Mode-distribution analysis of quasielastic neutron scattering and application to liquid water

Detailed dynamical features of the slow hydration water in the vicinity of poly(ethylene oxide) chains

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is a well-known biocompatible polymer and has widely been used for medical applications. Recently, we have investigated the dynamic behavior of hydration water in the vicinity of PEO chains at physiological temperature and shown the presence of slow water with diffusion coefficient one order of magnitude less than that of bulk water. This could be evidence for the intermediate water that is critical for biocompatibility; however, its detailed dynamical features were not established. In this article, we analyze the quasi-elastic neutron scattering from hydration water through mode distribution analysis and present a microscopic picture of hydration water as well as its relation to cold crystallization.

Atomic Structure and Dynamics of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Formamidinium Lead Iodide

The atomic dynamic behaviors of formamidinium lead iodide [HC(NH2)2PbI3] are critical for understanding and improving photovoltaic performances. However, they remain unclear. Here, we investigate the structural phase transitions and the reorientation dynamics of the formamidinium cation [HC(NH2)2+, FA+] of FAPbI3 using neutron scattering techniques. Two structural phase transitions occur with decreasing temperature, from cubic to tetragonal phase at 285 K and then to another tetragonal at 140 K, accompanied by gradually frozen reorientation of FA cations. The nearly isotropic reorientation in the cubic phase is suppressed to reorientation motions involving a two-fold (C2) rotation along the N···N axis and a four-fold (C4) rotation along the C-H axis in the tetragonal phase, and eventually to local disordered motion as a partial C4 along the C-H axis in another tetragonal phase, thereby indicating an intimate interplay between lattice and orientation degrees of freedom in the hybrid perovskite materials. The present complete atomic structure and dynamics provide a solid standing point to understand and then improve photovoltaic properties of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites in the future.

Anomalous behavior of liquid molecules near solid nanoparticles: Novel interpretation on thermal conductivity enhancement in nanofluids

HYPOTHESIS

Recently, it has been reported that anomalous improvement in the thermal conductivity of nanofluid composed of base liquids and dispersed solid nanoparticles, compared to the theoretically predicted value calculated from the particle fraction. Generally, the thermal conductivity values of gases and liquids are dominated by the mean free path of the molecules during translational motion. Herein, we present solid evidence showing the possible contribution of the vibrational behavior of liquid molecules around nanoparticles to increasing these thermal conductivities.

EXPERIMENTS

The behavior of liquid molecules in nanofluids containing SiO₂ particles larger than 100 nm, which were dispersed in a 50 wt% aqueous solution of ethylene glycol, was investigated by means of small-angle neutron scattering, quasi-elastic neutron scattering, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and Raman spectroscopy.

FINDINGS

The vibrational changes in the liquid molecules caused by the interactions between the nanoparticles and liquid molecules surrounding the nanoparticles contributed majorly to the increase in the thermal conductivity values of the SiO₂ nanofluids. Because the vibration of liquid molecules is equivalent to phonon conduction in solids, the increase in thermal conductivity of the suspension due to the presence of nanoparticles was inferred to be derived from the limitation of the translational diffusion, which induces a solid-like behavior in the liquid.

Collective dynamics and self-motions in the van der Waals liquid tetrahydrofuran from meso- to inter-molecular scales disentangled by neutron spectroscopy with polarization analysis

By using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy with polarization analysis, we have separated coherent and incoherent contributions to the scattering of deuterated tetrahydrofuran in a wide scattering vector (Q)-range from meso- to inter-molecular length scales. The results are compared with those recently reported for water to address the influence of the nature of inter-molecular interactions (van der Waals vs hydrogen bond) on the dynamics. The phenomenology found is qualitatively similar in both systems. Both collective and self-scattering functions are satisfactorily described in terms of a convolution model that considers vibrations, diffusion, and a Q-independent mode. We observe a crossover in the structural relaxation from being dominated by the Q-independent mode at the mesoscale to being dominated by diffusion at inter-molecular length scales. The characteristic time of the Q-independent mode is the same for collective and self-motions and, contrary to water, faster and with a lower activation energy (≈1.4 Kcal/mol) than the structural relaxation time at inter-molecular length scales. This follows the macroscopic viscosity behavior. The collective diffusive time is well described by the de Gennes narrowing relation proposed for simple monoatomic liquids in a wide Q-range entering the intermediate length scales, in contraposition to the case of water.

