Breaking of upper hybrid oscillations in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field

Mode conversion and laser energy absorption by plasma under an inhomogeneous external magnetic field

The interaction of a high-frequency laser with plasma in the presence of an inhomogeneous external magnetic field has been studied here with the help of particle-in-cell simulations. It has been shown that the laser enters the plasma as an extraordinary wave (X-wave), where the electric field of the wave oscillates perpendicular to both the external magnetic field and propagation direction and as it travels through the plasma, its dispersion property changes due to the inhomogeneity of the externally applied magnetic field. Our study shows that the X-wave's electromagnetic energy is converted to an electrostatic mode as it encounters the upper-hybrid (UH) resonance layer. In the later stage of the evolution, this electrostatic wave breaks and converts its energy to electron kinetic energy. Our study reveals two additional processes involved in decay of the electrostatic mode at the UH resonance layer. We have shown that the energy of the electrostatic mode at the upper-hybrid resonance layer also converts to a low-frequency lower-hybrid mode and high-frequency electromagnetic harmonic radiations. The dependence of energy conversion processes on the gradient of the external magnetic field has also been studied and analyzed.

Electrostatic wave breaking limit in a cold electronegative plasma with non-Maxwellian electrons

A one-dimensional multifluid hydrodynamic model has been adopted as basis for an investigation of the role of suprathermal electrons on the wave breaking amplitude limit for electrostatic excitations propagating in an electronegative plasma. A three-component plasma is considered, consisting of two inertial cold ion populations of opposite signs, evolving against a uniform background of (non-Maxwellian) electrons. A kappa-type (non-Maxwellian) distribution function is adopted for the electrons. By employing a traveling wave approximation, the first integral for the fluid-dynamical system has been derived, in the form of a pseudo-energy balance equation, and analyzed. The effect of intrinsic plasma parameters (namely the ion density ratio, the ion mass ratio, and the superthermal index of the nonthermal electrons) on the wave breaking amplitude limit is explored, by analyzing the phase space topology of the associated pseudopotential function. Our results are relevant to particle acceleration in Space environments and to recent experiments based on plasma-based accelerator schemes, where the simultaneous presence of negative ions and nonthermal electrons may be observed.

Wave-breaking phenomena in a relativistic magnetized plasma

We study the wave-breaking phenomenon of relativistic upper-hybrid (UH) oscillations in a cold magnetoplasma. For our purposes, we use the electron continuity and relativistic electron momentum equations, together with Maxwell's equations, as well as introduce Lagrangian coordinates to obtain an exact nonstationary solution of the governing nonlinear equations. It is found that bursts in the electron density appear in a finite time as a result of relativistic electron mass variations in the UH electric field, indicating a phase mixing or breaking of relativistic UH oscillations. We highlight the relevance of our investigation of the UH wave phase-mixing or UH wave-breaking process to electron energization and plasma particle heating.
