Energy relaxation in nonlinear one-dimensional lattices

Energy thresholds of discrete breathers in thermal equilibrium and relaxation processes

So far, only the energy thresholds of single discrete breathers in nonlinear Hamiltonian systems have been analytically obtained. In this work, the energy thresholds of discrete breathers in thermal equilibrium and the energy thresholds of long-lived discrete breathers which can remain after a long time relaxation are analytically estimated for nonlinear chains. These energy thresholds are size dependent. The energy thresholds of discrete breathers in thermal equilibrium are the same as the previous analytical results for single discrete breathers. The energy thresholds of long-lived discrete breathers in relaxation processes are different from the previous results for single discrete breathers but agree well with the published numerical results known to us. Because real systems are either in thermal equilibrium or in relaxation processes, the obtained results could be important for experimental detection of discrete breathers.

Sustained strong fluctuations in a nonlinear chain at acoustic vacuum: beyond equilibrium

Here we consider dynamical problems as in linear response theory but for purely nonlinear systems where acoustic propagation is prohibited by the potential, e.g., the case of an alignment of elastic grains confined between walls. Our simulations suggest that in the absence of acoustic propagation, the system relaxes using only solitary waves and the eventual state does not resemble an equilibrium state. Further, the studies reveal that multiple perturbations could give rise to hot and cold spots in these systems. We first use particle dynamics based simulations to understand how one of the two unequal colliding solitary waves in the chain can gain energy. Specifically, we find that for head-on collisions the smaller wave gains energy, whereas when a more energetic wave overtakes a less energetic wave, the latter gains energy. The balance between the rate at which the solitary waves break down and the rate at which they grow eventually makes it possible for the system to reach a peculiar equilibriumlike phase that is characteristic of these purely nonlinear systems. The study of the features and the robustness of the fluctuations in time has been addressed next. A particular characteristic of this equilibriumlike or quasiequilibrium phase is that very large energy fluctuations are possible--and by very large, we mean that the energy can vary between zero and several times the average energy per grain. We argue that the magnitude of the fluctuations depend on the nature of the nonlinearity in the potential energy function and the feature that any energy must eventually travel as a compact solitary wave in these systems where the solitary wave energies may vary widely. In closing we address whether these fluctuations are peculiar to one dimension or can exist in higher dimensions. The study hence raises the following intriguing possibility. Are there physical or biological systems where these kinds of nonlinear forces exist, and if so, can such large fluctuations actually be seen? Implications of the study are briefly discussed.

Intrinsic energy localization through discrete gap breathers in one-dimensional diatomic granular crystals

We present a systematic study of the existence and stability of discrete breathers that are spatially localized in the bulk of a one-dimensional chain of compressed elastic beads that interact via Hertzian contact. The chain is diatomic, consisting of a periodic arrangement of heavy and light spherical particles. We examine two families of discrete gap breathers: (1) an unstable discrete gap breather that is centered on a heavy particle and characterized by a symmetric spatial energy profile and (2) a potentially stable discrete gap breather that is centered on a light particle and is characterized by an asymmetric spatial energy profile. We investigate their existence, structure, and stability throughout the band gap of the linear spectrum and classify them into four regimes: a regime near the lower optical band edge of the linear spectrum, a moderately discrete regime, a strongly discrete regime that lies deep within the band gap of the linearized version of the system, and a regime near the upper acoustic band edge. We contrast discrete breathers in anharmonic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU)-type diatomic chains with those in diatomic granular crystals, which have a tensionless interaction potential between adjacent particles, and note that the asymmetric nature of the tensionless interaction potential can lead to hybrid bulk-surface localized solutions.

Localized breathing modes in granular crystals with defects

We study localized modes in uniform one-dimensional chains of tightly packed and uniaxially compressed elastic beads in the presence of one or two light-mass impurities. For chains composed of beads of the same type, the intrinsic nonlinearity, which is caused by the Hertzian interaction of the beads, appears not to support localized, breathing modes. Consequently, the inclusion of light-mass impurities is crucial for their appearance. By analyzing the problem's linear limit, we identify the system's eigenfrequencies and the linear defect modes. Using continuation techniques, we find the solutions that bifurcate from their linear counterparts and study their linear stability in detail. We observe that the nonlinearity leads to a frequency dependence in the amplitude of the oscillations, a static mutual displacement of the parts of the chain separated by a defect, and for chains with two defects that are not in contact, it induces symmetry-breaking bifurcations.

