Relationship between phase transitions and topological changes in one-dimensional models

Exact Topology of the Dynamic Probability Surface of an Activated Process by Persistent Homology

To gain insight into the reaction mechanism of activated processes, we introduce an exact approach for quantifying the topology of high-dimensional probability surfaces of the underlying dynamic processes. Instead of Morse indexes, we study the homology groups of a sequence of superlevel sets of the probability surface over high-dimensional configuration spaces using persistent homology. For alanine-dipeptide isomerization, a prototype of activated processes, we identify locations of probability peaks and connecting ridges, along with measures of their global prominence. Instead of a saddle point, the transition state ensemble (TSE) of conformations is at the most prominent probability peak after reactants/products, when proper reaction coordinates are included. Intuition-based models, even those exhibiting a double-well, fail to capture the dynamics of the activated process. Peak occurrence, prominence, and locations can be distorted upon subspace projection. While principal component analysis accounts for conformational variance, it inflates the complexity of the surface topology and destroys the dynamic properties of the topological features. In contrast, TSE emerges naturally as the most prominent peak beyond the reactant/product basins, when projected to a subspace of minimum dimension containing the reaction coordinates. Our approach is general and can be applied to investigate the topology of high-dimensional probability surfaces of other activated processes.

Anomalous structural transition of confined hard squares

Structural transitions are examined in quasi-one-dimensional systems of freely rotating hard squares, which are confined between two parallel walls. We find two competing phases: one is a fluid where the squares have two sides parallel to the walls, while the second one is a solidlike structure with a zigzag arrangement of the squares. Using transfer matrix method we show that the configuration space consists of subspaces of fluidlike and solidlike phases, which are connected with low probability microstates of mixed structures. The existence of these connecting states makes the thermodynamic quantities continuous and precludes the possibility of a true phase transition. However, thermodynamic functions indicate strong tendency for the phase transition and our replica exchange Monte Carlo simulation study detects several important markers of the first order phase transition. The distinction of a phase transition from a structural change is practically impossible with simulations and experiments in such systems like the confined hard squares.

Energy landscape of the finite-size spherical three-spin glass model

We study the three-spin spherical model with mean-field interactions and Gaussian random couplings. For moderate system sizes of up to 20 spins, we obtain all stationary points of the energy landscape by means of the numerical polynomial homotopy continuation method. On the basis of these stationary points, we analyze the complexity and other quantities related to the glass transition of the model and compare these finite-system quantities to their exact counterparts in the thermodynamic limit.

Energy-landscape analysis of the two-dimensional nearest-neighbor φ⁴ model

The stationary points of the potential energy function of the φ⁴ model on a two-dimensional square lattice with nearest-neighbor interactions are studied by means of two numerical methods: a numerical homotopy continuation method and a globally convergent Newton-Raphson method. We analyze the properties of the stationary points, in particular with respect to a number of quantities that have been conjectured to display signatures of the thermodynamic phase transition of the model. Although no such signatures are found for the nearest-neighbor φ⁴ model, our study illustrates the strengths and weaknesses of the numerical methods employed.

Role of saddles in topologically driven phase transitions: the case of the d -dimensional spherical model

Analyzing the d -dimensional spherical model, we show that underlying saddles, defined through a map in the configuration space, play a central role in driving the phase transition. At the phase transition point the underlying saddle energy reaches its lowest value, corresponding to the trivial boundary topological singularity.

Phase transitions and topology in 2+k XY mean-field models

The thermodynamics and topology of mean-field models with 2+k body interaction terms (generalizing XY model) are derived. Focusing on two particular cases (2+4 and 2+6 body interaction terms), a comparison between thermodynamic (phase transition energy, thermodynamically forbidden energy regions) and topological (singularity and curvature of saddle entropy) properties is performed. We find that (i) a topological change is present at the phase transition energy; however, (ii) only one topological change occurs, also for those models exhibiting two phase transitions; (iii) the order of a phase transition is not completely signaled by the curvature of topological quantities.

The mean-field model Phi4: entropy, analyticity, and configuration space topology

A large deviation technique is applied to the mean-field model Phi4, providing an exact expression for the configurational entropy s(v,m) as a function of the potential energy v and the magnetization m. Although a continuous phase transition occurs at some critical energy vc, the entropy is found to be a real analytic function in both arguments, and it is only the maximization over m which gives rise to a nonanalyticity in s(v)=supm s(v,m). This mechanism of nonanalyticity-generation by maximization over one variable of a real analytic entropy function is restricted to systems with long-range interactions and has--for continuous phase transitions--the generic occurrence of classical critical exponents as an immediate consequence. Furthermore, this mechanism can provide an explanation why, contradictory to the so-called topological hypothesis, the phase transition in the mean-field model need not be accompanied by a topology change in the family of constant-energy submanifolds.
