Abstract
We study a discrete model of an heterogeneous elastic line with internal disorder, submitted to thermal fluctuations. The monomers are connected through random springs with independent and identically distributed elastic constants drawn from p(k)∼k^{μ-1} for k→0. When μ>1, the scaling of the standard Edwards-Wilkinson model is recovered. When μ<1, the elastic line exhibits an anomalous scaling of the type observed in many growth models and experiments. Here we derive and use the exact probability distribution of the line shape at equilibrium, as well as the spectral properties of the matrix containing the random couplings, to fully characterize the sample to sample fluctuations. Our results lead to scaling predictions that partially disagree with previous works, but that are corroborated by numerical simulations. We also provide an interpretation of the anomalous scaling in terms of the abrupt jumps in the line's shape that dominate the average value of the observable.

Abstract
We study the effects of ambient air humidity on the dynamics of imbibition in a paper. We observed that a quick increase of ambient air humidity leads to depinning and non-Washburn motion of wetting fronts. Specifically, we found that after depinning the wetting front moves with decreasing velocity v[proportionality](h(p)/h(D))(γ), where h(D) is the front elevation with respect to its pinned position at lower humidity h(p), while γ=/~1/3. The spatiotemporal maps of depinned front activity are established. The front motion is controlled by the dynamics of local avalanches directed at 30° to the balk flow direction. Although the roughness of the pinned wetting front is self-affine and the avalanche size distribution displays a power-law asymptotic, the roughness of the moving front becomes multiaffine a few minutes after depinning.

Abstract
We derive a new, effective macroscopic Cahn–Hilliard equation whose homogeneous free energy is represented by fourth-order polynomials, which form the frequently applied double-well potential. This upscaling is done for perforated/strongly heterogeneous domains. To the best knowledge of the authors, this seems to be the first attempt of upscaling the Cahn–Hilliard equation in such domains. The new homogenized equation should have a broad range of applicability owing to the well-known versatility of phase-field models. The additionally introduced feature of systematically and reliably accounting for confined geometries by homogenization allows for new modelling and numerical perspectives in both science and engineering. Our results are applied to wetting dynamics in porous media and to a single channel with strongly heterogeneous walls.

Abstract
We study the effect of weak vibrations on the imbibition of water in granular media. In our experiments, we have observed that as soon as the vibration is applied, an initially pinned wetting front advances in the direction of imbibition. We found that the front motion is governed by the avalanches of localized intermittent advances directed at 45° to the imbibition direction. When the rescaled gravitational acceleration of vertical vibrations is in the range of 0.81≤G≤0.95, we observed an almost steady motion of wetting front with a constant velocity v(cr)(G)∝exp(-1/G) during more than 20 min, whereas at lower accelerations (0.5≤G≤0.8) the front velocity decreases in time as v∝t(-δ). We suggest that the steady motion of an imbibition front in a weakly vibrated granular medium can be treated as a creep motion associated with nonthermal temporal fluctuations of packing density in a weakly vibrated granular medium.

Abstract
We present a theoretical study of spontaneous imbibition of liquid (4)He in silica aerogels focusing on the effect of porosity on the fluid dynamical behavior. We adopt a coarse-grained three-dimensional lattice-gas description like in previous studies of gas adsorption and capillary condensation and use a dynamical mean-field theory, assuming that capillary disorder predominates over permeability disorder as in recent phase-field models of spontaneous imbibition. Our results reveal a remarkable connection between imbibition and adsorption as also suggested by recent experiments. The imbibition front is always preceded by a precursor film, and the classical Lucas-Washburn √t scaling law is generally recovered, although some deviations may exist at large porosity. Moreover, the interface roughening is modified by wetting and confinement effects. Our results suggest that the interpretation of the recent experiments should be revised.

Abstract
We investigate the complex spatiotemporal dynamics in avalanche driven surface growth by means of scaling theory. We study local activity statistics, avalanche kinetics, and temporal correlations in the global interface velocity, obtaining different scaling relationships among the involved critical exponents depending on how far from or close to a critical point the system is. Our scaling arguments are very general and connect local and global magnitudes through several scaling relationships. We expect our results to be applicable in a wide range of systems exhibiting interface kinetic roughening driven by avalanches of local activity, either critical or not. As an example we apply the scaling theory to analyze avalanches and roughening of forced-flow imbibition fronts in excellent agreement with phase-field numerical integrations.

