Speed Limit for a Highly Irreversible Process and Tight Finite-Time Landauer's Bound

Landauer's bound is the minimum thermodynamic cost for erasing one bit of information. As this bound is achievable only for quasistatic processes, finite-time operation incurs additional energetic costs. We find a tight finite-time Landauer's bound by establishing a general form of the classical speed limit. This tight bound well captures the divergent behavior associated with the additional cost of a highly irreversible process, which scales differently from a nearly irreversible process. We also find an optimal dynamics which saturates the equality of the bound. We demonstrate the validity of this bound via discrete one-bit and coarse-grained bit systems. Our Letter implies that more heat dissipation than expected occurs during high-speed irreversible computation.

Symmetry-induced fluctuation relations for dynamical observables irrespective of their behavior under time reversal

We extend previous work to describe a class of fluctuation relations (FRs) that emerge as a consequence of symmetries at the level of stochastic trajectories in Markov chains. We prove that given such a symmetry, and for a suitable dynamical observable, it is always possible to obtain a FR under a biased dynamics corresponding to the so-called generalized Doob transform. The general transformations of the dynamics that we consider go beyond time-reversal or spatial isometries, and an implication is the existence of FRs for observables irrespective of their behavior under time reversal, for example for time-symmetric observables rather than currents. We further show how to deduce in the long-time limit these FRs from the symmetry properties of the generator of the dynamics. We illustrate our results with four examples that highlight the novel features of our work.

Symmetry and its breaking in a path-integral approach to quantum Brownian motion

We study the Caldeira-Leggett model where a quantum Brownian particle interacts with an environment or a bath consisting of a collection of harmonic oscillators in the path-integral formalism. Compared to the contours that the paths take in the conventional Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, the paths in our study are deformed in the complex time plane as suggested by the recent study by C. Aron, G. Biroli, and L. F. Cugliandolo [SciPost Phys. 4, 008 (2018)10.21468/SciPostPhys.4.1.008]. This is done to investigate the connection between the symmetry properties in the Schwinger-Keldysh action and the equilibrium or nonequilibrium nature of the dynamics in an open quantum system. We derive the influence functional explicitly in this setting, which captures the effect of the coupling to the bath. We show that in equilibrium the action and the influence functional are invariant under a set of transformations of path-integral variables. The fluctuation-dissipation relation is obtained as a consequence of this symmetry. When the system is driven by an external time-dependent protocol, the symmetry is broken. From the terms that break the symmetry, we derive a quantum Jarzynski-like equality for a quantum mechanical worklike quantity given as a function of fluctuating quantum trajectory. In the classical limit, the transformations becomes those used in the functional integral formalism of the classical stochastic thermodynamics to derive the classical fluctuation theorem.

Detailed Fluctuation Theorems: A Unifying Perspective

We present a general method to identify an arbitrary number of fluctuating quantities which satisfy a detailed fluctuation theorem for all times within the framework of time-inhomogeneous Markovian jump processes. In doing so, we provide a unified perspective on many fluctuation theorems derived in the literature. By complementing the stochastic dynamics with a thermodynamic structure (i.e., using stochastic thermodynamics), we also express these fluctuating quantities in terms of physical observables.

Liquid-Gas Transitions in Steady Heat Conduction

We study liquid-gas transitions of heat conduction systems in contact with two heat baths under constant pressure in the linear response regime. On the basis of local equilibrium thermodynamics, we propose an equality with a global temperature, which determines the volume near the equilibrium liquid-gas transition. We find that the formation of the liquid-gas interface is accompanied by a discontinuous change in the volume when increasing the mean temperature of the baths. A supercooled gas near the interface is observed as a stable steady state.

