On-Off Intermittency in a Three-Species Food Chain

The environment affects population dynamics through multiple drivers. Here we explore a simplified version of such influence in a three-species food chain, making use of the Hastings–Powell model. This represents an idealized resource–consumer–predator chain, or equivalently, a vegetation–host–parasitoid system. By stochastically perturbing the value of some parameters in this dynamical system, we observe dramatic modifications in the system behavior. In particular, we show the emergence of on–off intermittency, i.e., an irregular alternation between stable phases and sudden bursts in population size, which hints towards a possible conceptual description of population outbursts grounded into an environment-driven mechanism.

On-off intermittency and criticality in early stage electromigration

We have studied here using high resolution resistance measurements the time and statistical behavior of abrupt resistance changes in a thin metal aluminum film undergoing electromigration. We reveal for the first time that early stage electromigration exhibits on-off intermittency. The intermittent resistance fluctuations are also shown to be scale invariant, an effect seen in the fluctuations of several physical systems including earthquakes, superconductor dynamics and stock markets. Finite size scaling of the resistance fluctuations demonstrates that they originate near a critical point.

Multifractality and heart rate variability

In this paper, we participate to the discussion set forth by the editor of Chaos for the controversy, "Is the normal heart rate chaotic?" Our objective was to debate the question, "Is there some more appropriate term to characterize the heart rate variability (HRV) fluctuations?" We focused on the approximately 24 h RR series prepared for this topic and tried to verify with two different techniques, generalized structure functions and wavelet transform modulus maxima, if they might be described as being multifractal. For normal and congestive heart failure subjects, the h(q) exponents showed to be decreasing for increasing q with both methods, as it should be for multifractal signals. We then built 40 surrogate series to further verify such hypothesis. For most of the series (approximately 75%-80% of cases) multifractality stood the test of the surrogate data employed. On the other hand, series coming from patients in atrial fibrillation showed a small, if any, degree of multifractality. The population analyzed is too small for definite conclusions, but the study supports the use of multifractal series to model HRV. Also it suggests that the regulatory action of autonomous nervous system might play a role in the observed multifractality.

Entropy of seismic electric signals: analysis in natural time under time reversal

Electric signals have been recently recorded at the Earth's surface with amplitudes appreciably larger than those hitherto reported. Their entropy in natural time is smaller than that of a "uniform" distribution. The same holds for their entropy upon time reversal. Such a behavior, which is also found by numerical simulations in fractional Brownian motion time series and in an on-off intermittency model, stems from infinitely ranged long range temporal correlations and hence these signals are probably seismic electric signal activities (critical dynamics). This classification is strikingly confirmed since three strong nearby earthquakes occurred (which is an extremely unusual fact) after the original submission of the present paper. The entropy fluctuations are found to increase upon approaching bursting, which is reminiscent of the behavior identifying sudden cardiac death individuals when analyzing their electrocardiograms.

The phase-modulated logistic map

We study the logistic mapping with the nonlinearity parameter varied through a delayed feedback mechanism. This history dependent modulation through a phaselike variable offers an enhanced possibility for stabilization of periodic dynamics. Study of the system as a function of nonlinearity and modulation parameters reveals new phenomena: In addition to period-doubling and tangent bifurcations, there can be bifurcations where the period increases by unity. These are extensions of crises that arise in nonlinear dynamical systems. Periodic orbits in this system can be systematized via the kneading theory, which in the present case extends the analysis of Metropolis, Stein, and Stein for unimodal maps.

Intermittent Single-Molecule Interfacial Electron Transfer Dynamics

We report on single-molecule studies of photosensitized interfacial electron transfer (ET) processes in Coumarin 343 (C343)-TiO(2) nanoparticles (NP) and Cresyl Violet (CV(+))-TiO(2) NP systems, using time-correlated single-photon counting coupled with scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy. Fluorescence intensity trajectories of individual dye molecules adsorbed on a semiconductor NP surface showed fluorescence fluctuations and blinking, with time constants distributed from milliseconds to seconds. The fluorescence fluctuation dynamics were found to be inhomogeneous from molecule to molecule and from time to time, showing significant static and dynamic disorders in the interfacial ET reaction dynamics. We attribute fluorescence fluctuations to the interfacial ET reaction rate fluctuations, associating redox reactivity intermittency with the fluctuations of molecule-TiO(2) electronic and Franck-Condon coupling. Intermittent interfacial ET dynamics of individual molecules could be characteristic of a surface chemical reaction strongly involved with and regulated by molecule-surface interactions. The intermittent interfacial reaction dynamics that likely occur among single molecules in other interfacial and surface chemical processes can typically be observed by single-molecule studies but not by conventional ensemble-averaged experiments.

Control of on-off intermittency by slow parametric modulation

We study on-off intermittent behavior in two coupled double-well Duffing oscillators with stochastic driving and demonstrate that, by using slow harmonic modulation applied to an accessible system parameter, the intermittent attractors can be completely eliminated. The influence of noise is also investigated. Power-law scaling of the average laminar time with a critical exponent of -1 as a function of both the amplitude and frequency of the control modulation is found near the onset of intermittency, which is a signature of on-off intermittency.
