Synchronization of stochastic bistable systems by biperiodic signals

Logical response induced by temperature asymmetry

It is known that the reliable logical response can be extracted from a noisy bistable system at an intermediate value of noise strength when two random or periodic, two-level, square waveform serve as the inputs. The asymmetry of the potential has a very important role and dictates the type of logical operation, such as or or and, exhibited by the system. Here we show that one can construct logic gates with symmetric bistable potential if the two states of the double-well are thermalized with two different heat baths. It has been found that if a given state is kept at a sufficiently low temperature compared to the other, the system shows one kind of logic behavior (say, or). Interestingly, the system's response turns into the other kind (say, and) if the temperature of the initial low-temperature well is increased gradually and the quality of the logical response first improves and then weakens after passing through a maximum at a particular value. However, the reliability of the second kind of logical response (and) is not as good as the first kind (or) and depends on the amplitude of the inputs. Still one can construct both kinds of logic gates with maximum reliability by properly choosing the initial low-temperature well.

Controlling the phase locking of stochastic magnetic bits for ultra-low power computation

When fabricating magnetic memories, one of the main challenges is to maintain the bit stability while downscaling. Indeed, for magnetic volumes of a few thousand nm(3), the energy barrier between magnetic configurations becomes comparable to the thermal energy at room temperature. Then, switches of the magnetization spontaneously occur. These volatile, superparamagnetic nanomagnets are generally considered useless. But what if we could use them as low power computational building blocks? Remarkably, they can oscillate without the need of any external dc drive, and despite their stochastic nature, they can beat in unison with an external periodic signal. Here we show that the phase locking of superparamagnetic tunnel junctions can be induced and suppressed by electrical noise injection. We develop a comprehensive model giving the conditions for synchronization, and predict that it can be achieved with a total energy cost lower than 10(-13) J. Our results open the path to ultra-low power computation based on the controlled synchronization of oscillators.

Coherence depression in stochastic excitable systems with two-frequency forcing

We study the response of two generic neuron models, the leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) model and the leaky integrate-and-fire model with dynamic threshold (LIFDT) (i.e., with memory) to a stimulus consisting of two sinusoidal drives with incommensurate frequency, an amplitude modulation ("envelope") noise and a relatively weak additive noise. Spectral and coherence analysis of responses to such naturalistic stimuli reveals how the LIFDT model exhibits better correlation between modulation and spike train even in the presence of both noises. However, a resonance-induced synchrony, occurring when the beat frequency between the sinusoids is close to the intrinsic neuronal firing rate, decreases the coherence in the dynamic threshold case. Under suprathreshold conditions, the modulation noise simultaneously decreases the linear spectral coherence between the spikes and the whole stimulus, as well as between spikes and the stimulus envelope. Our study shows that the coefficient of variation of the envelope fluctuations is positively correlated with the degree of coherence depression. As the coherence function quantifies the linear information transmission, our findings indicate that under certain conditions, a transmission loss results when an excitable system with adaptive properties encodes a beat with frequency in the vicinity of its mean firing rate.

Signal transmission by vibrational resonance in one-way coupled bistable systems

Low-frequency signal transmission in one-way coupled bistable systems subject to a high-frequency force is studied. Two cases including the high-frequency force on all sites (case 1) and only on the first site (case 2) are considered. In these two cases, vibrational resonance induced by the high-frequency force can play an active role to effectively improve the signal transmission, and undamped signal transmission can be found in a broad parameter region. The combinative action of injected low-frequency signal, high-frequency driving, and coupling is of importance. Our findings suggest that high-frequency signal could be properly used in low-frequency signal transmission, and especially the implementation of high-frequency force simply on the first site for case 2 is meaningful for its simplicity and high efficiency.

Vibrational resonance and the detection of aperiodic binary signals

We present the experimental and numerical study of a method for detecting aperiodic binary signals in a bistable, vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). The method uses the phenomenon of vibrational resonance, in presence of a fixed level of noise. We show that the addition of a periodic signal with a period much shorter than the bit duration of the aperiodic input signal allows one to significantly increase the cross-correlation coefficient between the input and the output, as well as to substantially decrease the bit error rate. The experimental observation of a time lag between the input and the output of the VCSEL due the high-frequency modulation is reported. The effect of an asymmetry of the bistable quasipotential on the detection is also analyzed. The numerical results of simulations in a simple model are in qualitative agreement with the experiment.

Array enhancement of stochastic synchronization and signal-to-noise ratio gain in the nonlinear regime of signal transmission

The nonlinear transformation of an external noisy signal by an array of noninteracting elements with internal noise is considered. The array simulates a neuronal system that processes spike trains. It is shown that increasing the number of array elements entails significant extending of the stochastic synchronization region and improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The effects are demonstrated for arrays of triggers, overdamped bistable oscillators, and Fitzhugh-Nagumo systems. The interrelation between SNR improvement and the efficiency of information processing is discussed.
