Simple model for vibration-translation exchange at high temperatures: effects of multiquantum transitions on the relaxation of a N2 gas flow behind a shock

Predicting acoustic relaxation absorption in gas mixtures for extraction of composition relaxation contributions

The existing molecular relaxation models based on both parallel relaxation theory and series relaxation theory cannot extract the contributions of gas compositions to acoustic relaxation absorption in mixtures. In this paper, we propose an analytical model to predict acoustic relaxation absorption and clarify composition relaxation contributions based on the rate-determining energy transfer processes in molecular relaxation in excitable gases. By combining parallel and series relaxation theory, the proposed model suggests that the vibration-translation process of the lowest vibrational mode in each composition provides the primary deexcitation path of the relaxation energy, and the rate-determining vibration-vibration processes between the lowest mode and others dominate the coupling energy transfer between different modes. Thus, each gas composition contributes directly one single relaxation process to the molecular relaxation in mixture, which can be illustrated by the decomposed acoustic relaxation absorption spectrum of the single relaxation process. The proposed model is validated by simulation results in good agreement with experimental data such as N2, O2, CO2, CH4 and their mixtures.

Nonequilibrium shock-heated nitrogen flows using a rovibrational state-to-state method

A rovibrational collisional model is developed to study the internal energy excitation and dissociation processes behind a strong shock wave in a nitrogen flow. The reaction rate coefficients are obtained from the ab initio database of the NASA Ames Research Center. The master equation is coupled with a one-dimensional flow solver to study the nonequilibrium phenomena encountered in the gas during a hyperbolic reentry into Earth's atmosphere. The analysis of the populations of the rovibrational levels demonstrates how rotational and vibrational relaxation proceed at the same rate. This contrasts with the common misconception that translational and rotational relaxation occur concurrently. A significant part of the relaxation process occurs in non-quasi-steady-state conditions. Exchange processes are found to have a significant impact on the relaxation of the gas, while predissociation has a negligible effect. The results obtained by means of the full rovibrational collisional model are used to assess the validity of reduced order models (vibrational collisional and multitemperature) which are based on the same kinetic database. It is found that thermalization and dissociation are drastically overestimated by the reduced order models. The reasons of the failure differ in the two cases. In the vibrational collisional model the overestimation of the dissociation is a consequence of the assumption of equilibrium between the rotational energy and the translational energy. The multitemperature model fails to predict the correct thermochemical relaxation due to the failure of the quasi-steady-state assumption, used to derive the phenomenological rate coefficient for dissociation.

State-to-state modeling of radiation coupled to vibration-translation relaxation and dissociation in nonequilibrium gas flows

A radiation model is developed to obtain evolution of band intensities according to the state-to-state (STS) approach by considering vibration-translation and vibration-electronic jumps and dissociation. Investigation of the behavior of a nonequilibrium N(2) gas flow behind a shock shows that the radiation intensity remains weak and the flow is far from radiative equilibrium. Similar intensities are predicted by pure STS and hybrid approaches based on existing radiation models. However, the coupling between physicochemical and radiative processes increases with radiation intensity.

State-specific dissociation modeling with multiquantum vibration-translation transitions

An efficient state-specific model of dissociation using a quadrature approach is proposed by considering multiquantum vibration-translation (VT) transitions (between bound and quasibound vibrational levels) according to the forced harmonic oscillator theory. Application of this model to a pure N₂ gas flow behind a plane shock wave shows that dissociation has a large influence on intermediate and higher vibrational levels and is characterized by state-specific incubation distances, before which VT energy exchanges remain the dominant mechanism just behind the shock.
