Nanosecond electrical explosion of thin aluminum wires in a vacuum: experimental and computational investigations

Particle acceleration in colliding flows: Binary star winds and other double-shock structures

A shock wave propagating perpendicularly to an ambient magnetic field accelerates particles considerably faster than in the parallel propagation regime. However, the perpendicular acceleration stops after the shock overruns a circular particle orbit. At the same time, it may continue in flows resulting from supersonically colliding plasmas bound by a pair of perpendicular shocks. Although the double-shock acceleration mechanism, which we consider in detail, is not advantageous for thermal particles, preenergized particles may avoid the premature end of acceleration. We argue that if their gyroradius exceeds the dominant turbulence scale between the shocks, these particles might traverse the intershock space repeatedly before being carried away by the shocked plasma. Moreover, entering the space between the shocks of similar velocities u_{1}≈u_{2}≈c, such particles start bouncing between the shocks at a fixed angle ≈35.3^{∘} to the shock surface. Their drift along the shock fronts is slow, V_{d}∼|u_{2}-u_{1}|≪c, so that it will take N∼Lc/|u_{2}-u_{1}|d≫1 bounces before they escape the accelerator (here, L is the size of the shocks and d is the gap between them). Since these particles more than tenfold their energy per cycle (two consecutive bounces), we invoke other possible losses that can limit the acceleration. They include drifts due to rippled shocks, the nonparallel mutual orientation of the upstream magnetic fields, and radiative losses.

Using of fiber-array diagnostic to measure the propagation of fast axial ionization wave during breakdown of electrically exploding tungsten wire in vacuum

The physical process of electrical explosion of wires in vacuum is featured with the surface discharge along the wire, which generates the corona plasma layer and terminates the Joule heating of the wire core. In this paper, a fiber-array probe was designed to directly measure the radiation of surface arc with spatial and temporal resolution. The radiation of the exploding wire was casted to the section of an optical-fiber-array by a lens and transmitted to PIN diodes and finally collected with an oscilloscope. This probe enables direct diagnostics of the evolution of surface discharge with high temporal resolution and certain spatial resolution. The radiation of a tungsten wire driven by a positive current pulse was measured, and results showed that surface discharge initiates near the cathode and propagates toward the anode with a speed of 7.7 ± 1.6 mm/ns; further estimations showed that this process is responsible for the "conical" structure of the exploding wire.

Exploding-wire experiments and theory for metal conductivity evaluation in the sub-eV regime

Copper and silver wires are subjected to pulsed high current densities producing high density metal plasma in the sub-eV regime with atmospheric air as a background gas. Numerical simulation via application of the one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic partial differential equations solved simultaneously with the constraining circuit equations is presented. The simulations require accurate knowledge of the material equation of state (EOS) and transport properties; the LANL sesame database is applied for the EOS in all cases. Two electrical conductivity models are applied. First, the Lee-More-Desjarlais (LMD) and its modification, the quantum LMD (QLMD) conductivity, which have been well proven at higher temperatures, are applied. Simulations with the LMD and QLMD data indicate that the conductivity data as well as the MHD methodology are accurate in the sub-eV regime of interest. A less computationally involved, empirical conductivity model is applied in the same regime to explore its temperature-density range of applicability compared to the more sophisticated model.

Diagnostics of underwater electrical wire explosion through a time- and space-resolved hard x-ray source

A time- and space-resolved hard x-ray source was developed as a diagnostic tool for imaging underwater exploding wires. A ~4 ns width pulse of hard x-rays with energies of up to 100 keV was obtained from the discharge in a vacuum diode consisting of point-shaped tungsten electrodes. To improve contrast and image quality, an external pulsed magnetic field produced by Helmholtz coils was used. High resolution x-ray images of an underwater exploding wire were obtained using a sensitive x-ray CCD detector, and were compared to optical fast framing images. Future developments and application of this diagnostic technique are discussed.

Transformation of a tungsten wire to the plasma state by nanosecond electrical explosion in vacuum

Experiment demonstrates the first direct transformation of a tungsten wire core to the plasma state by Joule heating during nanosecond electrical explosion in vacuum. Energy of approximately 130 eV/atom was deposited into the 12 microm W wire coated by 2 microm polyimide during the first approximately 10 ns. All the metal rapidly transformed to highly ionized plasma, while the surrounding polyimide coating remained primarily in a gaseous state. This coating totally suppressed corona formation. The expansion velocity of the wire was approximately 12-18 km/s, the average wire ionization at 50 ns reached approximately 67% with corresponding LTE temperature of approximately 1.2 eV . Explosion of bare W wire demonstrated earlier termination of the wire core heating due to shunting corona generation. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation reproduces the main features of coated and uncoated W wire explosion.

Thermodynamical calculation of metal heating in nanosecond exploding wire and foil experiments

A method of thermodynamical calculation of thin metal wire heating during its electrical explosion is discussed. The technique is based on a calculation of Joule energy deposition taking into account the current wave form and the temperature dependence of the resistivity and heat capacity of the metal. Comparing the calculation to a set of exploding tungsten wire experiments demonstrates good agreement up to the time of melting. Good agreement is also demonstrated with resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulation. A similar thermodynamical calculation for Mo, Ti, Ni, Fe, Al, and Cu shows good agreement with experimental data. The thermodynamical technique is useful for verification of the voltage measurements in exploding wire experiments. This technique also shows good agreement with an exploding W foil experiment.

Wire initiation critical for radiation symmetry in z-pinch-driven dynamic hohlraums

Axial symmetry in x-ray radiation of wire-array z pinches is important for the creation of dynamic hohlraums used to compress inertial-confinement-fusion capsules. We present the first evidence that this symmetry is directly correlated with the magnitude of the negative radial electric field along the wire surface. This field (in turn) is inferred to control the initial energy deposition into the wire cores, as well as any current shorting to the return conductor.