Long-range energy transfer in proteins

Proteins are large and complex molecular machines. In order to perform their function, most of them need energy, e.g. either in the form of a photon, as in the case of the visual pigment rhodopsin, or through the breaking of a chemical bond, as in the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Such energy, in turn, has to be transmitted to specific locations, often several tens of A away from where it is initially released. Here we show, within the framework of a coarse-grained nonlinear network model, that energy in a protein can jump from site to site with high yields, covering in many instances remarkably large distances. Following single-site excitations, few specific sites are targeted, systematically within the stiffest regions. Such energy transfers mark the spontaneous formation of a localized mode of nonlinear origin at the destination site, which acts as an efficient energy-accumulating center. Interestingly, yields are found to be optimum for excitation energies in the range of biologically relevant ones.

Thermal conductivity, relaxation and low-frequency vibrational mode anomalies in glasses: a model using the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam nonlinear Hamiltonian

We present a nonlinear model that allows exploration of the relationship between energy relaxation, thermal conductivity and the excess of low-frequency vibrational modes (LFVMs) that are present in glasses. The model is a chain of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) type, with nonlinear second neighbour springs added at random. We show that the time for relaxation is increased as LFVMs are removed, while the thermal conductivity diminishes. These results are important in order to understand the role of the cooling speed and thermal conductivity during glass transition. Also, the model provides evidence for the fundamental importance of LFVMs in the FPU problem.

Dynamics of metastable breathers in nonlinear chains in acoustic vacuum

The study of the dynamics of one-dimensional chains with both harmonic and nonlinear interactions, as in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam and related problems, has played a central role in efforts to identify the broad consequences of nonlinearity in these systems. Nevertheless, little is known about the dynamical behavior of purely nonlinear chains where there is a complete absence of the harmonic term, and hence sound propagation is not admissible, i.e., under conditions of "acoustic vacuum." Here we study the dynamics of highly localized excitations, or breathers, which are known to be initiated by the quasistatic stretching of the bonds between adjacent particles. We show via detailed particle-dynamics-based studies that many low-energy pulses also form in the vicinity of the perturbation, and the breathers that form are "fragile" in the sense that they can be easily delocalized by scattering events in the system. We show that the localized excitations eventually disperse, allowing the system to attain an equilibrium-like state that is realizable in acoustic vacuum. We conclude with a discussion of how the dynamics is affected by the presence of acoustic oscillations.

Thermal relaxation and low-frequency vibrational anomalies in simple models of glasses: a study using nonlinear Hamiltonians

Glasses exist because they are not able to relax in a laboratory time scale toward the most stable structure: a crystal. At the same time, glasses present low-frequency vibrational-mode (LFVM) anomalies. We explore in a systematic way how the number of such modes influences thermal relaxation in one-dimensional models of glasses. The model is a Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain with nonlinear springs that join second neighbors at random, which mimics the adding of bond constraints in the rigidity theory of glasses. The corresponding number of LFVMs decreases linearly with the concentration of these springs, and thus their effect upon thermal relaxation can be studied in a systematic way. To do so, we performed numerical simulations using lattices that were thermalized and afterwards placed in contact with a zero-temperature bath. The results indicate that the time required for thermal relaxation has two contributions: one depends on the number of LFVMs and the other on the localization of modes due to disorder. By removing LFVMs, relaxation becomes less efficient since the cascade mechanism that transfers energy between modes is stopped. On the other hand, normal-mode localization also increases the time required for relaxation. We prove this last point by comparing periodic and nonperiodic chains that have the same number of LFVMs.

q-breathers in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chains: existence, localization, and stability

The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) problem consists of the nonequipartition of energy among normal modes of a weakly anharmonic atomic chain model. In the harmonic limit, each normal mode corresponds to a periodic orbit in phase space and is characterized by its wave number q. We continue normal modes from the harmonic limit into the FPU parameter regime and obtain persistence of these periodic orbits, termed here q-breathers (QB). They are characterized by time periodicity, exponential localization in the q-space of normal modes, and linear stability up to a size-dependent threshold amplitude. Trajectories computed in the original FPU setting are perturbations around these exact QB solutions. The QB concept is applicable to other nonlinear lattices as well.

