Absolute transverse mobility and ratchet effect on periodic two-dimensional symmetric substrates

Directional locking in a two-dimensional Yukawa solid modulated by a two-dimensional periodic substrate

Directional depinning dynamics of a two-dimensional (2D) dusty plasma solid modulated by a 2D square periodic substrate are investigated using Langevin dynamical simulations. We observe prominent directional locking effects when the direction of the external driving force is varied relative to the underlying square substrate. These locking steps appear when the direction of the driving force is close to the symmetry direction of the substrate, corresponding to the different dynamical flow patterns and the structures. In the conditions between the adjacent locking steps, moving ordered states are observed. Although the discontinuous transitions often occur between the locking steps and the nonlocking portion, the continuous transitions are also found around the locking step associated with the disordered plastic flow close to its termini. Our results show that directional locking also occurs for underdamped systems, which could be tested experimentally in dusty plasmas modulated by 2D substrates.

Substrate induced freezing, melting and depinning transitions in two-dimensional liquid crystalline systems

We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the ordering phenomena in two-dimensional (2D) liquid crystals over the one-dimensional periodic substrate (1DPS). We have used Gay-Berne (GB) potential to model the interaction between a pair of liquid crystalline (LC) particles. The underlying substrate potential with which the GB particles interact varies sinusoidally in one direction only. At a given temperature and density of the GB system, we varied the substrate's periodicity (a_s) but fixed the substrate strength. We observed that with a small value of a_s, an underlying substrate helps to stabilize a disordered LC nematic phase to a 2D solid phase. However, for an intermediate range of a_s, the system melts and transitions to a modulate-smectic. Finally, with a further increase in a_s, the system undergoes a structural depinning transition and returns to an LC nematic phase like a free system with no substrate. We argue that a three-way interplay of the energies arising from orientation-dependent particle-particle and particle-substrate interaction makes it possible for the system to undergo substrate-periodicity-dependent multiple phase transitions in the GB LC system.

Disordering, clustering, and laning transitions in particle systems with dispersion in the Magnus term

We numerically examine a two-dimensional system of repulsively interacting particles with dynamics that are governed by both a damping term and a Magnus term. The magnitude of the Magnus term has one value for half of the particles and a different value for the other half of the particles. In the absence of a driving force, the particles form a triangular lattice, while when a driving force is applied, we find that there is a critical drive above which a Magnus-induced disordering transition can occur even if the difference in the Magnus term between the two particle species is as small as one percent. The transition arises due to the different Hall angles of the two species, which causes their motion to decouple at the critical drive. At higher drives, the disordered state can undergo both species and density phase separation into a density-modulated stripe that is oriented perpendicular to the driving direction. We observe several additional phases that occur as a function of drive and Magnus force disparity, including a variety of density-modulated diagonal-laned phases. In general, we find a much richer variety of states compared to systems of oppositely driven overdamped Yukawa particles. We discuss the implications of our work for skyrmion systems, where we predict that even for small skyrmion dispersities, a drive-induced disordering transition can occur along with clustering phases and pattern-forming states.

Simultaneous Control of Multispecies Particle Transport and Segregation in Driven Lattices

We provide a generic scheme to separate the particles of a mixture by their physical properties like mass, friction, or size. The scheme employs a periodically shaken two-dimensional dissipative lattice and hinges on a simultaneous transport of particles in species-specific directions. This selective transport is achieved by controlling the late-time nonlinear particle dynamics, via the attractors embedded in the phase space and their bifurcations. To illustrate the spectrum of possible applications of the scheme, we exemplarily demonstrate the separation of polydisperse colloids and mixtures of cold thermal alkali atoms in optical lattices.

Dimensional coupling-induced current reversal in two-dimensional driven lattices

We show that the direction of directed particle transport in a two-dimensional ac-driven lattice can be dynamically reversed by changing the structure of the lattice in the direction perpendicular to the applied driving force. These structural changes introduce dimensional coupling effects, the strength of which governs the timescale of the current reversals. The underlying mechanism is based on the fact that dimensional coupling allows the particles to explore regions of phase space which are inaccessible otherwise. The experimental realization for cold atoms in ac-driven optical lattices is discussed.

