Extension of Space Syntax Methods to Generic Urban Variables

We studied generalization of a method for extending configurational studies to variables that are not exclusively geographical, in order to allow investigation of generic relationships in the built environment. We observed a number of limitations of the classical approach of configurational studies and we considered how a complex analytical method could be implemented in the study of non-topological variables, such as land use, noise pollution and financial or property rents. In order to do this, we established a system of relationships based on a labeled primary graph. Categorization of the labels of the links was performed on a generic variable, specifically, the predominant use of roads. The graph was then contracted using an optimization algorithm, which we describe. The algorithm allows the network to be reduced to a more streamlined system that can better analyze the relationships between the different categories. Application of the method showed that it is faster to identify weaknesses in urban networks, and then take measures to resolve them. The case study concerns the pedestrianization of the Colosseum area in Rome.

Using Graph Components Derived from an Associative Concept Dictionary to Predict fMRI Neural Activation Patterns that Represent the Meaning of Nouns

In this study, we introduce an original distance definition for graphs, called the Markov-inverse-F measure (MiF). This measure enables the integration of classical graph theory indices with new knowledge pertaining to structural feature extraction from semantic networks. MiF improves the conventional Jaccard and/or Simpson indices, and reconciles both the geodesic information (random walk) and co-occurrence adjustment (degree balance and distribution). We measure the effectiveness of graph-based coefficients through the application of linguistic graph information for a neural activity recorded during conceptual processing in the human brain. Specifically, the MiF distance is computed between each of the nouns used in a previous neural experiment and each of the in-between words in a subgraph derived from the Edinburgh Word Association Thesaurus of English. From the MiF-based information matrix, a machine learning model can accurately obtain a scalar parameter that specifies the degree to which each voxel in (the MRI image of) the brain is activated by each word or each principal component of the intermediate semantic features. Furthermore, correlating the voxel information with the MiF-based principal components, a new computational neurolinguistics model with a network connectivity paradigm is created. This allows two dimensions of context space to be incorporated with both semantic and neural distributional representations.

From complex structures to complex processes: percolation theory applied to the formation of a city

We investigate the morphology of the spatial pattern resulting from the division of land into the parcels that is observed in the centers of the cities, by analyzing the distribution function of the parcel areas. A simple model based on a two-dimensional bond percolation is employed to mimic the process of the formation of the city. The model reproduces the empirical distribution of the parcel areas that is found to exhibit the power law with the exponent tau=2.0. We argue that the city emerges from a collection of separated settlements in a process that can be described as a structural phase transition.

Intelligibility and first passage times in complex urban networks

Topology of urban environments can be represented by means of graphs. We explore the graph representations of several compact urban patterns by random walks. The expected time of recurrence and the expected first passage time to a node scales apparently linearly in all urban patterns we have studied. In space syntax theory, a positive relation between the local property of a node (qualified by connectivity or by the recurrence time) and the global property of the node (estimated in our approach by the first passage time to it) is known as intelligibility. Our approach, based on random walks, allows us to extend the notion of intelligibility onto the entire domain of complex networks and graph theory.
