Quasiperiodic forcing of coupled chaotic systems

Classical route to ergodicity and scarring in collective quantum systems

Ergodicity, a fundamental concept in statistical mechanics, is not yet a fully understood phenomena for closed quantum systems, particularly its connection with the underlying chaos. In this review, we consider a few examples of collective quantum systems to unveil the intricate relationship of ergodicity as well as its deviation due to quantum scarring phenomena with their classical counterpart. A comprehensive overview of classical and quantum chaos is provided, along with the tools essential for their detection. Furthermore, we survey recent theoretical and experimental advancements in the domain of ergodicity and its violations. This review aims to illuminate the classical perspective of quantum scarring phenomena in interacting quantum systems.

Dynamics of quasiperiodically driven spin systems

We study the stroboscopic dynamics of a spin-S object subjected to δ-function kicks in the transverse magnetic field which is generated following the Fibonacci sequence. The corresponding classical Hamiltonian map is constructed in the large spin limit, S→∞. On evolving such a map for large kicking strength and time period, the phase space appears to be chaotic; interestingly, however, the geodesic distance increases linearly with the stroboscopic time implying that the Lyapunov exponent is zero. We derive the Sutherland invariant for the underlying SO(3) matrix governing the dynamics of classical spin variables and study the orbits for weak kicking strength. For the quantum dynamics, we observe that although the phase coherence of a state is retained throughout the time evolution, the fluctuations in the mean values of the spin operators exhibit fractality which is also present in the Floquet eigenstates. Interestingly, the presence of an interaction with another spin results in an ergodic dynamics leading to infinite temperature thermalization.

Synchronous behaviour of two interacting oscillatory systems undergoing quasiperiodic route to chaos

Thermoacoustic instability, caused by a positive feedback between the unsteady heat release and the acoustic field in a combustor, is a major challenge faced in most practical combustors such as those used in rockets and gas turbines. We employ the synchronization theory for understanding the coupling between the unsteady heat release and the acoustic field of a thermoacoustic system. Interactions between coupled subsystems exhibiting different collective dynamics such as periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic oscillations are addressed. Even though synchronization studies have focused on different dynamical states separately, synchronous behaviour of two coupled systems exhibiting a quasiperiodic route to chaos has not been studied. In this study, we report the first experimental observation of different synchronous behaviours between two subsystems of a thermoacoustic system exhibiting such a transition as reported in Kabiraj et al. [Chaos 22, 023129 (2012)]. A rich variety of synchronous behaviours such as phase locking, intermittent phase locking, and phase drifting are observed as the dynamics of such subsystem change. The observed synchronization behaviour is further characterized using phase locking value, correlation coefficient, and relative mean frequency. These measures clearly reveal the boundaries between different states of synchronization.

Electromagnetic oscillations in a driven nonlinear resonator: a description of complex nonlinear dynamics

Many intriguing properties of driven nonlinear resonators, including the appearance of chaos, are very important for understanding the universal features of nonlinear dynamical systems and can have great practical significance. We consider a cylindrical cavity resonator driven by an alternating voltage and filled with a nonlinear nondispersive medium. It is assumed that the medium lacks a center of inversion and the dependence of the electric displacement on the electric field can be approximated by an exponential function. We show that the Maxwell equations are integrated exactly in this case and the field components in the cavity are represented in terms of implicit functions of special form. The driven electromagnetic oscillations in the cavity are found to display very interesting temporal behavior and their Fourier spectra contain singular continuous components. This is a demonstration of the existence of a singular continuous (fractal) spectrum in an exactly integrable system.

Relaying phase synchrony in chaotic oscillator chains

We study the manner in which the effect of an external drive is transmitted through mutually coupled response systems by examining the phase synchrony between the drive and the response. Two different coupling schemes are used. Homogeneous couplings are via the same variables while heterogeneous couplings are through different variables. With the latter scenario, synchronization regimes are truncated with an increasing number of mutually coupled oscillators in contrast to homogeneous coupling schemes. Our results are illustrated for systems of coupled chaotic Rössler oscillators.