Breathers and thermal relaxation as a temporal process: a possible way to detect breathers in experimental situations

Breather stability and longevity in thermally relaxing nonlinear arrays is investigated under the scrutiny of the analysis and tools employed for time series and state reconstruction of a dynamical system. We briefly review the methods used in the analysis and characterize a breather in terms of the results obtained with such methods. Our present work focuses on spontaneously appearing breathers in thermal Fermi-Pasta-Ulam arrays but we believe that the conclusions are general enough to describe many other related situations; the particular case described in detail is presented as another example of systems where three incommensurable frequencies dominate their chaotic dynamics (reminiscent of the Ruelle-Takens scenario for the appearance of chaotic behavior in nonlinear systems). This characterization may also be of great help for the discovery of breathers in experimental situations where the temporal evolution of a local variable (like the site energy) is the only available/measured data.

The anti-FPU problem

We present a detailed analysis of the modulational instability of the zone-boundary mode for one and higher-dimensional Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) lattices. Following this instability, a process of relaxation to equipartition takes place, which we have called the Anti-FPU problem because the energy is initially fed into the highest frequency part of the spectrum, at variance with the original FPU problem (low frequency excitations of the lattice). This process leads to the formation of chaotic breathers in both one and two dimensions. Finally, the system relaxes to energy equipartition on time scales which increase as the energy density is decreased. We show that breathers formed when cooling the lattice at the edges, starting from a random initial state, bear strong qualitative similarities with chaotic breathers.

Role of breathers in anomalous decay

We have previously presented evidence for the formation of breathers in doped alkali halides subjected to a flash of UV light. Properties of these breathers, their phase space structure, robustness, decay, and propensity for formation, are studied here. Under a wide range of parameters and interionic potentials they form two-dimensional Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser tori (less than generic) in phase space. Strobed views of these tori, useful in quantization, are shown. All features support the thesis of breather formation as the explanation for the luminescence decay anomaly that first motivated our breather proposal.

Cooling nonlinear lattices toward energy localization

We describe the energy relaxation process produced by surface damping on lattices of classical anharmonic oscillators. Spontaneous emergence of localized vibrations dramatically slows down dissipation and gives rise to quasistationary states where energy is trapped in the form of a gas of weakly interacting discrete breathers. In one dimension, strong enough on-site coupling may yield stretched-exponential relaxation which is reminiscent of glassy dynamics. We illustrate the mechanism generating localized structures and discuss the crucial role of the boundary conditions. For two-dimensional lattices, the existence of a gap in the breather spectrum causes the localization process to become activated. A statistical analysis of the resulting quasistationary state through the distribution of breathers' energies yield information on their effective interactions.

Breathers and thermal relaxation in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam arrays

Breather stability and longevity in thermally relaxing nonlinear arrays depend sensitively on their interactions with other excitations. We review numerical results for the relaxation of breathers in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam arrays, with a specific focus on the different relaxation channels and their dependence on the interparticle interactions, dimensionality, initial condition, and system parameters.

Asymptotic dynamics of breathers in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chains

We carry out a numerical study of the asymptotic dynamics of breathers in finite Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chains at zero and nonzero temperatures. While at zero temperature such breathers remain essentially stationary and decay extremely slowly over wide parameter ranges, thermal fluctuations tend to lead to breather motion and more rapid decay. In both cases the decay is essentially exponential over long time intervals.

Interaction of a discrete breather with a lattice junction

We study the scattering of a moving discrete breather (DB) on a junction in a Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain consisting of two segments with different masses of the particles. We consider four distinct cases: (i) a light-heavy (abrupt) junction in which the DB impinges on the junction from the segment with lighter mass, (ii) a heavy-light junction, (iii) an up mass ramp in which the mass in the heavier segment increases continuously as one moves away from the junction point, and (iv) a down mass ramp. Depending on the mass difference and DB characteristics (frequency and velocity), the DB can either reflect from, or transmit through, or get trapped at the junction or on the ramp. For the heavy-light junction, the DB can even split at the junction into a reflected and a transmitted DB. The latter is found to subsequently split into two or more DBs. For the down mass ramp the DB gets accelerated in several stages, with accompanying radiation (phonons). These results are rationalized by calculating the Peierls-Nabarro barrier for the various cases. We also point out implications of our results in realistic situations such as electron-phonon coupled chains.

Slow relaxation, confinement, and solitons

Millisecond crystal relaxation has been used to explain anomalous decay in doped alkali halides. We attribute this slowness to Fermi-Pasta-Ulam solitons. Our model exhibits confinement of mechanical energy released by excitation. Extending the model to long times is justified by its relation to solitons, excitations previously proposed to occur in alkali halides. Soliton damping and observation are also discussed.
