Multiple time-scale approach for a system of Brownian particles in a nonuniform temperature field

Clustering of particles in turbulence due to phoresis

We demonstrate that diffusiophoretic, thermophoretic, and chemotactic phenomena in turbulence lead to clustering of particles on multifractal sets that can be described using one single framework, valid when the particle size is much smaller than the smallest length scale of turbulence l_{0}. To quantify the clustering, we derive positive pair correlations and fractal dimensions that hold for scales smaller than l_{0}. For scales larger than l_{0} the pair-correlation function is predicted to show a stretched exponential decay towards 1. In the case of inhomogeneous turbulence we find that the fractal dimension depends on the direction of inhomogeneity. By performing experiments with particles in a turbulent gravity current we demonstrate clustering induced by salinity gradients in conformity to the theory. The particle size in the experiment is comparable to l_{0}, outside the strict validity region of the theory, suggesting that the theoretical predictions transfer to this practically relevant regime. This clustering mechanism may provide the key to the understanding of a multitude of processes such as formation of marine snow in the ocean and population dynamics of chemotactic bacteria.

Brownian colloids in underdamped and overdamped regimes with nonhomogeneous temperature

The motion of Brownian particles when temperature is spatially dependent is studied by stochastic simulations and theoretical analysis. Nonequilibrium steady probability distributions P(st)(z,v) for both underdamped and overdamped regimes are analyzed. The existence of local kinetic energy equipartition theorem is also discussed. The transition between both regimes is characterized by a dimensionless friction parameter. This study is applied to three physical systems of colloidal particles.

Localization-delocalization transitions in turbophoresis of inertial particles

Small aerosols drift down a temperature or turbulence gradient since faster particles fly longer distances before equilibration. That fundamental phenomenon, called thermophoresis or turbophoresis, is widely encountered in nature and used in industry. It is universally believed that particles moving down the kinetic energy gradient must concentrate in minima (say, on walls in turbulence). Here, we show that this is incorrect: escaping minima is possible for inertial particles whose time of equilibration is longer than the time to reach the minimum. "The best way out is always through": particles escape by flying through minima or reflecting from walls. We solve the problem analytically and find the phase transition as a sign change of the mean velocity. That means separation: light particles concentrate in a minimum while heavy particles spread away from it (gravity can reverse the effect). That discovery changes our understanding of that fundamental phenomenon and may find numerous applications.

Brownian motion in inhomogeneous suspensions

The Langevin description of Brownian motion in inhomogeneous suspensions is here revisited. Inhomogeneous suspensions are characterized by a position-dependent friction coefficient, which can significantly influence the dynamics of the suspended particles. Outstanding examples are suspensions in confinement or in the presence of a temperature gradient. The Langevin approach in inhomogeneous systems encounters a fundamental difficulty related to the interpretation of the multiplicative noise induced by the position-dependent friction. We show that the so-called Ito-Stratonovich dilemma is originated by the violation of the macroscopic force balance condition in the traditional procedure of eliminating the fast variables. Repairing this deficit, we rederive the extended overdamped Langevin equation directly from the infradamped Langevin equation. This is without invoking the Fokker-Planck formalism, such that the self-completeness of the Langevin framework is restored. Furthermore, we derive the generalized forms of the drift-force relation and the Smoluchowski equation for inhomogeneous suspensions in a straightforward manner.

Beyond the dynamic density functional theory for steady currents: application to driven colloidal particles in a channel

Motivated by recent studies on the dynamics of colloidal solutions in narrow channels, we consider the steady state properties of an assembly of noninteracting particles subject to the action of a traveling potential moving at a constant speed, while the solvent is modeled by a heat bath at rest in the laboratory frame. Here, since the description we propose takes into account the inertia of the colloidal particles, it is necessary to consider the evolution of both positions and momenta and study the governing equation for the one-particle phase-space distribution. First, we derive the asymptotic form of its solutions as an expansion in Hermite polynomials and their generic properties, such as the force and energy balance, and then we particularize our study to the case of an inverted parabolic potential barrier. We numerically obtain the steady state density and temperature profile and show that the expansion is rapidly convergent for large values of the friction constant and small drifting velocities. On the one hand, the present results confirm the previous studies based on the dynamic density functional theory (DDFT): On the other hand, when the friction constant is large, it display effects such as the presence of a wake behind the barrier and a strong inhomogeneity in the temperature field which are beyond the DDFT description.

Phase-space approach to dynamical density functional theory

The authors consider a system of interacting particles subjected to Langevin inertial dynamics and derive the governing time-dependent equation for the one-body density. They show that, after suitable truncations of the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy, and a multiple time scale analysis, they obtain a self-consistent equation involving only the one-body density. This study extends to arbitrary dimensions previous work on a one-dimensional fluid and highlights the subtleties of kinetic theory in the derivation of dynamical density functional theory.

Theory of thermostatted inhomogeneous granular fluids: A self-consistent density functional description

The authors present a study of the nonequilibrium statistical properties of a one dimensional hard-rod fluid dissipating energy via inelastic collisions and subject to the action of a Gaussian heat bath, simulating an external driving mechanism. They show that the description of the fluid based on the one-particle phase-space reduced distribution function, in principle necessary because of the presence of velocity dependent collisional dissipation, can be contracted to a simpler description in configurational space. Indeed, by means of a multiple-time-scale method the authors derive a self-consistent governing equation for the particle density distribution function. This equation is similar to the dynamic density functional equation employed in the study of colloids, but contains additional terms taking into account the inelastic nature of the fluid. Such terms cannot be derived from a Liapunov generating functional and contribute not only to the relaxational properties, but also to the nonequilibrium steady state properties. A validation of the theory against molecular dynamics simulations is presented in a series of cases, and good agreement is found.
