Two- and three-dimensional standing waves in a reaction-diffusion system

Three-dimensional convection-driven fronts of the exothermic chlorite-tetrathionate reaction

Horizontally propagating autocatalytic reaction fronts in fluids are often accompanied by convective motion in the presence of gravity. We experimentally and numerically investigate the stable complex three-dimensional pattern arising in the exothermic chlorite-tetrathionate reaction as a result of the antagonistic thermal and solutal contribution to the density change. By particle image velocimetry measurements, we construct the flow field that stabilizes the front structure. The calculations applied for incompressible fluids using the empirical rate-law model reproduce the experimental observations with good agreement.

Coupled chemical oscillators and emergent system properties

We review recent work on a variety of systems, from the nanometre to the centimetre scale, including microemulsions, microfluidic droplet arrays, gels and flow reactors, in which chemical oscillators interact to generate novel spatiotemporal patterns and/or mechanical motion.

Cross-diffusion in the two-variable Oregonator model

We explore the effect of cross-diffusion on pattern formation in the two-variable Oregonator model of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. For high negative cross-diffusion of the activator (the activator being attracted towards regions of increased inhibitor concentration) we find, depending on the values of the parameters, Turing patterns, standing waves, oscillatory Turing patterns, and quasi-standing waves. For the inhibitor, we find that positive cross-diffusion (the inhibitor being repelled by increasing concentrations of the activator) can induce Turing patterns, jumping waves and spatially modulated bulk oscillations. We qualitatively explain the formation of these patterns. With one model we can explain Turing patterns, standing waves and jumping waves, which previously was done with three different models.
