Heterogeneity-related dynamics in isotropic n-pentylcyanobiphenyl

Are Critical Fluctuations Responsible for Glass Formation?

The dynamic heterogeneities occurring just before the transition to the glassy phase have been named as the cause of amorphization in supercooled systems. Numerous studies conducted so far have confirmed this hypothesis, and based on it, a widely accepted solution to the puzzle of glass transition has been developed. This report focuses on verifying the existence of a strong pretransitional anomaly near the glass transition Tg. For this purpose, supercooled liquid-crystalline systems with a strong rod-like structure were selected. Based on the obtained experimental data, we demonstrate in this article that the previously postulated dynamic heterogeneities exhibit a critical characteristic, meaning a strong pretransitional anomaly can be observed with the described critical exponent α=0.5. Due to this property, it can be concluded that these heterogeneities are critical fluctuations, and consequently, the transition to the glassy state can be described based on the theory of critical phenomena. To measure the pretransitional anomaly near Tg in supercooled liquid-crystalline systems, broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and nonlinear dielectric effect (NDE) methods were applied. The exponent α provides insight into the nature and intensity of critical fluctuations in the system. A value of α=0.5 suggests that the fluctuations become increasingly intense as the system approaches the critical point, contributing to the divergence in specific heat. Understanding the role of critical fluctuations in the glass transition is crucial for innovating and improving a wide range of materials for energy storage, materials design, biomedical applications, food preservation, and environmental sustainability. These advancements can lead to materials with superior properties, optimized manufacturing processes, and applications that meet the demands of modern technology and sustainability challenges.

Influence of Liquid Crystallinity and Mechanical Deformation on the Molecular Relaxations of an Auxetic Liquid Crystal Elastomer

Liquid Crystal Elastomers (LCEs) combine the anisotropic ordering of liquid crystals with the elastic properties of elastomers, providing unique physical properties, such as stimuli responsiveness and a recently discovered molecular auxetic response. Here, we determine how the molecular relaxation dynamics in an acrylate LCE are affected by its phase using broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, calorimetry and rheology. Our LCE is an excellent model system since it exhibits a molecular auxetic response in its nematic state, and chemically identical nematic or isotropic samples can be prepared by cross-linking. We find that the glass transition temperatures (Tg) and dynamic fragilities are similar in both phases, and the T-dependence of the α relaxation shows a crossover at the same T* for both phases. However, for T>T*, the behavior becomes Arrhenius for the nematic LCE, but only more Arrhenius-like for the isotropic sample. We provide evidence that the latter behavior is related to the existence of pre-transitional nematic fluctuations in the isotropic LCE, which are locked in by polymerization. The role of applied strain on the relaxation dynamics and mechanical response of the LCE is investigated; this is particularly important since the molecular auxetic response is linked to a mechanical Fréedericksz transition that is not fully understood. We demonstrate that the complex Young's modulus and the α relaxation time remain relatively unchanged for small deformations, whereas for strains for which the auxetic response is achieved, significant increases are observed. We suggest that the observed molecular auxetic response is coupled to the strain-induced out-of-plane rotation of the mesogen units, in turn driven by the increasing constraints on polymer configurations, as reflected in increasing elastic moduli and α relaxation times; this is consistent with our recent results showing that the auxetic response coincides with the emergence of biaxial order.

Long-Range Static and Dynamic Previtreous Effects in Supercooled Squalene-Impact of Strong Electric Field

This article presents evidence for the long-range previtreous changes of two static properties: the dielectric constant (ε) and its strong electric field related counterpart, the nonlinear dielectric effect (NDE). Important evidence is provided for the functional characterizations of ε(T) temperature changes by the ‘Mossotti Catastrophe’ formula, as well as for the NDE vs. T evolution by the relations resembling those developed for critical liquids. The analysis of the dynamic properties, based on the activation energy index, excluded the Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann (VFT) relation as a validated tool for portraying the evolution of the primary relaxation time. This result questions the commonly applied ‘Stickel operator’ routine as the most reliable tool for determining the dynamic crossover temperature. In particular, the strong electric field radically affects the distribution of the relaxation times, the form of the evolution of the primary relaxation time, and the fragility. The results obtained in this paper support the concept of a possible semi-continuous phase transition hidden below T_g. The studies were carried out in supercooled squalene, a material with an extremely low electric conductivity, a strongly elongated molecule, and which is vitally important for biology and medicine related issues.

