Anomalous diffusion in periodic potentials under self-similar colored noise

In biased and soft-walled channels: Insights into transport phenomena and damped modulation

The motion of a particle along a channel of finite width is known to be affected by either the presence of energy barriers or changes in the bias forces along the channel direction. By using the lateral equilibrium hypothesis, we have successfully derived the effective diffusion coefficient for soft-walled channels, and the diffusion is found to be influenced by the curvature profile of the potential. A typical phenomenon of diffusion enhancement is observed under the appropriate parameter conditions. We first discovered an anomalous phenomenon of quasi-periodic enhancement of oscillations, which cannot be captured by the one-dimensional effective potential, under the combination of sub-Ohmic damping with two-dimensional restricted channels. We innovatively develop the effective potential and the formation mechanism of velocity variance under super-Ohmic and ballistic damping, and meanwhile, ergodicity is of concern. The theoretical framework of a ballistic system can be reinterpreted through the folding acceleration theory. This comprehensive analysis significantly enhances our understanding of diffusion processes in constrained geometries.

Persistent nonequilibrium effects in generalized Langevin dynamics of nonrelativistic and relativistic particles

Persistent nonequilibrium effects such as the memory of the initial state, the ballistic diffusion, and the break of the equipartition theorem and the ergodicity in Brownian motions are investigated by analytically solving the generalized Langevin equation of nonrelativistic Brownian particles with colored noise. These effects can also be observed in the Brownian motion of relativistic particles by numerically solving the generalized Langevin equation for specially chosen memory kernels. Our analyses give rise to think about the possible anomalous motion of heavy quarks in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Transition of multidiffusive states in a biased periodic potential

We study a frequency-dependent damping model of hyperdiffusion within the generalized Langevin equation. The model allows for the colored noise defined by its spectral density, assumed to be proportional to ω^{δ-1} at low frequencies with 0<δ<1 (sub-Ohmic damping) or 1<δ<2 (super-Ohmic damping), where the frequency-dependent damping is deduced from the noise by means of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. It is shown that for super-Ohmic damping and certain parameters, the diffusive process of the particle in a titled periodic potential undergos sequentially four time regimes: thermalization, hyperdiffusion, collapse, and asymptotical restoration. For analyzing transition phenomenon of multidiffusive states, we demonstrate that the first exist time of the particle escaping from the locked state into the running state abides by an exponential distribution. The concept of an equivalent velocity trap is introduced in the present model; moreover, reformation of ballistic diffusive system is also considered as a marginal situation but does not exhibit the collapsed state of diffusion.

Fractional diffusion in a periodic potential: Overdamped and inertia corrected solutions for the spectrum of the velocity correlation function

Anomalous diffusion of a particle in a cosine periodic potential is treated using fractional diffusion equations in both phase and configuration space. Exact solutions of two distinct forms of the fractional Klein-Kramers (Fokker-Planck) equation for the distribution function in phase space are obtained via matrix continued fractions yielding the average velocity, the velocity autocorrelation function, its spectrum, etc. In the overdamped limit, the results yielded by both equations agree with those from a fractional probability density diffusion equation in configuration space. A simple analytic solution for the spectrum of the velocity correlation function is also given using the effective eigenvalue approximation. The results represent generalizations of the conventional solutions for the normal diffusion of a Brownian particle in a cosine potential to fractional dynamics (giving rise to anomalous diffusion).

Localized and delocalized motion of colloidal particles on a magnetic bubble lattice

We study the motion of paramagnetic colloidal particles placed above magnetic bubble domains of a uniaxial garnet film and driven through the lattice by external magnetic field modulation. An external tunable precessing field propels the particles either in localized orbits around the bubbles or in superdiffusive or ballistic motion through the bubble array. This motion results from the interplay between the driving rotating signal, the viscous drag force and the periodic magnetic energy landscape. We explain the transition in terms of the incommensurability between the transit frequency of the particle through a unit cell and the modulation frequency. Ballistic motion dynamically breaks the symmetry of the array and the phase locked particles follow one of the six crystal directions.
