self-sustained system in the presence of noise is addressed. A Van der Pol system synchronized by external forcing is taken as an example. It is shown that, in breaking down synchronization, applied noise creates a new ordered motion whose coherence depends resonantly on its intensity, i.e., CR occurs. The same is true for both types of synchronization, via phase locking and via suppression: only the mechanisms of CR differ. The result is valid for any order n:m of synchronization.

Rotation number, stochastic resonance, and synchronization of coupled systems without periodic driving

This article investigates the influence of noise in a two-dimensional square array of coupled nonlinear oscillators without periodic driving. Array enhanced stochastic resonance under global as well as local noise perturbation is shown to exist under a crucial condition: the value of the rotation number of the deterministic system being zero. Meanwhile, the stochastic synchronization phenomenon is displayed in a wide range of noise intensity whether noise is added globally or locally. Furthermore, for every oscillator, the peak frequency is shown to agree with the rotation number much better than in the uncoupled system.