‘Quasi-Tricritical’ and Glassy Dielectric Properties of a Nematic Liquid Crystalline Material

Results of dielectric studies in the nematic and isotropic liquid phases of pentylcyanobiphenyl (5CB), a model rod-like liquid crystalline material, are shown. They are based on the discussion of the evolution of dielectric constant ( ε ), its changes under the strong electric field (nonlinear dielectric effect, NDE), and finally, the primary relaxation time. It is shown that changes in ε T and NDE are entirely dominated by the impact of pretransitional fluctuations (pre-nematic and pre-isotropic, respectively) which are associated with the weakly discontinuous character of the isotropic–nematic phase transition. This influence also extends for the low-frequency, ionic species dominated, region. Notable, that the derivative-based and distortions sensitive analysis revealed the tricritical nature of the I-N transition. Although the glass transition in 5CB occurs in the deeply supercooled state at T g ≈ − 68 ° C , the dynamics (changes of the primary relaxation time) follow a previtreous pattern both in the isotropic and in the nematic phase. Finally, the discussion of the ’molecular’ vs. ‘quasi-critical’ characterizations of the isotropic and nematic phases is presented. It shows the evident prevalence of the ‘quasi-critical-picture’, which offers the consistent temperature parameterization in the total tested temperature range.

Nanoparticle-controlled glassy dynamics in nematogen-based nanocolloids

Results of broad-band dielectric spectroscopy studies in liquid crystal (pentylcyanobiphenyl, 5CB)-based nanocolloids are presented. They reveal the strong impact of BaTiO_{3} nanoparticles on dynamics and uniaxial ordering. Studies were carried out in an extreme range of temperatures (∼150 K), including the supercooled nematic phase. For the latter, the unique "pretransitional" effect for dielectric constant on approaching solid state is reported. The distortion-sensitive analysis revealed super-Arrhenius dynamics but associated with critical-like behavior. In the isotropic phase, translational-orientational decoupling, unusual for the high temperature dynamic domain, was detected. It can be directly link to heterogeneities-prenematic fluctuations. The model linking the classical Landau-de Gennes approach with Imry-Ma arguments has been developed to discuss experimental results.

Universal behavior of the apparent fragility in ultraslow glass forming systems

Despite decades of studies on the grand problem of the glass transition the question of well-defined universal patterns, including the key problem of the previtreous behavior of the primary (structural) relaxation time, remains elusive. This report shows the universal previtreous behavior of the apparent fragility, i.e. the steepness index mP (T > Tg) = d log10τ(T)/d( Tg/T). It is evidenced that mP(T) = 1(T - T*), for T → Tg and  T*= Tg - Δ T*. Basing on this finding, the new 3-parameter dependence for portraying the previtreous behavior of the primary relaxation time has been derived: τ(T) = CΩ((T - T*)/T)-Ω × [exp((T - T*)/T)]Ω. The universality of obtained relations is evidenced for glass formers belonging to low molecular weight liquids, polymers (melt and solid), plastic crystals, liquid crystals, resins and relaxors. They exhibit clear preferences either for the VFT or for the critical-like descriptions, if recalled already used modeling. The novel relation can obey even above the dynamic crossover temperature, with the power exponent Ω ranging between ~17 (liquid crystals) to ~57 (glycerol), what may indicate the impact of symmetry on the previtreous effect. Finally, the emerging similarity to the behavior in the isotropic phase of nematic liquid crystals is recalled.

Glassy dynamics in the isotropic phase of a smectogenic liquid crystalline compound

The temperature evolution of the primary relaxation time in the isotropic phase of 4-cyano-4'-tetradecylbiphenyl (14CB) above the isotropic-smectic A (I-SmA) transition is discussed. Based on the enthalpy space and distortion-sensitive analysis, the prevalence of the mode coupling theory (MCT) "critical" and "glassy" dynamics is shown. The obtained singular dependence is related to the MCT critical temperature located approximately 48 K below the clearing (I-SmA) temperature. However, a weak but detectable distortion in the immediate vicinity of the transition occurs. It is also shown that the value of the fragile strength coefficient D(T) is characteristic of a very fragile glassy liquid whereas the steepness index m is typical of a strong one. Both magnitudes anomalously change on approaching the I-SmA phase transition. The static permittivity shows the pretransitional effect linked to the temperature of the hypothetical continuous phase transition located approximately 10.2 K below the I-SmA transition.

Scaling the dynamics of orientationally disordered mixed crystals

The evolution of the primary relaxation time of orientationally disordered (OD) mixed crystals [(CH(3))(2)C(CH(2)OH)(2)](1-X)[(CH(3))C(CH(2)OH)(3)](X), with 0 < X < or = 0.5, on approaching the glass temperature (T(g)) is discussed. The application of the distortion-sensitive, derivative-based procedure revealed a limited adequacy of the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann parametrization and a superiority of the critical-like description tau proportional to (T - T(C))(-phi(') ), phi(') = 9-11.5, and T(C) approximately T(g) - 10 K. Basing on these results as well as that of Drozd-Rzoska et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 129, 184509 (2008)] the question arises whether such behavior may be suggested as the optimal universal pattern for dynamics in vitrifying OD crystals (plastic crystals). The obtained behavior is in fair agreement with the dynamic scaling model (DSM) [R. H. Colby, Phys. Rev. E 61, 1783 (2000)], originally proposed for vitrifying molecular liquids and polymers. The application of DSM made it possible to estimate the size of the cooperatively rearranging regions ("heterogeneities") in OD phases near T(g).