Collective ratchet effects and reversals for active matter particles on quasi-one-dimensional asymmetric substrates

Using computer simulations, we study a two-dimensional system of sterically interacting self-mobile run-and-tumble disk-shaped particles with an underlying periodic quasi-one-dimensional asymmetric substrate, and show that a rich variety of collective active ratchet behaviors arise as a function of particle density, activity, substrate period, and the maximum force exerted by the substrate. The net dc drift, or ratchet transport flux, is nonmonotonic since it increases with increased activity but is diminished by the onset of self-clustering of the active particles. Increasing the particle density decreases the ratchet transport flux for shallow substrates but increases the ratchet transport flux for deep substrates due to collective hopping events. At the highest particle densities, the ratchet motion is destroyed by a self-jamming effect. We show that it is possible to realize reversals of the direction of the net dc drift in the deep substrate limit when multiple rows of active particles can be confined in each substrate minimum, permitting emergent particle-like excitations to appear that experience an inverted effective substrate potential. We map out a phase diagram of the forward and reverse ratchet effects as a function of the particle density, activity, and substrate properties.

Active matter ratchets with an external drift

When active matter particles such as swimming bacteria are placed in an asymmetric array of funnels, it has been shown that a ratchet effect can occur even in the absence of an external drive. Here we examine active ratchets for two-dimensional arrays of funnels or L shapes where there is also an externally applied dc drive or drift. We show that for certain conditions the ratchet effect can be strongly enhanced and it is possible to have conditions under which run-and-tumble particles with one run length move in the opposite direction from particles with a different run length. For the arrays of L shapes, we find that the application of a drift force can enhance a transverse rectification in the direction perpendicular to the drift. When particle-particle steric interactions are included, we find that the ratchet effects can be either enhanced or suppressed depending on barrier geometry, particle run length, and particle density.

Dynamics and separation of circularly moving particles in asymmetrically patterned arrays

There are many examples of driven and active matter systems containing particles that exhibit circular motion with different chiralities, such as swimming bacteria near surfaces or certain types of self-driven colloidal particles. Circular motion of passive particles can also be induced with an external rotating drive. Here we examine particles that move in circles and interact with a periodic array of asymmetric L-shaped obstacles. We find a series of dynamical phases as a function of swimming radius, including regimes where the particle motion is rectified, producing a net dc motion. The direction of the rectification varies with the swimming radius, permitting the separation of particles with different swimming radii. Particles with the same swimming radius but different chirality can also move in different directions over the substrate and be separated. The rectification occurs for specific windows of swimming radii corresponding to periodic orbits in which the particles interact one or more times with the barriers per rotation cycle. The rectification effects are robust against the addition of thermal or diffusive effects, and are in some cases even enhanced by these effects.

Structural transitions and dynamical regimes for directional locking of vortices and colloids driven over periodic substrates

We examine collective dynamical locking effects for superconducting vortices and colloids interacting with square and triangular substrate arrays under a slowly rotated dc drive. A rich variety of lattice configurations associated with a series of steps in the velocity-force curves occur during the locking transitions. These include triangular, square, smectic, and disordered particle arrangements that can be identified using the structure factor. We show that the step widths vary with the ratio of the number of particles to the number of pinning sites. Unlike a static system, where matching effects occur at simple integer commensuration ratios, we find dynamical commensuration effects that arise when an integer number of particle chains flow between rows of pins. We identify two distinct types of locking as a function of substrate strength, distinguished by whether the particles flow along or between the pinning rows.

Positive and negative drag, dynamic phases, and commensurability in coupled one-dimensional channels of particles with Yukawa interactions

We introduce a simple model consisting of two or three coupled one-dimensional channels of particles with Yukawa interactions. For the two-channel system, when an external drive is applied only to the top or primary channel, we find a transition from locked flow, where particles in both channels move together, to decoupled flow, where the particles in the secondary or undriven channel move at a slower velocity than the particles in the primary or driven channel. Pronounced commensurability effects in the decoupling transition occur when the ratio of the number of particles in the top and bottom channels is varied, and the coupling of the two channels is enhanced when this ratio is an integer or a rational fraction. Near the commensurate fillings, we find additional features in the velocity-force curves caused by the slipping of individual vacancies or incommensurations in the secondary channels. For three coupled channels, when only the top channel is driven we find a remarkably rich variety of distinct dynamic phases, including multiple decoupling and recoupling transitions. These transitions produce pronounced signatures in the velocity response of each channel. We also find regimes where a negative drag effect can be induced in one of the nondriven channels. The particles in this channel move in the opposite direction from the particles in the driven channel due to the mixing of the two different periodic frequencies produced by the discrete motion of the particles in the two other channels. In the two-channel system, we also demonstrate a ratchet effect for the particles in the secondary channel when an asymmetric drive is applied to the primary channel. This ratchet effect is similar to that observed in superconducting vortex systems when there is a coupling between two different species of vortices.

