Frequency versus relaxation oscillations in a semiconductor laser with coherent filtered optical feedback

Detuning effects in Brillouin ring microresonator laser

Brillouin lasers, with their unique properties, offer an intriguing solution for many applications, yet bringing their performance to integrated platforms has remained questionable. We present a theoretical framework to describe Brillouin lasing in integrated ring microcavities. Specifically, a general case of a mismatch between the Brillouin shift and the microresonator inter-mode spacing is considered. We show that although the lasing threshold is increased with the frequency detuning, a significant enhancement of the laser power in comparison with the pure resonant interaction could be achieved. Moreover, there is an optimal pump frequency detuning from the resonant mode frequency, when the effect is most pronounced. An increase of the Brillouin threshold with the pump frequency detuning is accompanied by narrowing the pump frequency range available for lasing. Importantly, at the optimal value of the pump frequency detuning when the Brillouin signal is maximal, Brillouin signal noise level is minimal. Analytical results obtained in the steady-state approach are in quantitative agreement with the results of numerical simulations.

Stability near threshold in a semiconductor laser subject to optical feedback: a bifurcation analysis of the Lang-Kobayashi equations

Through the use of analytical and numerical techniques, we investigate the interaction between the trivial off-state and the continuous-wave (CW) operation of a semiconductor laser subject to conventional optical feedback. More specifically, using numerical continuation tools, the stability and bifurcations of the CW states, or external-cavity modes (ECMs), are analyzed in dependence on the parameters of feedback phase, feedback strength, pump current, and the linewidth enhancement factor. In this way, curves of codimension-one Hopf bifurcations are shown to destabilize the off-state and lead to stable ECM operation. Moreover, self-intersections of these Hopf curves in codimension-two Hopf-Hopf bifurcation points are seen to give rise to curves of codimension-one torus bifurcations (Hopf bifurcations of the ECMs), and degenerate-Hopf points to the birth of saddle-node bifurcations of the ECMs, as parameters are varied. These codimension-two points are shown to come together at a codimension-three degenerate Hopf-Hopf point (a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of the ECMs): a limiting point for which a stable off-state can exist.

Stabilizing continuous-wave output in semiconductor lasers by time-delayed feedback

The stabilization of steady states is studied in a modified Lang-Kobayashi model of a semiconductor laser. We show that multiple time-delayed feedback, realized by a Fabry-Perot resonator coupled to the laser, provides a valuable tool for the suppression of unwanted intensity pulsations, and leads to stable continuous-wave operation. The domains of control are calculated in dependence on the feedback strength, delay time (cavity round trip time), memory parameter (mirror reflectivity), latency time, feedback phase, and bandpass filtering. Due to the optical feedback, multistable behavior can also occur in the form of delay-induced intensity pulsations or other modes for certain choices of the control parameters. Control may then still be achieved by slowly ramping the injection current during turn-on.

Suppressing noise-induced intensity pulsations in semiconductor lasers by means of time-delayed feedback

We investigate the possibility to suppress noise-induced intensity pulsations (relaxation oscillations) in semiconductor lasers by means of a time-delayed feedback control scheme. This idea is first studied in a generic normal-form model, where we derive an analytic expression for the mean amplitude of the oscillations and demonstrate that it can be strongly modulated by varying the delay time. We then investigate the control scheme analytically and numerically in a laser model of Lang-Kobayashi type and show that relaxation oscillations excited by noise can be very efficiently suppressed via feedback from a Fabry-Perot resonator.

Control of unstable steady states by extended time-delayed feedback

Time-delayed feedback methods can be used to control unstable periodic orbits as well as unstable steady states. We present an application of extended time delay autosynchronization introduced by Socolar [Phys. Rev. E 50, 3245 (1994)] to an unstable focus. This system represents a generic model of an unstable steady state which can be found, for instance, in Hopf bifurcation. In addition to the original controller design, we investigate effects of control loop latency and a bandpass filter on the domain of control. Furthermore, we consider coupling of the control force to the system via a rotational coupling matrix parametrized by a variable phase. We present an analysis of the domain of control and support our results by numerical calculations.

Feedback phase sensitivity of a semiconductor laser subject to filtered optical feedback: experiment and theory

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the dynamics of a semiconductor laser subject to filtered optical feedback. Depending on the feedback strength we find dynamical regimes with different dependence on the feedback phase. In particular, the influence of the feedback phase on cw emission and on frequency oscillations is characterized experimentally. We also measure the dependence of the filter mirror distance on the frequency oscillations. In general, good agreement between experiment and theory is found.

All-optical noninvasive control of unstable steady states in a semiconductor laser

All-optical noninvasive control of a multisection semiconductor laser by means of time-delayed feedback from an external Fabry-Perot cavity is realized experimentally. A theoretical analysis, in both a generic model as well as a device-specific simulation, points out the role of the optical phase. Using phase-dependent feedback we demonstrate stabilization of the continuous-wave laser output and noninvasive suppression of intensity pulsations.