Abstract
We study avalanche dynamics and local activity of forced-flow imbibition fronts in disordered media. We focus on the front dynamics as the mean velocity of the interface v is decreased and the pinning state is approached. Scaling arguments allow us to obtain the statistics of avalanche sizes and durations, which become power-law distributed due to the existence of a critical point at v=0 . Results are compared with phase-field numerical simulations.

Abstract
We study memory effects in a kinetic roughening model. For d=1, a different dynamic scaling is uncovered in the memory dominated phases; the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling is restored in the absence of noise. dc=2 represents the critical dimension where memory is shown to smoothen the roughening front (alpha<or=0). Studies on a discrete atomistic model in the same universality class reconfirm the analytical results in the large time limit, while a different scaling behavior shows up for t<tau, with tau being the memory characteristic of the atomistic model. Results can be generalized for other nonconservative systems.

Abstract
Anchoring molecules, like amphiphilic polymers, are able to dynamically regulate membrane morphology. Such molecules insert their hydrophobic groups into the bilayer, generating a local membrane curvature. In order to minimize the elastic energy penalty, a dynamic shape instability may occur, as in the case of the curvature-driven pearling instability or the polymer-induced tubulation of lipid vesicles. We review recent works on modeling of such instabilities by means of a mesoscopic dynamic model of the phase-field kind, which take into account the bending energy of lipid bilayers.

Abstract
We study the influence of disorder strength on the interface roughening process in a phase-field model with locally conserved dynamics. We consider two cases where the mobility coefficient multiplying the locally conserved current is either constant throughout the system (the two-sided model) or becomes zero in the phase into which the interface advances (one-sided model). In the limit of weak disorder, both models are completely equivalent and can reproduce the physical process of a fluid diffusively invading a porous media, where super-rough scaling of the interface fluctuations occurs. On the other hand, increasing disorder causes the scaling properties to change to intrinsic anomalous scaling. In the limit of strong disorder this behavior prevails for the one-sided model, whereas for the two-sided case, nucleation of domains in front of the invading front are observed.

Abstract
Recent experiments on imbibition in columnar geometries show interfacial fluctuations whose dynamic scaling is not compatible with the usual nonlocal model governed by surface tension that results from a macroscopic description. To explore this discrepancy, we exhaustively analyze numerical integrations of a phase-field model with dichotomic columnar disorder. We find that two distinct behaviors are possible depending on the capillary contrast between the two values of disorder. In a high-contrast case, where interface evolution is mainly dominated by the disorder, an inherent anomalous scaling is always observed. Moreover, in agreement with experimental work, the interface motion has to be described through a local model. On the other hand, in a lower-contrast case, the interface is dominated by interfacial tension and can be well modeled by a nonlocal model. We have studied both spontaneous and forced-flow imbibition situations, giving a complete set of scaling exponents in each case, as well as a comparison to the experimental results.

Abstract
The scaling properties of the rough liquid-air interface formed in the spontaneous imbibition of a viscous liquid by a model porous medium are found to be very sensitive to the magnitude of the pressure difference applied at the liquid inlet. Interface fluctuations change from obeying intrinsic anomalous scaling at large negative pressure differences, to being super-rough with the same dynamic exponent z approximately =3 at less negative pressure differences, to finally obeying ordinary Family-Vicsek scaling with z approximately =2 at large positive pressure differences. This rich scenario reflects the relative importance on different length scales of capillary and permeability disorder, and the role of surface tension and viscous pressure in damping interface fluctuations.

Abstract
We show that time-dependent couplings may lead to nontrivial scaling properties of the surface fluctuations of the asymptotic regime in nonequilibrium kinetic roughening models. Three typical situations are studied. In the case of a crossover between two different rough regimes, the time-dependent coupling may result in anomalous scaling for scales above the crossover length. In a different setting, for a crossover from a rough to either a flat or damping regime, the time-dependent crossover length may conspire to produce a rough surface, although the most relevant term tends to flatten the surface. In addition, our analysis sheds light into an existing debate in the problem of spontaneous imbibition, where time-dependent couplings naturally arise in theoretical models and experiments.
