Universal fractal structures in the weak interaction of solitary waves in generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Bi-Solitons on the Surface of a Deep Fluid: An Inverse Scattering Transform Perspective Based on Perturbation Theory

We investigate theoretically and numerically the dynamics of long-living oscillating coherent structures-bi-solitons-in the exact and approximate models for waves on the free surface of deep water. We generate numerically the bi-solitons of the approximate Dyachenko-Zakharov equation and fully nonlinear equations propagating without significant loss of energy for hundreds of the structure oscillation periods, which is hundreds of thousands of characteristic periods of the surface waves. To elucidate the long-living bi-soliton complex nature we apply an analytical-numerical approach based on the perturbation theory and the inverse scattering transform (IST) for the one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation model. We observe a periodic energy and momentum exchange between solitons and continuous spectrum radiation resulting in repetitive oscillations of the coherent structure. We find that soliton eigenvalues oscillate on stable trajectories experiencing a slight drift on a scale of hundreds of the structure oscillation periods so that the eigenvalue dynamics is in good agreement with predictions of the IST perturbation theory. Based on the obtained results, we conclude that the IST perturbation theory justifies the existence of the long-living bi-solitons on the surface of deep water that emerge as a result of a balance between their dominant solitonic part and a portion of continuous spectrum radiation.

Perturbation theory for propagating magnetic droplet solitons

Droplet solitons are strongly nonlinear, inherently dynamic structures in the magnetization of ferromagnets, balancing dispersion (exchange energy) with focusing nonlinearity (strong perpendicular anisotropy). Large droplet solitons have the approximate form of a circular domain wall sustained by precession and, in contrast to single magnetic vortices, are predicted to propagate in an extended, homogeneous magnetic medium. In this work, multiscale perturbation theory is used to develop an analytical framework for investigating the impact of additional physical effects on the behaviour of a propagating droplet. After first developing soliton perturbation theory in the general context of Hamiltonian systems, a number of physical phenomena of current interest are investigated. These include droplet–droplet and droplet–boundary interactions, spatial magnetic field inhomogeneities, spin transfer torque induced forcing in a nanocontact device and damping. Their combined effects demonstrate the fundamental mechanisms for a previously observed droplet drift instability and under what conditions a slowly propagating droplet can be supported by the nanocontact, important considerations for applications. This framework emphasizes the particle-like dynamics of the droplet, providing analytically tractable and practical predictions for modern experimental configurations.

Radiationless energy exchange in three-soliton collisions

We revisit the problem of the three-soliton collisions in the weakly perturbed sine-Gordon equation and develop an effective three-particle model allowing us to explain many interesting features observed in numerical simulations of the soliton collisions. In particular, we explain why collisions between two kinks and one antikink are observed to be practically elastic or strongly inelastic depending on relative initial positions of the kinks. The fact that the three-soliton collisions become more elastic with an increase in the collision velocity also becomes clear in the framework of the three-particle model. The three-particle model does not involve internal modes of the kinks, but it gives a qualitative description to all the effects observed in the three-soliton collisions, including the fractal scattering and the existence of short-lived three-soliton bound states. The radiationless energy exchange between the colliding solitons in weakly perturbed integrable systems takes place in the vicinity of the separatrix multi-soliton solutions of the corresponding integrable equations, where even small perturbations can result in a considerable change in the collision outcome. This conclusion is illustrated through the use of the reduced three-particle model.

Universal map for fractal structures in weak interactions of solitary waves

Fractal scatterings in weak solitary-wave interactions are analyzed for generalized nonlinear Schrödiger equations (GNLS). Using asymptotic methods, these weak interactions are reduced to a universal second-order map. This map gives the same fractal-scattering patterns as those in the GNLS equations both qualitatively and quantitatively. Scaling laws of these fractals are also derived.
