Mapping molecular conformation and orientation of polyimide surfaces for homeotropic liquid crystal alignment by nonlinear optical spectroscopy

Zinc Oleate Nanorod-Induced Vertical Alignment of Nematic Liquid Crystal

Nanocomposite zinc oxide nanorods capped with oleic acid (ZOR) with positive dielectric anisotropy liquid crystal (LC) 4'-octyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (8CB) filled in unaligned cells exhibit homeotropic alignment of host LC molecules. Further, systematic investigation of the textural, dielectric, and conductivity properties of nanocomposites filled in planar cells is performed with increasing concentration of nanorods. At a nanorod concentration ≤0.2 wt % in 8CB, the order parameter of nanocomposite samples is found to be increasing and ionic conductivity is found to be decreasing as compared to pure LC. Beyond 0.3 wt % concentration of nanorods in 8CB, vertical alignment (VA) of host LC is observed even in a planar aligned cell. The VA of LC molecules in ZOR nanocomposites is confirmed through attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared absorption spectra studies.

A functionally separated nanoimprinting material tailored for homeotropic liquid crystal alignment

In order to homeotropically align liquid crystals (LCs) at the nanosized surface grooves processed by nanoimprint lithography technology (NIL), we propose to design a hybrid-type homeotropic polymer material consisting of two distinct moieties with largely different thermo-mechanical properties and surface activity. Surface contact angle measurements and sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy allow us to conclude that the polymer film is a functionally separated composite suitable for the homeotropic LC alignment processed by NIL. As one of the potential applications using the hybrid-type homeotropic polymer, we demonstrate that the nanoimprinted grooves at the polymer surface can achieve a zenithal nematic LC bistability.

Rubbing-induced anisotropy of long alkyl side chains at polyimide surfaces

Molecular organization at polyimide surfaces used as alignment layers in liquid crystal displays was investigated using vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. We focus on the orientation of the long alkyl side groups at the polymer surface using polarization-selected SFG spectra of the CH(3)- and CH(2)-stretch modes of the side chain. Mechanical rubbing and baking, an accepted industrial procedure used to produce pretilt of the liquid crystal, was found to induce pronounced azimuthal anisotropy in the orientational distribution of the alkyl side chains. Orientational analysis of the SFG vibrational spectra in terms of the azimuthal and tilt angles (in and out of plane, respectively) of the alkyl side chains shows their preferential tilt along the rubbing direction, with the azimuthal distribution narrower for stronger rubbed polymer samples.

Effect of nanoconfinement on liquid-crystal polymer chains

We apply a Monte Carlo polymerization model for Gay-Berne [J. Chem. Phys. 74, 3316 (1981)] monomers that we have recently introduced [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 9123 (2004)] to investigate with computer simulations the effects of nanoconfinement and anchoring type on the structure of the main-chain liquid-crystal polymers formed in thin films, in the presence of several types of surface alignment: parallel to the interface (random and uniform) or perpendicular to it (homeotropic). We perform first a study of the confined monomers and then we examine the features of the polymer chains obtained from an isotropic or nematic sample. We find a significant effect of the anchoring conditions on the characteristics of the chains and particularly striking differences between planar and homeotropic boundaries. Furthermore, our results indicate that the choice of different anchorings could be used to tune the linearity and degree of polymerization of the chains.
