Characterization of the order-disorder transition of a charged hard-sphere model

Structure of electric double layers in capacitive systems and to what extent (classical) density functional theory describes it

Ongoing scientific interest is aimed at the properties and structure of electric double layers (EDLs), which are crucial for capacitive energy storage, water treatment, and energy harvesting technologies like supercapacitors, desalination devices, blue engines, and thermocapacitive heat-to-current converters. A promising tool to describe their physics on a microscopic level is (classical) density functional theory (DFT), which can be applied in order to analyze pair correlations and charge ordering in the primitive model of charged hard spheres. This simple model captures the main properties of ionic liquids and solutions and it predicts many of the phenomena that occur in EDLs. The latter often lead to anomalous response in the differential capacitance of EDLs. This work constructively reviews the powerful theoretical framework of DFT and its recent developments regarding the description of EDLs. It explains to what extent current approaches in DFT describe structural ordering and in-plane transitions in EDLs, which occur when the corresponding electrodes are charged. Further, the review briefly summarizes the history of modeling EDLs, presents applications, and points out limitations and strengths in present theoretical approaches. It concludes that DFT as a sophisticated microscopic theory for ionic systems is expecting a challenging but promising future in both fundamental research and applications in supercapacitive technologies.

Complete phase behavior of the symmetrical colloidal electrolyte

We computed the complete phase diagram of the symmetrical colloidal electrolyte by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Thermodynamic integration, together with the Einstein-crystal method, and Gibbs-Duhem integration were used to calculate the equilibrium phase behavior. The system was modeled via the linear screening theory, where the electrostatic interactions are screened by the presence of salt in the medium, characterized by the inverse Debye length, kappa (in this work kappasigma=6). Our results show that at high temperature, the hard-sphere picture is recovered, i.e., the liquid crystallizes into a fcc crystal that does not exhibit charge ordering. In the low temperature region, the liquid freezes into a CsCl structure because charge correlations enhance the pairing between oppositely charged colloids, making the liquid-gas transition metastable with respect to crystallization. Upon increasing density, the CsCl solid transforms into a CuAu-like crystal and this one, in turn, transforms into a tetragonal ordered crystal near close packing. Finally, we have studied the ordered-disordered transitions finding three triple points where the phases in coexistence are liquid-CsCl-disordered fcc, CsCl-CuAu-disordered fcc, and CuAu-tetragonal-disordered fcc.

Gas-liquid phase separation in oppositely charged colloids: Stability and interfacial tension

We study the phase behavior and the interfacial tension of the screened Coulomb (Yukawa) restricted primitive model (YRPM) of oppositely charged hard spheres with diameter sigma using Monte Carlo simulations. We determine the gas-liquid and gas-solid phase transitions using free energy calculations and grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations for varying inverse Debye screening length kappa. We find that the gas-liquid phase separation is stable for kappasigma<or=4, and that the critical temperature decreases upon increasing the screening of the interaction (decreasing the range of the interaction). In addition, we determine the gas-liquid interfacial tension using grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The interfacial tension decreases upon increasing the range of the interaction. In particular, we find that simple scaling can be used to relate the interfacial tension of the YRPM to that of the restricted primitive model, where particles interact with bare Coulomb interactions.

Phase behavior of the lattice restricted primitive model with nearest neighbor exclusion

The global phase behavior of the lattice restricted primitive model with nearest neighbor exclusion has been studied by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The phase diagram is dominated by a fluid (or charge-disordered solid) to charge-ordered solid transition that terminates at the maximum density rho*(max)= sqrt 2 and reduced temperature T* approximately equal to 0.29. At that point, there is a first-order phase transition between two phases of the same density, one charge-ordered, and the other charge-disordered. The liquid-vapor transition for the model is metastable, lying entirely within the fluid-solid phase envelope.

CuAu structure in the restricted primitive model and oppositely charged colloids

We study the phase behavior of oppositely charged equal-size hard spheres both theoretically and experimentally, using Monte Carlo simulations and confocal microscopy. In the simulations, two systems are considered: the restricted primitive model (RPM) and a system of screened Coulomb particles. We construct the phase diagrams of both systems by computer simulations and predict a novel solid phase that has the CuAu structure. In addition, the CuAu structure is observed experimentally in a system of oppositely charged colloids. The qualitative agreement between the RPM, the screened Coulomb system, and the experiments shows that colloids form a suitable model system to study phase behavior in ionic systems.

Molecular dynamics simulations of the surface tension of ionic liquids

We report molecular dynamics computer simulations of the surface tension and interfacial thickness of ionic liquid-vapor interfaces modeled with a soft core primitive model potential. We find that the surface tension shows an anomalous oscillatory behavior with interfacial area. This observation is discussed in terms of finite size effects introduced by the periodic boundary conditions employed in computer simulations. Otherwise we show that the thickness of the liquid-vapor interface increases with surface area as predicted by the capillary wave theory. Data on the surface tension of size-asymmetric ionic liquids are reported and compared with experimental data of molten salts. Our data suggest that the surface tensions of size-asymmetric ionic liquids do not follow a corresponding states law.