Directing Brownian motion on a periodic surface

We consider an overdamped Brownian particle, exposed to a two-dimensional, square lattice potential and a rectangular ac drive. Depending on the driving amplitude, the linear response to a weak dc force along a lattice symmetry axis consist in a mobility in basically any direction. In particular, motion exactly opposite to the applied dc force may arise. Upon changing the angle of the dc force relatively to the square lattice, the particle motion remains predominantly opposite to the dc force. The basic physical mechanism consists in a spontaneous symmetry breaking of the unbiased deterministic particle dynamics.

Dynamics of a paramagnetic colloidal particle driven on a magnetic-bubble lattice

We present a theoretical study of the recently observed dynamical regimes of paramagnetic colloidal particles externally driven above a regular lattice of magnetic bubbles [P. Tierno, T. H. Johansen, and T. M. Fischer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 038303 (2007)]. An external precessing magnetic field alters the potential generated by the surface of the film in such a way to either drive the particle circularly around one bubble, ballistically through the array, or in triangular orbits on the interstitial regions between the bubbles. In the ballistic regime, we observe different trajectories performed by the particles phase locked with the external driving. Superdiffusive motion, which was experimentally found bridging the localized and delocalized dynamics, emerge only by introducing a certain degree of randomness into the bubbles size distribution.

Ratchet effect and nonlinear transport for particles on random substrates with crossed ac drives

We show in simulations that overdamped interacting particles in two dimensions with a randomly disordered substrate can exhibit novel nonequilibrium transport phenomena including a transverse ratchet effect, where a combined dc drive and circular ac drive produce a drift velocity in the direction transverse to the applied dc drive. The random disorder does not break any global symmetry; however, in two dimensions, symmetry breaking occurs due to the chirality of the circular drive. In addition to inducing the transverse ratchet effect, increasing the ac amplitude also strongly affects the longitudinal velocity response and can produce what we term an overshoot effect where the longitudinal dc velocity is higher in the presence of the ac drive than it would be for a dc drive alone. We also find a dynamical reordering transition upon increasing the ac amplitude. In the absence of a dc drive, it is possible to obtain a ratchet effect when the combined ac drives produce particle orbits that break a reflection symmetry. In this case, as the ac amplitude increases, current reversals can occur. These effects may be observable for vortices in type-II superconductors as well as for colloids interacting with random substrates.

Elastically coupled two-dimensional Brownian motors

Many workers have theoretically and numerically studied Brownian motors (ratchet models) as models for molecular motors for many years. Their studies have been mainly concerned about one-dimensional motion of a particle or coupled particles experiencing spatially asymmetric interaction force. In this paper, we introduce a coupled flashing ratchet model, that is, elastically coupled Brownian particles with their own easily advancing directions under the on-and-off (or occasional) influence of two-dimensional interaction force asymmetric in the easily advancing direction of each particle. The dynamics of the model is investigated by computer simulation and characteristic motion of the particles in the two-dimensional space is observed. Our model is also studied as that for molecular motors in muscle contraction and the simulation results are compared with those of in vitro biological experiments in motility assays of the molecular motors. We succeed in reproducing the experimental results qualitatively with our model.

Nonlinear dynamics, rectification, and phase locking for particles on symmetrical two-dimensional periodic substrates with dc and circular ac drives

We investigate the dynamical motion of particles on a two-dimensional symmetric periodic substrate in the presence of both a dc drive along a symmetry direction of the periodic substrate and an additional circular ac drive. For large enough ac drives, the particle orbit encircles one or more potential maxima of the periodic substrate. In this case, when an additional increasing dc drive is applied in the longitudinal direction, the longitudinal velocity increases in a series of discrete steps that are integer multiples of a omega/(2 pi), where a is the lattice constant of the substrate. Fractional steps can also occur. These integer and fractional steps correspond to distinct stable dynamical orbits. A number of these phases also show a rectification in the positive or negative transverse direction where a nonzero transverse velocity occurs in the absence of a dc transverse drive. We map out the phase diagrams of the regions of rectification as a function of ac amplitude, and find a series of tongues. Most of the features, including the steps in the longitudinal velocity and the transverse rectification, can be captured with a simple toy model and by arguments from nonlinear maps. We have also investigated the effects of thermal disorder and incommensuration on the rectification phenomena, and find that for increasing disorder, the rectification regions are gradually smeared and the longitudinal velocity steps are no longer flat but show a linearly increasing velocity.
