Anomalous protein kinetics on low-fouling surfaces

In this work, protein-surface interactions were probed in terms of adsorption and desorption of a model protein, bovine serum albumin, on a low-fouling surface with single-molecule localization microscopy. Single-molecule experiments enable precise determination of both adsorption and desorption rates. Strikingly the experimental data show anomalous desorption kinetics, evident as a surface dwell time that exhibits a power-law distribution, i.e. a heavy-tailed rather than the expected exponential distribution. As a direct consequence of this heavy-tailed distribution, the average desorption rate depends upon the time scale of the experiment and the protein surface concentration does not reach equilibrium. Further analysis reveals that the observed anomalous desorption emerges due to the reversible formation of a small fraction of soluble protein multimers (small oligomers), such that each one desorbs from the surface with a different rate. The overall kinetics can be described by a series of elementary reactions, yielding simple scaling relations that predict experimental observations. This work reveals a mechanistic origin for anomalous desorption kinetics that can be employed to interpret observations where low-protein fouling surfaces eventually foul when in long-term contact with protein solutions. The work also provides new insights that can be used to define design principles for non-fouling surfaces and to predict their performance.

Occupancy correlations in the asymmetric simple inclusion process

The asymmetric simple inclusion process (ASIP)-a lattice-gas model for unidirectional transport with irreversible aggregation-has been proposed as an inclusion counterpart of the asymmetric simple exclusion process and as a batch service counterpart of the tandem Jackson network. To date, the analytical tractability of the model has been limited: while the average particle density in the model is easy to compute, very little is known about the joint occupancy distribution. To partially bridge this gap, we study occupancy correlations in the ASIP. We take an analytical approach to this problem and derive an exact formula for the covariance matrix of the steady-state occupancy vector. We verify the validity of this formula numerically in small ASIP systems, where Monte Carlo simulations can provide reliable estimates for correlations in reasonable time, and further use it to draw a comprehensive picture of spatial occupancy correlations in ASIP systems of arbitrary size.

Slow encounters of particle pairs in branched structures

On infinite homogeneous structures, two random walkers meet with certainty if and only if the structure is recurrent; i.e., a single random walker returns to its starting point with probability 1. However, on general inhomogeneous structures this property does not hold, and, although a single random walker will certainly return to its starting point, two moving particles may never meet. This striking property has been shown to hold, for instance, on infinite combs. Due to the huge variety of natural phenomena which can be modeled in terms of encounters between two (or more) particles diffusing in comblike structures, it is fundamental to investigate if and, if so, to what extent similar effects may take place in finite structures. By means of numerical simulations we provide evidence that, indeed, even on finite structures, the topological inhomogeneity can qualitatively affect the two-particle problem. In particular, the mean encounter time can be polynomially larger than the time expected from the related one-particle problem.

Occupation probabilities and fluctuations in the asymmetric simple inclusion process

The asymmetric simple inclusion process (ASIP), a lattice-gas model of unidirectional transport and aggregation, was recently proposed as an "inclusion" counterpart of the asymmetric simple exclusion process. In this paper we present an exact closed-form expression for the probability that a given number of particles occupies a given set of consecutive lattice sites. Our results are expressed in terms of the entries of Catalan's trapezoids-number arrays which generalize Catalan's numbers and Catalan's triangle. We further prove that the ASIP is asymptotically governed by the following: (i) an inverse square-root law of occupation, (ii) a square-root law of fluctuation, and (iii) a Rayleigh law for the distribution of interexit times. The universality of these results is discussed.

Coagulation reactions in low dimensions: Revisiting subdiffusive A+A reactions in one dimension

We present a theory for the coagulation reaction A+A-->A for particles moving subdiffusively in one dimension. Our theory is tested against numerical simulations of the concentration of A particles as a function of time ("anomalous kinetics") and of the interparticle distribution function as a function of interparticle distance and time. We find that the theory captures the correct behavior asymptotically and also at early times, and that it does so whether the particles are nearly diffusive or very subdiffusive. We find that, as in the normal diffusion problem, an interparticle gap responsible for the anomalous kinetics develops and grows with time. This corrects an earlier claim to the contrary on our part.
