Phase transitions in the three-state Ising spin-glass model with finite connectivity

Inverse transitions and disappearance of the λ-line in the asymmetric random-field Ising and Blume-Capel models

We report on reentrance in the random-field Ising and Blume-Capel models, induced by an asymmetric bimodal random-field distribution. The conventional continuous line of transitions between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases, the λ-line, is wiped away by the asymmetry. The phase diagram, then, consists of only first-order transition lines that always end at ordered critical points. We find that, while for symmetric random-field distributions there is no reentrance, the asymmetry in the random-field results in a range of temperatures for which magnetization shows reentrance. While this does not give rise to an inverse transition in the Ising model, for the Blume-Capel model, however, there is a line of first-order inverse phase transitions that ends at an inverse-ordered critical point. We show that the location of the inverse transitions can be inferred from the ground-state phase diagram of the model.

Geometrical frustration and cluster spin glass with random graphs

We develop a based on a sparse random graph to account for the interplay between geometric frustration and disorder in cluster magnetism. Our theory allows introduction of the cluster network connectivity as a controllable parameter. Two types of inner cluster geometry are considered: triangular and tetrahedral. The theory was developed for general, nonuniform intracluster interactions, but in the present paper the results presented correspond to uniform, antiferromagnetic (AF) intraclusters interaction J_{0}/J. The clusters are represented by nodes on a finite connectivity random graph, and the intercluster interactions are randomly Gaussian distributed. The graph realizations are treated in replica theory using the formalism of order parameter functions, which allows one to calculate the distribution of local fields and, as a consequence, the relevant observable. In the case of triangular cluster geometry, there is the onset of a classical spin liquid state at a temperature T^{*}/J and then, a cluster spin glass (CSG) phase at a temperature T_{/}J. The CSG ground state is robust even for very weak disorder or large negative J_{0}/J. These results does not depend on the network connectivity. Nevertheless, variations in the connectivity strongly affect the level of frustration f_{p}=-Θ_{CW}/T_{f} for large J_{0}/J. In contrast, for the nonfrustrated tetrahedral cluster geometry, the CSG ground state is suppressed for weak disorder or large negative J_{0}/J. The CSG boundary phase presents a reentrance which is dependent on the network connectivity.

Branching random graph model of rough surfaces describes thermal properties of the effective molecular potential

Fluid properties near rough surfaces are crucial in describing fundamental surface phenomena and modern industrial material design implementations. One of the most powerful approaches to model real rough materials is based on the surface representation in terms of random geometry. Understanding the influence of random solid geometry on the low-temperature fluid thermodynamics is a cutting-edge problem. Therefore, this work extends recent studies bypassing high-temperature expansion and small heterogeneity scale. We introduce random branching trees whose topology reflects the hierarchical properties of a random solid geometry. This mathematical representation allows us to obtain averaged free energy using a statistical model of virtual clusters interacting through random ultrametric pairwise potentials. Our results demonstrate that a significant impact to fluid-solid interface energy is induced by the hierarchical structure of random geometry at low temperature. These calculations coincide with direct Monte Carlo simulations. Due to the study's interdisciplinary nature, the developed approach can be applied to a wide range of quenched disorder systems on random graphs.

Multicritical points and topology-induced inverse transition in the random-field Blume-Capel model in a random network

The interplay between quenched disorder provided by a random field (RF) and network connectivity in the Blume-Capel (BC) model is the subject of this paper. The replica method is used to average over the network randomness. It offers an alternative analytic route to both numerical simulations and standard mean field approaches. The results reveal a rich thermodynamic scenario with multicritical points that are strongly dependent on network connectivity. In addition, we also demonstrate that the RF has a deep effect on the inverse melting transition. This highly nontrivial type of phase transition has been proposed to exist in the BC model as a function of network topology. Our results confirm that the topological mechanism can lead to an inverse melting transition. Nevertheless, our results also show that as the RF becomes stronger, the paramagnetic phase is affected in such way that the topological mechanism for inverse melting is disabled.

Statistical mechanical analysis of linear programming relaxation for combinatorial optimization problems

Typical behavior of the linear programming (LP) problem is studied as a relaxation of the minimum vertex cover (min-VC), a type of integer programming (IP) problem. A lattice-gas model on the Erdös-Rényi random graphs of α-uniform hyperedges is proposed to express both the LP and IP problems of the min-VC in the common statistical mechanical model with a one-parameter family. Statistical mechanical analyses reveal for α=2 that the LP optimal solution is typically equal to that given by the IP below the critical average degree c=e in the thermodynamic limit. The critical threshold for good accuracy of the relaxation extends the mathematical result c=1 and coincides with the replica symmetry-breaking threshold of the IP. The LP relaxation for the minimum hitting sets with α≥3, minimum vertex covers on α-uniform random graphs, is also studied. Analytic and numerical results strongly suggest that the LP relaxation fails to estimate optimal values above the critical average degree c=e/(α-1) where the replica symmetry is broken.

Inverse transitions in a spin-glass model on a scale-free network

In this paper, we will investigate critical phenomena by considering a model spin glass on scale-free networks. For this purpose, we consider the Ghatak-Sherrington (GS) model, a spin-1 spin-glass model with a crystal field, instead of the usual Ising-type model. Scale-free networks on which the GS model is placed are constructed from the static model, in which the number of vertices is fixed from the beginning. On the basis of the replica-symmetric solution, we obtain the analytical solutions, i.e., free energy and order parameters, and we derive the various phase diagrams consisting of the paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and spin-glass phases as functions of temperature T, the degree exponent λ, the mean degree K, and the fraction of the ferromagnetic interactions ρ. Since the present model is based on the GS model, which considers the three states (S = 0, ± 1), the S = 0 state plays a crucial role in the λ-dependent critical behavior: glass transition temperature T(g) has a finite value, even when 2 < λ < 3. In addition, when the crystal field becomes nonzero, the present model clearly exhibits three types of inverse transitions, which occur when an ordered phase is more entropic than a disordered one.

Inverse melting and inverse freezing in a three-state spin-glass model with finite connectivity

The phase diagrams of the three-state Ghatak-Sherrington spin-glass (or random Blume-Capel) model are obtained in mean-field theory with replica symmetry in order to study the effects of a ferromagnetic bias and finite random connectivity in which each spin is connected to a finite number of other spins. It is shown that inverse melting from a ferromagnetic to a low-temperature paramagnetic phase may appear for small but finite disorder and that inverse freezing appears for large disorder. There can also be a continuous inverse ferromagnetic to spin-glass transition.
