A matter of time: Formation and interpretation of the Bicoid morphogen gradient

Spatially distributed signaling molecules, known as morphogens, provide spatial information during development. A host of different morphogens have now been identified, from subcellular gradients through to morphogens that act across a whole embryo. These gradients form over a wide-range of timescales, from seconds to hours, and their time windows for interpretation are also highly variable; the processes of morphogen gradient formation and interpretation are highly dynamic. The morphogen Bicoid (Bcd), present in the early Drosophila embryo, is essential for setting up the future Drosophila body segments. Due to its accessibility for both genetic perturbations and imaging, this system has provided key insights into how precise patterning can occur within a highly dynamic system. Here, we review the temporal scales of Bcd gradient formation and interpretation. In particular, we discuss the quantitative evidence for different models of Bcd gradient formation, outline the time windows for Bcd interpretation, and describe how Bcd temporally adapts its own ability to be interpreted. The utilization of temporal information in morphogen readout may provide crucial inputs to ensure precise spatial patterning, particularly in rapidly developing systems.

Self-similar Turing patterns: An anomalous diffusion consequence

In this work, we show that under specific anomalous diffusion conditions, chemical systems can produce well-ordered self-similar concentration patterns through diffusion-driven instability. We also find spiral patterns and patterns with mixtures of rotational symmetries. The type of anomalous diffusion discussed in this work, either subdiffusion or superdiffusion, is a consequence of the medium heterogeneity, and it is modeled through a space-dependent diffusion coefficient with a power-law functional form.

Continuous-time random walks on networks with vertex- and time-dependent forcing

We have investigated the transport of particles moving as random walks on the vertices of a network, subject to vertex- and time-dependent forcing. We have derived the generalized master equations for this transport using continuous time random walks, characterized by jump and waiting time densities, as the underlying stochastic process. The forcing is incorporated through a vertex- and time-dependent bias in the jump densities governing the random walking particles. As a particular case, we consider particle forcing proportional to the concentration of particles on adjacent vertices, analogous to self-chemotactic attraction in a spatial continuum. Our algebraic and numerical studies of this system reveal an interesting pair-aggregation pattern formation in which the steady state is composed of a high concentration of particles on a small number of isolated pairs of adjacent vertices. The steady states do not exhibit this pair aggregation if the transport is random on the vertices, i.e., without forcing. The manifestation of pair aggregation on a transport network may thus be a signature of self-chemotactic-like forcing.

Anomalous transport regimes and asymptotic concentration distributions in the presence of advection and diffusion on a comb structure

We study the transport of impurity particles on a comb structure in the presence of advection. The main body concentration and asymptotic concentration distributions are obtained. Seven different transport regimes occur on the comb structure with finite teeth: classical diffusion, advection, quasidiffusion, subdiffusion, slow classical diffusion, and two kinds of slow advection. Quasidiffusion deserves special attention. It is characterized by a linear growth of the mean-square displacement. However, quasidiffusion is an anomalous transport regime. We established that a change in transport regimes in time leads to a change in regimes in space. Concentration tails have a cascade structure, namely, consisting of several parts.