Possible options for efficient wide-band polychromatic measurements using chopper spectrometers at pulsed sources

The polychromatic incident energy measurements using chopper spectrometers at pulsed sources enables us to measure dynamics with different energy resolutions, i.e., different time-windows with a single-measurement. By increasing the possible time-window for a single-measurement, the efficiency and usefulness of such measurements is enhanced. This is achieved by allowing the crossing of trajectories of different Eis from different source pulses on the time-of-flight diagram (the interveined trajectory). We will present an actual case of the interveined trajectory on AMATERAS, a cold-neutron chopper spectrometer installed at J-PARC, together with our experience. Some of our attempts to formulate the conditions for performing polychromatic Ei measurements employing interveined trajectories are discussed. These which can be applied to existing spectrometers, and considered as design criteria for future chopper spectrometers. Further related plan of AMATERAS to improve measuring efficiency is also mentioned.

Model-free description of polymer-coated gold nanoparticle dynamics in aqueous solutions obtained by Bayesian analysis of neutron spin echo data

We present a neutron spin echo study of the nanosecond dynamics of polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalized nanosized gold particles dissolved in D_{2}O at two temperatures and two different PEG molecular weights (400D and 2000D). The analysis of the neutron spin echo data was performed by applying a Bayesian approach to the description of time correlation function decays in terms of exponential terms, recently proved to be theoretically rigorous. This approach, which addresses in a direct way the fundamental issue of model choice in any dynamical analysis, provides here a guide to the most statistically supported way to follow the decay of the intermediate scattering functions I(Q,t) by basing on statistical grounds the choice of the number of terms required for the description of the nanosecond dynamics of the studied systems. Then, the presented analysis avoids from the start resorting to a preselected framework and can be considered as model free. By comparing the results of PEG-coated nanoparticles with those obtained in PEG2000 solutions, we were able to disentangle the translational diffusion of the nanoparticles from the internal dynamics of the polymer grafted to them, and to show that the polymer corona relaxation follows a pure exponential decay in agreement with the behavior predicted by coarse grained molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical models. This methodology has one further advantage: in the presence of a complex dynamical scenario, I(Q,t) is often described in terms of the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function that can implicitly represent a distribution of relaxation times. By choosing to describe the I(Q,t) as a sum of exponential functions and with the support of the Bayesian approach, we can explicitly determine when a finer-structure analysis of the dynamical complexity of the system exists according to the available data without the risk of overparametrization. The approach presented here is an effective tool that can be used in general to provide an unbiased interpretation of neutron spin echo data or whenever spectroscopy techniques yield time relaxation data curves.

Investigation of the dynamics of aqueous proline solutions using neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations

We applied quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) techniques to samples with two different contrasts (deuterated solute/hydrogenated solvent and the opposite label) to selectively study the component dynamics of proline/water solutions. Results on diluted and concentrated solutions (31 and 6 water molecules/proline molecule, respectively) were analyzed in terms of the susceptibility and considering a recently proposed model for water dynamics [Arbe et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2016, 117, 185501] which includes vibrations and the convolution of localized motions and diffusion. We found that proline molecules not only reduce the average diffusion coefficient of water but also extend the time/frequency range of the crossover region ('cage') between the vibrations and purely diffusive behavior. For the high proline concentration we also found experimental evidence of water heterogeneous dynamics and a distribution of diffusion coefficients. Complementary molecular dynamics simulations show that water molecules start to perform rotational diffusion when they escape the cage regime but before the purely diffusive behavior is established. The rotational diffusion regime is also retarded by the presence of proline molecules. On the other hand, a strong coupling between proline and water diffusive dynamics which persists with decreasing temperature is directly observed using QENS. Not only are the temperature dependences of the diffusion coefficients of both components the same, but their absolute values also approach each other with increasing proline concentration. We compared our results with those reported using other techniques, in particular using dielectric spectroscopy (DS). A simple approach based on molecular hydrodynamics and a molecular treatment of DS allows rationalizing the a priori puzzling inconsistency between QENS and dielectric results regarding the dynamic coupling of the two components. The interpretation proposed is based on general grounds and therefore should be applicable to other biomolecular solutions.

Inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering spectrometers in J-PARC

J-PARC, Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex provides short pulse proton beam at a repetition rate 25Hz and the maximum power is expected to be 1MW. Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments have already been operated or under construction/commissioning. There are 6 inelastic/quasi-elastic neutron scattering spectrometers and the complementary use of these spectrometers will open new insight for life science. A robust comparison of dynamical scenarios in a glass-forming liquid
