Ground state of a polydisperse electrorheological solid: beyond the dipole approximation

Describing phase transitions in field theory by self-similar approximants

Self-similar approximation theory is shown to be a powerful tool for describing phase transitions in quantum field theory. Self-similar approximants present the extrapolation of asymptotic series in powers of small variables to the arbitrary values of the latter, including the variables tending to infinity. The approach is illustrated by considering three problems: (i) The influence of the coupling parameter strength on the critical temperature of the O(N)-symmetric multicomponent field theory. (ii) The calculation of critical exponents for the phase transition in the O(N)-symmetric field theory. (iii) The evaluation of deconfinement temperature in quantum chromodynamics. The results are in good agreement with the available numerical calculations, such as Monte Carlo simulations, Padé-Borel summation, and lattice data.

A new method of chaining carbon nanofibers in epoxy

In this paper, a new and innovative process for assembling chains of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) in epoxy, uniquely different from those generally used for chaining particles in a liquid medium, is presented. Chains of aligned CNFs are assembled in a region rich in CNFs and extended into regions where there are no CNFs. A physical explanation of the process is provided based on the conductive nature of the CNFs. By contacting the chains with the electrodes, the process of chain growth is expedited and well-ordered parallel chains with equal spacing are grown over distances of 2 cm.

Structural transition in bidispersed electrorheological fluids

We present results from finite element calculations on electrorheological fluids consisting of bidispersed dielectric microspheres and nanoparticles suspended in liquid, with one type much smaller than the other. The face-centered-cubic (fcc) structure of the larger microspheres is shown to be the ground state when the volume concentration of the nanoparticles is between 3-5 %. This is in contrast to the usual situation in which the body-centered-tetragonal (bct) structure is the lowest-energy state. As a function of the nanoparticles' concentration, the bct-fcc structural transition occurs when the nanoparticles' dielectric constant exceeds a threshold value, leading to the electrostatic energy curves of the two structures crossing each other.

Nonlinear Alternating Current Responses of Electrorheological Solids

When a composite containing nonlinear dielectric particles suspended in a host medium is subjected to a sinusoidal alternating current (ac) electric field, the dielectric response of the composite will generally consist of ac fields at frequencies of higher order harmonics. For an electrorheological (ER) solid under structure transformations due to external fields, we apply the Ewald-Kornfeld formulation to derive the local electric fields and induced dipole moments explicitly, and then we perform the perturbation expansion method to extract their fundamental and third-order harmonics analytically. It is shown that the degree of anisotropy of the ER solid can affect these harmonics significantly. Our results are well understood in the spectral representation theory. Thus, it seems possible to perform a real-time monitoring of the structure transformation by measuring the nonlinear ac responses of ER solids.

Interparticle force in electrorheological solids: many-body dipole-induced dipole model

One often investigates electrorheological (ER) solids by using the point-dipole (PD) approximation, which, however, is known to err considerably for touching particles due to the existence of many-body (local-field) effects and multipolar interactions. Beyond the PD model, previous attempts have been restricted to either local-field effects only or multipolar interactions only, but not both. In the present work, we have developed a many-body dipole-induced dipole model for an ER solid the lattice structure of which can be changed due to the application of external fields, in an attempt to take into account both local-field effects and multipolar interactions. The results show that the multipolar interaction can indeed be dominant over the dipolar interaction, while the local-field effect may yield an important correction. Also, the results are well understood with the aid of spectral representation theory.

Nonlinear ac responses of electro-magnetorheological fluids

We apply a Langevin model to investigate the nonlinear ac responses of electro-magnetorheological (ERMR) fluids under the application of two crossed dc magnetic (z axis) and electric (x axis) fields and a probing ac sinusoidal magnetic field. We focus on the influence of the magnetic fields which can yield nonlinear behaviors inside the system due to the particles with a permanent magnetic dipole moment. Based on a perturbation approach, we extract the harmonics of the magnetic field and orientational magnetization analytically. To this end, we find that the harmonics are sensitive to the degree of anisotropy of the structure as well as the field frequency. Thus, it is possible to real-time-monitor the structure transformation of ERMR fluids by detecting the nonlinear ac responses.

Electrokinetic behavior of two touching inhomogeneous biological cells and colloidal particles: effects of multipolar interactions

We present a theory to investigate electrokinetic behavior, namely, electrorotation and dielectrophoresis under alternating current (ac) applied fields for a pair of touching inhomogeneous colloidal particles and biological cells. These inhomogeneous particles are treated as graded ones with physically motivated model dielectric and conductivity profiles. The mutual polarization interaction between the particles yields a change in their respective dipole moments, and hence in the ac electrokinetic spectra. The multipolar interactions between polarized particles are accurately captured by the multiple images method. In the point-dipole limit, our theory reproduces the known results. We find that the multipolar interactions as well as the spatial fluctuations inside the particles can affect the ac electrokinetic spectra significantly.
