Sound-field modeling in architectural acoustics by a transport theory: application to street canyons

A Hybrid Model for Investigating the Effect of Scattering from Building Façade on Sound Propagation in Street Canyons

Street canyons are basic components of modern cities. Sound propagation in streets has been proven to be significantly affected by reflections from building façades. In this paper, an iterative model combining acoustic radiosity and the image source method (IMCRI) is proposed to investigate the effect of diffuse reflections on sound propagation in urban street canyons. By applying image patches, this model calculates both specular reflected components and diffuse reflected components in every reflection. The accuracy of this model is then validated with full-scale measured data from five actual streets with different scattering conditions. Good agreements of sound pressure level and reverberation time are found between the IMCRI and the measurements. The performance of the IMCRI is found to be superior to those of the existing energy models, especially for the reverberation time simulation.

A numerical hybrid model for outdoor sound propagation in complex urban environments

Noise mapping in large and dense urban areas is computationally challenging, if not impossible, with the use of conventional numerical techniques. Recently, promising results have shown the potential of energy-based models to compete with conventional numerical techniques. In this paper, a hybrid full-wave/diffusion propagation model is proposed to address some of the flaws of the traditional diffusion model. The full-wave model is used for predicting sound propagation (i) near the source, where interactions between waves are important, and (ii) outside the cluttered environment, where free-field-like conditions apply. The diffusion model is used in regions where diffusion conditions are met.

Ray-trace modeling of acoustic Green's function based on the semiclassical (eikonal) approximation

The Green's function (GF) for the scalar wave equation is numerically constructed by an advanced geometric ray-tracing method based on the eikonal approximation related to the semiclassical propagator. The underlying theory is first briefly introduced, and then it is applied to acoustics and implemented in a ray-tracing-type numerical simulation. The so constructed numerical method is systematically used to calculate the sound field in a rectangular (cuboid) room, yielding also the acoustic modes of the room. The simulated GF is rigorously compared to its analytic approximation. Good agreement is found, which proves the devised numerical approach potentially useful also for low frequency acoustic modeling, which is in practice not covered by geometrical methods.

Energy-based method for near-real time modeling of sound field in complex urban environments

Prediction of the sound field in large urban environments has been limited thus far by the heavy computational requirements of conventional numerical methods such as boundary element (BE) or finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods. Recently, a considerable amount of work has been devoted to developing energy-based methods for this application, and results have shown the potential to compete with conventional methods. However, these developments have been limited to two-dimensional (2-D) studies (along street axes), and no real description of the phenomena at issue has been exposed. Here the mathematical theory of diffusion is used to predict the sound field in 3-D complex urban environments. A 3-D diffusion equation is implemented by means of a simple finite-difference scheme and applied to two different types of urban configurations. This modeling approach is validated against FDTD and geometrical acoustic (GA) solutions, showing a good overall agreement. The role played by diffraction near buildings edges close to the source is discussed, and suggestions are made on the possibility to predict accurately the sound field in complex urban environments, in near real time simulations.

A numerical investigation of the Fick's law of diffusion in room acoustics

In this paper the validity of the Fick's law of diffusion in room acoustics is investigated in the stationary state. The Fick's law, underlying the room-acoustics diffusion model, assumes a proportionality relationship between the local sound intensity and the energy density gradient, the proportionality constant being the so-called diffusion coefficient. This relationship, based on an analogy with the behavior of real particles in a scattering medium, is assessed by using a numerical tool simulating the actual dynamics of sound particles in a room. Two types of room geometries are considered: rooms with proportionate dimensions and long rooms. Concerning proportionate rooms the numerical analysis highlights the presence of weak variations of the reverberant energy density, generating an intensity vector pattern which is shown to be correctly described by the theoretical Fick's law and homogeneous diffusion. Conversely, inside long rooms, an estimate of the local value of the diffusion coefficient is carried out, showing that the reverberant sound field is well described by a spatially varying diffusion coefficient (non-homogeneous diffusion). The rate of increase of the estimated diffusion coefficient depends on the cross-sectional area of the room and on the boundaries absorption coefficient.

A coupled modal-finite element method for the wave propagation modeling in irregular open waveguides

In modeling the wave propagation within a street canyon, particular attention must be paid to the description of both the multiple reflections of the wave on the building facades and the radiation in the free space above the street. The street canyon being considered as an open waveguide with a discontinuously varying cross-section, a coupled modal-finite element formulation is proposed to solve the three-dimensional wave equation within. The originally open configuration-the street canyon open in the sky above-is artificially turned into a close waveguiding structure by using perfectly matched layers that truncate the infinite sky without introducing numerical reflection. Then the eigenmodes of the resulting waveguide are determined by a finite element method computation in the cross-section. The eigensolutions can finally be used in a multimodal formulation of the wave propagation along the canyon, given its geometry and the end conditions at its extremities: initial field condition at the entrance and radiation condition at the output.

One-dimensional transport equation models for sound energy propagation in long spaces: theory

In this paper, a three-dimensional transport equation model is developed to describe the sound energy propagation in a long space. Then this model is reduced to a one-dimensional model by approximating the solution using the method of weighted residuals. The one-dimensional transport equation model directly describes the sound energy propagation in the "long" dimension and deals with the sound energy in the "short" dimensions by prescribed functions. Also, the one-dimensional model consists of a coupled set of N transport equations. Only N=1 and N=2 are discussed in this paper. For larger N, although the accuracy could be improved, the calculation time is expected to significantly increase, which diminishes the advantage of the model in terms of its computational efficiency.

One-dimensional transport equation models for sound energy propagation in long spaces: simulations and experiments

In this paper, the accuracy and efficiency of the previously discussed one-dimensional transport equation models [Y. Jing et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 127, 2312-2322 (2010)] are examined both numerically and experimentally. The finite element method is employed to solve the equations. Artificial diffusion is applied in the numerical implementation to suppress oscillations of the solution. The transport equation models are then compared with the ray-tracing based method for different scenarios. In general, they are in good agreement, and the transport equation models are substantially less time consuming. In addition, the two-group model is found to yield more accurate results than the one-group model for the tested cases. Lastly, acoustic experimental results obtained from a 1:10 long room scale-model are used to verify the transport equation models. The results suggest that the transport equation models are able to accurately model the sound field in a long space.
