Phase separation of binary mixtures in thin films: Effects of an initial concentration gradient across the film

Computer Simulation of Anisotropic Polymeric Materials Using Polymerization-Induced Phase Separation under Combined Temperature and Concentration Gradients

In this study, the self-condensation polymerization of a tri-functional monomer in a monomer-solvent mixture and the phase separation of the system were simultaneously modeled and simulated. Nonlinear Cahn–Hilliard and Flory–Huggins free energy theories incorporated with the kinetics of the polymerization reaction were utilized to develop the model. Linear temperature and concentration gradients singly and in combination were applied to the system. Eight cases which faced different ranges of initial concentration and/or temperature gradients in different directions, were studied. Various anisotropic structural morphologies were achieved. The numerical results were in good agreement with published data. The size analysis and structural characterization of the phase-separated system were also carried out using digital imaging software. The results showed that the phase separation occurred earlier in the section with a higher initial concentration and/or temperature, and, at a given time, the average equivalent diameter of the droplets <d_ave> was larger in this region. While smaller droplets formed later in the lower concentration/temperature regions, at the higher concentration/temperature side, the droplets went through phase separation longer, allowing them to reach the late stage of the phase separation where particles coarsened. In the intermediate stage of phase separation, <d_ave> was found proportional to t*α, where α was in the range between 13 and 12 for the cases studied and was consistent with published results.

Organosilane Chemical Gradients: Progress, Properties, and Promise

Chemical gradients play an important role in nature, driving many different phenomena critical to life, including the transport of chemical species across membranes and the transport, attachment, and assembly of cells. Taking a cue from these natural processes, scientists and engineers are now working to develop synthetic chemical gradients for use in a broad range of applications, such as in high-throughput investigations of surface properties, as means to guide the motions and/or assembly of liquid droplets, vesicles, nanoparticles, and cells and as new media for stationary-phase-gradient chemical separations. Our groups have been working to develop new methods for preparing chemical gradients from organoalkoxysilane and organochlorosilane precursors and to obtain a better understanding of their properties on macroscopic to microscopic length scales. This review highlights our recent work on the development of controlled-rate infusion and infusion-withdrawal dip-coating methods for the preparation of gradients on planar glass and silicon substrates, on thin-layer chromatography plates, and in capillaries and monoliths for liquid chromatography. We also cover the new knowledge gained from the characterization of our gradients using sessile drop and Wilhelmy plate dynamic water contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy mapping, and single-molecule tracking and spectroscopy. Our studies reveal important evidence of phase separation and cooperative interactions occurring along multicomponent gradients. Emerging concepts and new directions in the preparation and characterization of organosilane-based chemical gradients are also discussed.

Pattern formation in thin films of polymer solutions: Theory and simulations

Self-assembly has been recognized as an efficient tool for generating a wide range of functional, chemically, or physically textured surfaces for applications in small scale devices. In this work, we investigate the stability of thin films of polymer solutions. For low concentrations of polymer in the solution, long length scale dewetting patterns are obtained with wavelength approximately few microns. Whereas, for concentrations above a critical value, bimodal dispersion curves are obtained with the dominant wavelength being up to two orders smaller than the usual dewetting length scale. We further show that the short wavelength corresponds to the phase separation in the film resulting in uniformly distributed high and low concentration regions. Interestingly, due to the solvent entropy, at very high concentration values of polymer, a re-entrant behaviour is observed with the dominant length scale now again corresponding to the dewetting wavelength. Thus, we show that the binary films of polymer solutions provide additional control parameters that can be utilized for generating functional textured surfaces for various applications.

Template-particle stabilized bicontinuous emulsion yielding controlled assembly of hierarchical high-flux filtration membranes

A novel solvent-evaporation-based process that exploits template-particle stabilized bicontinuous emulsions for the formation of previously unreached membrane morphologies is reported in this article. Porous membranes have a wide range of applications spanning from water filtration, pharmaceutical purification, and battery separators to scaffolds for tissue engineering. Different situations require different membrane morphologies including various pore sizes and pore gradients. However, most of the previously reported membrane preparation procedures are restricted to specific morphologies and morphology alterations require an extensive optimization process. The tertiary system presented in this article, which consists of a poly(ether sulfone)/dimethylacetamide (PES/DMAc) solution, glycerol, and ZnO-nanoparticles, allows simple and exact tuning of pore diameters ranging from sub-20 nm, up to 100 nm. At the same time, the pore size gradient is controlled from 0 up to 840%/μm yielding extreme asymmetry. In addition to structural analysis, water flux rates of over 5600 L m(-2) h(-1) are measured for membranes retaining 45 nm silica beads.

Hydrodynamic mechanisms of spinodal decomposition in confined colloid-polymer mixtures: a multiparticle collision dynamics study

A multiscale model for a colloid-polymer mixture is developed. The colloids are described as point particles interacting with each other and with the polymers with strongly repulsive potentials, while polymers interact with each other with a softer potential. The fluid in the suspension is taken into account by the multiparticle collision dynamics method (MPC). Considering a slit geometry where the suspension is confined between parallel repulsive walls, different possibilities for the hydrodynamic boundary conditions (b.c.) at the walls (slip versus stick) are treated. Quenching experiments are considered, where the system volume is suddenly reduced (keeping the density of the solvent fluid constant, while the colloid and polymer particle numbers are kept constant) and thus an initially homogeneous system is quenched deeply into the miscibility gap, where it is unstable. For various relative concentrations of colloids and polymers, the time evolution of the growing colloid-rich and polymer-rich domains are studied by molecular dynamics simulation, taking hydrodynamic effects mediated by the solvent into account via MPC. It is found that the domain size [script-l](d)(t) grows with time t as [script-l](d)(t) [proportionality] t(1/3) for stick and (at late stages) as [script-l](d)(t) [proportionality] t(2/3) for slip b.c., while break-up of percolating structures can cause a transient "arrest" of growth. While these findings apply for films that are 5-10 colloid diameters wide, for ultrathin films (1.5 colloid diameters wide) a regime with [script-l](d)(t) [proportionality] t(1/2) is also identified for rather shallow quenches.

Formation of metastable structures by phase separation triggered by initial composition gradients in thin films

Phase separation kinetics of a binary (A,B) mixture contained in a thin film of thickness D induced by a quench from the one-phase region into the miscibility gap is studied by simulations using a Cahn-Hilliard-Cook model. The initial randomly mixed state (50% A, 50% B) contains a concentration gradient perpendicular to the film, while the surfaces of the film are "neutral" (no preference for either A or B). In thermal equilibrium, a pattern of large A-rich and B-rich domains must result, separated by domain walls oriented perpendicularly to the external surfaces of the thin film. However, it is shown that for many choices of D and the strength of the initial gradient Ψ(g), instead a very long-lived metastable layered structure forms, with two domains separated by a single interface parallel to the external walls. The transient time evolution that leads to this structure is interpreted in terms of a competition between domain growth in the bulk and surface-directed spinodal decomposition caused by the gradient during the initial stages. A surprising and potentially useful finding is that a moderate concentration gradient perpendicular to the film does not favor the layered structure but facilitates the approach toward the true equilibrium with just two domain walls perpendicular to the film. This mechanism may have useful applications in producing layered materials.