Fluctuation theorems and entropy production with odd-parity variables

We show that the total entropy production in stochastic processes with odd-parity variables (under time reversal) is separated into three parts, only two of which satisfy the integral fluctuation theorems in general. One is the usual excess contribution that can appear only transiently and is called nonadiabatic. Another one is attributed solely to the breakage of detailed balance. The last part that does not satisfy the fluctuation theorem comes from the steady-state distribution asymmetry for odd-parity variables that is activated in a nontransient manner. The latter two parts combine together as the housekeeping (adiabatic) contribution, whose positivity is not guaranteed except when the excess contribution completely vanishes. Our finding reveals that the equilibrium requires the steady-state distribution symmetry for odd-parity variables independently, in addition to the usual detailed balance.

Stochastic thermodynamics, fluctuation theorems and molecular machines

Stochastic thermodynamics as reviewed here systematically provides a framework for extending the notions of classical thermodynamics such as work, heat and entropy production to the level of individual trajectories of well-defined non-equilibrium ensembles. It applies whenever a non-equilibrium process is still coupled to one (or several) heat bath(s) of constant temperature. Paradigmatic systems are single colloidal particles in time-dependent laser traps, polymers in external flow, enzymes and molecular motors in single molecule assays, small biochemical networks and thermoelectric devices involving single electron transport. For such systems, a first-law like energy balance can be identified along fluctuating trajectories. For a basic Markovian dynamics implemented either on the continuum level with Langevin equations or on a discrete set of states as a master equation, thermodynamic consistency imposes a local-detailed balance constraint on noise and rates, respectively. Various integral and detailed fluctuation theorems, which are derived here in a unifying approach from one master theorem, constrain the probability distributions for work, heat and entropy production depending on the nature of the system and the choice of non-equilibrium conditions. For non-equilibrium steady states, particularly strong results hold like a generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem involving entropy production. Ramifications and applications of these concepts include optimal driving between specified states in finite time, the role of measurement-based feedback processes and the relation between dissipation and irreversibility. Efficiency and, in particular, efficiency at maximum power can be discussed systematically beyond the linear response regime for two classes of molecular machines, isothermal ones such as molecular motors, and heat engines such as thermoelectric devices, using a common framework based on a cycle decomposition of entropy production.

Fluctuation theorems and inequalities generalizing the second law of thermodynamics out of equilibrium

We present a general framework for systems which are prepared in a nonstationary nonequilibrium state in the absence of any perturbation and which are then further driven through the application of a time-dependent perturbation. By assumption, the evolution of the system must be described by Markovian dynamics. We distinguish two different situations depending on the way the nonequilibrium state is prepared; either it is created by some driving or it results from a relaxation following some initial nonstationary conditions. Our approach is based on a recent generalization of the Hatano-Sasa relation for nonstationary probability distributions. We also investigate whether a form of the second law holds for separate parts of the entropy production and for any nonstationary reference process, a question motivated by the work of M. Esposito et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 090601 (2010)]. We find that although the special structure of the theorems derived in this reference is not recovered in the general case, detailed fluctuation theorems still hold separately for parts of the entropy production. These detailed fluctuation theorems contain interesting generalizations of the second law of thermodynamics for nonequilibrium systems.

Nonadiabatic entropy production for non-Markov dynamics

We extend the definition of nonadiabatic entropy production given for Markovian systems by Esposito and Van den Broeck [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 090601 (2010)], to arbitrary non-Markov ergodic dynamics. We also introduce a notion of stability characterizing non-Markovianity. For stable non-Markovian systems, the nonadiabatic entropy production satisfies an integral fluctuation theorem, leading to the second law of thermodynamics for transitions between nonequilibrium steady states. This quantity can also be written as a sum of products of generalized fluxes and forces, thus being suitable for thermodynamics. On the other hand, the generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation also holds, clarifying that the conditions for it to be satisfied are ergodicity and stability instead of Markovianity. We show that in spite of being counterintuitive, the stability criterion introduced in this work may be violated in non-Markovian systems even if they are ergodic, leading to a violation of the fluctuation theorem and the generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation. Stability represents then a necessary condition for the above properties to hold and explains why the generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation has remained elusive in the study of non-Markov systems exhibiting nonequilibrium steady states.
