Coherent wave patterns sustained by a localized inhomogeneity in an excitable medium

Selection of spatiotemporal patterns in arrays of spatially distributed oscillators indirectly coupled via a diffusive environment

Emergence of self-organized behaviors in diverse living systems often depends on population density. In these systems, cell-cell communications are usually mediated by the surrounding environment. Collective behaviors (e.g., synchrony and dynamical quorum sensing) of such systems with stirred environment have been extensively studied, but the spatiotemporal dynamics of the oscillators coupled via a diffusive environment (without stirring) is rather understudied. We here perform a computational study on the selection and competition of wave patterns in arrays of spatially distributed oscillators immersed in a diffusive medium. We find that population density plays a crucial role in the selection of wave patterns: (i) for a single spiral in the system, its rotation either inward or outward could be controlled by population density, and (ii) for spiral and target waves coexisting initially in the system, wave competition happens and population density decides which type of wave will finally survive. The latter phenomenon is further confirmed in a system whose individual element is excitable rather than self-sustained oscillatory. The mechanism underlying all these observations is attributed to the frequency competition. Our results in the excitable case may have implications on the experimental results.

Pattern Selection in Network of Coupled Multi-Scroll Attractors

Multi-scroll chaotic attractor makes the oscillator become more complex in dynamic behaviors. The collective behaviors of coupled oscillators with multi-scroll attractors are investigated in the regular network in two-dimensional array, which the local kinetics is described by an improved Chua circuit. A feasible scheme of negative feedback with diversity is imposed on the network to stabilize the spatial patterns. Firstly, the Chua circuit is improved by replacing the nonlinear term with Sine function to generate infinite aquariums so that multi-scroll chaotic attractors could be generated under appropriate parameters, which could be detected by calculating the Lyapunov exponent in the parameter region. Furthermore, negative feedback with different gains (D1, D2) is imposed on the local square center area A2 and outer area A1 of the network, it is found that spiral wave, target wave could be developed in the network under appropriate feedback gain with diversity and size of controlled area. Particularly, homogeneous state could be reached after synchronization by selecting appropriate feedback gain and controlled size in the network. Finally, the distribution for statistical factors of synchronization is calculated in the two-parameter space to understand the transition of pattern region. It is found that developed spiral waves, target waves often are associated with smaller factor of synchronization. These results show that emergence of sustained spiral wave and continuous target wave could be effective for further suppression of spatiotemporal chaos in network by generating stable pacemaker completely.

Chiral selection and frequency response of spiral waves in reaction-diffusion systems under a chiral electric field

Chirality is one of the most fundamental properties of many physical, chemical, and biological systems. However, the mechanisms underlying the onset and control of chiral symmetry are largely understudied. We investigate possibility of chirality control in a chemical excitable system (the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction) by application of a chiral (rotating) electric field using the Oregonator model. We find that unlike previous findings, we can achieve the chirality control not only in the field rotation direction, but also opposite to it, depending on the field rotation frequency. To unravel the mechanism, we further develop a comprehensive theory of frequency synchronization based on the response function approach. We find that this problem can be described by the Adler equation and show phase-locking phenomena, known as the Arnold tongue. Our theoretical predictions are in good quantitative agreement with the numerical simulations and provide a solid basis for chirality control in excitable media.

Reversal of spiral waves in an oscillatory system caused by an inhomogeneity

Spatial heterogeneities are commonly found in realistic systems and play significant roles in dynamics of spiral waves. We here demonstrate a novel phenomenon that a localized inhomogeneity put around the spiral core could lead to the reversal of spiral waves in an oscillatory system, e.g., the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. With the amplitude-phase representation, we analyze underling mechanism and conditions of the wave reversal in detail, which is found to agree with the numerical evidence.

Attraction and repulsion of spiral waves by inhomogeneity of conduction anisotropy--a model of spiral wave interaction with electrical remodeling of heart tissue

Various forms of heart disease are associated with remodeling of the heart muscle, which results in a perturbation of cell-to-cell electrical coupling. These perturbations may alter the trajectory of spiral wave drift in the heart muscle. We investigate the effect of spatially extended inhomogeneity of transverse cell coupling on the spiral wave trajectory using a simple active media model. The spiral wave was either attracted or repelled from the center of inhomogeneity as a function of cell excitability and gradient of the cell coupling. High levels of excitability resulted in an attraction of the wave to the center of inhomogeneity, whereas low levels resulted in an escape and termination of the spiral wave. The spiral wave drift velocity was related to the gradient of the coupling and the initial position of the wave. In a diseased heart, a region of altered transverse coupling corresponds with local gap junction remodeling that may be responsible for stabilization-destabilization of spiral waves and hence reflect potentially important targets in the treatment of heart arrhythmias.

Puff-wave transition in an inhomogeneous model for calcium signals

In many cell types, calcium ion channels on the endoplasmic reticulum membrane occur in a clustered distribution. The channels generate either localized puffs, each comprising channels of only one cluster, or global calcium waves. In this work we model the calcium system as a two-dimensional lattice of active elements distributed regularly in an otherwise passive space. We address an important feature of the puff-wave transition, which is the difference in lifetime of puffs at a few hundred milliseconds and long-lived global waves with periods of several seconds. We show that such a lifetime difference between puffs and waves can be understood with strongly reduced ordinary differential equations modified by a time-scale factor that takes into account the coupling strength of active and passive regions determined by the Ca2+ diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, we show that the point model can also describe very well the dependence of Ca2+ oscillation characteristics on the cluster-cluster distance in the case of large diffusivity.
