Departure of some parameter-dependent spectral statistics of irregular quantum graphs from random matrix theory predictions

Coupled unidirectional chaotic microwave graphs

We experimentally investigate the undirected open microwave network Γ with internal absorption composed of two coupled directed halves, unidirectional networks Γ_{+} and Γ_{-}, corresponding to two possible directions of motion on their edges. The two-port scattering matrix of the network Γ is measured and the spectral statistics and the elastic enhancement factor of the network are evaluated. The comparison of the number of experimental resonances with the theoretical one predicted by the Weyl's law shows that within the experimental resolution the resonances are doubly degenerate. This conclusion was also corroborated by the numerical calculations. Though the network is characterized by the time-reversal symmetry, the missing level spectral statistics and the elastic enhancement factor are rather close to the Gaussian unitary ensemble predictions in random matrix theory. We used numerical calculations for the open nondissipative quantum graph possessing the same structure as the microwave network Γ to investigate the doublet structures in the spectrum which otherwise would not be experimentally resolved. We show that the doublet size distribution is close to the Poisson distribution.

Quantum Chaos and Level Dynamics

We review the application of level dynamics to spectra of quantally chaotic systems. We show that the statistical mechanics approach gives us predictions about level statistics intermediate between integrable and chaotic dynamics. Then we discuss in detail different statistical measures involving level dynamics, such as level avoided-crossing distributions, level slope distributions, or level curvature distributions. We show both the aspects of universality in these distributions and their limitations. We concentrate in some detail on measures imported from the quantum information approach such as the fidelity susceptibility, and more generally, geometric tensor matrix elements. The possible open problems are suggested.

Eigenfunction and eigenmode-spacing statistics in chaotic photonic crystal graphs

The statistical properties of wave chaotic systems of varying dimensionalities and realizations have been studied extensively. These systems are commonly characterized by the statistics of the eigenmode spacings and the statistics of the eigenfunctions. Here, we propose photonic crystal (PC) defect waveguide graphs as a physical setting for chaotic graph studies. Photonic crystal waveguides possess a dispersion relation for the propagating modes, which is engineerable. Graphs constructed by joining these waveguides possess junctions and bends with distinct scattering properties. We present numerically determined statistical properties of an ensemble of such PC graphs including both eigenfunction amplitude and eigenmode-spacing studies. Our proposed system is compatible with silicon nanophotonic technology and opens chaotic graph studies to a new community of researchers.

Experimental study of closed and open microwave waveguide graphs with preserved and partially violated time-reversal invariance

We report on experiments that were performed with microwave waveguide systems and demonstrate that in the frequency range of a single transversal mode they may serve as a model for closed and open quantum graphs. These consist of bonds that are connected at vertices. On the bonds, they are governed by the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with boundary conditions imposed at the vertices. The resulting transport properties through the vertices may be expressed in terms of a vertex scattering matrix. Quantum graphs with incommensurate bond lengths attracted interest within the field of quantum chaos because, depending on the characteristics of the vertex scattering matrix, its wave dynamic may exhibit features of a typical quantum system with chaotic counterpart. In distinction to microwave networks, which serve as an experimental model of quantum graphs with Neumann boundary conditions, the vertex scattering matrices associated with a waveguide system depend on the wave number and the wave functions can be determined experimentally. We analyze the spectral properties of microwave waveguide systems with preserved and partially violated time-reversal invariance, and the properties of the associated wave functions. Furthermore, we study properties of the scattering matrix describing the measurement process within the framework of random matrix theory for quantum chaotic scattering systems.

Experimental and numerical investigation of parametric spectral properties of quantum graphs with unitary or symplectic symmetry

We present experimental and numerical results for the parametric fluctuation properties in the spectra of classically chaotic quantum graphs with unitary or symplectic symmetry. A level dynamics is realized by changing the lengths of a few bonds parametrically. The long-range correlations in the spectra reveal at a fixed parameter value deviations from those expected for generic chaotic systems with corresponding universality class. They originate from modes which are confined to individual bonds or explore only a fraction of the quantum graph. Similarly, discrepancies are observed in the avoided-crossing distribution, velocity correlation function, and the curvature distribution of the level dynamics which also may be attributed to such localized modes. We demonstrate that these may be easily identified by inspecting the level dynamics and consequently their nonuniversal contributions to the parametric spectral properties may be diminished considerably. This is corroborated by numerical studies.

Spectral properties of directed random networks with modular structure

We study spectra of directed networks with inhibitory and excitatory couplings. We investigate in particular eigenvector localization properties of various model networks for different values of correlation among their entries. Spectra of random networks with completely uncorrelated entries show a circular distribution with delocalized eigenvectors, whereas networks with correlated entries have localized eigenvectors. In order to understand the origin of localization we track the spectra as a function of connection probability and directionality. As connections are made directed, eigenstates start occurring in complex-conjugate pairs and the eigenvalue distribution combined with the localization measure shows a rich pattern. Moreover, for a very well distinguished community structure, the whole spectrum is localized except few eigenstates at the boundary of the circular distribution. As the network deviates from the community structure there is a sudden change in the localization property for a very small value of deformation from the perfect community structure. We search for this effect for the whole range of correlation strengths and for different community configurations. Furthermore, we investigate spectral properties of a metabolic network of zebrafish and compare them with those of the model networks.

Parameter-dependent spectral statistics of chaotic quantum graphs: Neumann versus circular orthogonal ensemble boundary conditions

The parameter-dependent spectral statistics of totally connected quantum graphs with n = 4-30 vertices, such as the parametric velocities correlation functions and the distribution of curvatures, are studied. The inverse participation ratio (IPR), an important measure of localization effects, was also numerically investigated. In the calculations, we successfully used two different theoretical approaches. The first approach was based on the graphs' eigenenergies and wave functions calculations, while the second one used the eigenphases and the eigenvectors of the bond scattering matrix S(k). We considered graphs with Neumann and circular orthogonal ensemble (COE) boundary conditions. We show that in contrast to large Neumann graphs, for which the departure of many parameter-dependent spectral statistics from the random matrix theory (RMT) predictions is observed, for large COE graphs, the spectral statistics and IPR are in good agreement with the RMT predictions.

Experimental investigation of the enhancement factor for microwave irregular networks with preserved and broken time reversal symmetry in the presence of absorption

We present the results of the experimental study of the two-port scattering matrix S[over ] elastic enhancement factor W{S,beta} for microwave irregular networks simulating quantum graphs with preserved and broken time reversal symmetry in the presence of moderate and strong absorption. In the experiment, quantum graphs with preserved time reversal symmetry were simulated by microwave networks which were built of coaxial cables and attenuators connected by joints. Absorption in the networks was controlled by the length of microwave cables and the use of microwave attenuators. In order to simulate quantum graphs with broken time reversal symmetry we used the microwave networks with microwave circulators. We show that the experimental results obtained for networks with moderate and strong absorption are in good agreement with the ones obtained within the framework of random matrix theory.