Universal pattern for the distribution of relaxation times in the isotropic phase of liquid crystalline n-cyanobiphenyls

A universal pattern emerging from the analysis of the distribution of relaxation times in the isotropic phase of liquid crystalline n-alkylcyanobiphenyls (nCB) from 4CB to 14CB is presented. The increase of the length of nCB molecules causes the high-frequency (short-time) branch of the primary relaxation loss curve to approach the form epsilon(f>fpeak) approximately omega(-n), with n-->1/2 in frequency (omega=2pif) or approximately sqrt[t] in time on cooling toward the isotropic-mesophase "clearing" phase-transition temperature (TC). Recently, such behavior was suggested as a hypothetical universal pattern for diverse glass forming organic liquids on approaching the glass temperature [A. I. Nielsen, T. Christensen, B. Jakobsen, K. Niss, N. B. Olsen, R. Richert, and J. C. Dyre, J. Chem. Phys. 130, 154508 (2009)]. The isotropic phase of rodlike liquid crystalline compounds is considered to be an important experimental model system for studying glassy dynamics since it constitutes a link with the model fluid of hard ellipsoids of revolution.

Universal critical-like scaling of dynamic properties in symmetry-selected glass formers

Evidence for a possible general validity of the critical-like behavior of dielectric relaxation time or viscosity tau,eta proportional to (T-T(C))(-phi) with phi-->9 and T(C)<T(g) on approaching glass temperature (T(g)) is shown. This universal behavior is found in various systems where the vitrification is dominated by a selected element of symmetry. The supporting evidence was obtained on the basis of the distortion-sensitive, derivative-based analysis of tau(T) data for a rodlike liquid crystalline compound (E7), orientationally disordered crystals (plastic crystals), a colloidal nanofluid system, polymer melt (polystyrene), oligomeric liquid (EPON 828), and low molecular weight glass formers (glycerol, threitol, sorbitol, and 1-propanol). Results presented explain the puzzling experimental artifacts supporting the dynamical scaling model [R. H. Colby, Phys. Rev. E 61, 1783 (2000); B. M. Erwin, R. H. Colby, J. Non-Cryst. Solids 307-310, 225 (2002)]. It is suggested that spin-glass-like systems may be linked to the discussed pattern.

Anomalous temperature behavior of nonlinear dielectric effect in supercooled nitrobenzene

Studies of the nonlinear dielectric effect (NDE), describing changes of the dielectric permittivity induced by a strong electric field, in normal and supercooled liquid nitrobenzene are presented. An unusual increase of the stationary NDE, portrayed by the critical-like relation approximately (T-T+)(-1), was obtained. Nitrobenzene samples solidified at TS approximately T+ +2 K , approximately 10 K below the reported melting temperature Tm approximately 278 K . The anomalous increase of the NDE coincided with a slow relaxation process, detected in time-resolved measurements. The results presented offer a reinterpretation of the classical description by Piekara and Piekara [A. Piekara and B. Piekara, C. R. Hebd. Seances Acad. Sci. 203, 852 (1936)] of a positive sign contribution to the NDE in liquids. It is suggested that the obtained anomaly may be associated with the appearance of local quasinematic structures. This is supported by a speculative link to a general model for liquid-liquid transitions [H. Tanaka, Phys. Rev. E 62, 6968 (2000)] and a phenomenological model originally developed for the self-focusing of laser beams [J. Hanus, Phys. Rev. 178, 420 (1969)]. The case of the isotropic-nematic transition in liquid crystalline materials is also recalled. The NDE results reported here are related neither to the glass transition phenomenon nor to the recently developed concept of a second liquid-liquid transition.

Anomalous Diffusion and Cage Effects in the Isotropic Phase of a Liquid Crystal

The translational motion of 4-n-hexyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (6CB) in its isotropic phase has been studied by atomistic molecular dynamics simulation from 280 to 330 K. The mean square displacement shows evidence of a subdiffusive dynamics, with a plateau that becomes very apparent at the lowest temperatures. A three-time self-intermediate scattering function reveals that this plateau is connected with a homogeneous dynamics that, at longer times, becomes heterogeneous and finally exponential. These features are shared by, for example, a high-density system of hard spheres, which supports the universal character of the translational dynamics of liquids in their supercooled condition. As predicted by the idealized version of the mode-coupling theory (MCT), the diffusion coefficient dependence upon temperature is well described by a power law, with a critical temperature very close to that obtained by experimental measurements on orientational relaxation. This agreement might indicate a complete freezing of both rotational and translational intradomain dynamics. The time-temperature superposition principle also holds. The shape of the cage that surrounds a 6CB molecule has been reconstructed, and this analysis suggests a preferential side-by-side arrangement of molecules, which locally tend to align their long axes even in the isotropic phase.
