Adaptive behaviour and learning in slime moulds: the role of oscillations

The slime mould Physarum polycephalum, an aneural organism, uses information from previous experiences to adjust its behaviour, but the mechanisms by which this is accomplished remain unknown. This article examines the possible role of oscillations in learning and memory in slime moulds. Slime moulds share surprising similarities with the network of synaptic connections in animal brains. First, their topology derives from a network of interconnected, vein-like tubes in which signalling molecules are transported. Second, network motility, which generates slime mould behaviour, is driven by distinct oscillations that organize into spatio-temporal wave patterns. Likewise, neural activity in the brain is organized in a variety of oscillations characterized by different frequencies. Interestingly, the oscillating networks of slime moulds are not precursors of nervous systems but, rather, an alternative architecture. Here, we argue that comparable information-processing operations can be realized on different architectures sharing similar oscillatory properties. After describing learning abilities and oscillatory activities of P. polycephalum, we explore the relation between network oscillations and learning, and evaluate the organism's global architecture with respect to information-processing potential. We hypothesize that, as in the brain, modulation of spontaneous oscillations may sustain learning in slime mould. Transition to synchronization in heterogeneous inhibitory neural networks with structured synapses

Inhibitory neurons form an extensive network involved in the development of different rhythms in the cerebral cortex. A transition from an incoherent state, where all inhibitory neurons fire unrelated to each other, to a synchronized or locked state, where all or most neurons define a tight firing pattern, is maybe the most salient process to analyze when considering neuronal rhythms. In this work, we analyzed whether different patterns of effective synaptic connectivity may support a first-order-like transition in this path to synchronization. Such an "explosive" phenomenon may be relevant in neural processes, as normal cognitive processing in different tasks and some neurological disorders manifest an increased power in many neuronal rhythms, supported by an extended concerted spiking activity and an abrupt change to this state. Furthermore, we built an adaptive mechanism that supports the generation of this kind of network, which rapidly creates the underlying structure based on the ongoing firing statistics.

Directed adaptation of synchronization levels in oscillator communities

We present an adaptive control scheme that realizes desired dynamics of an oscillator network with a given number of communities by adjusting the coupling weights between oscillators accordingly. The scheme allows, for example, to simultaneously establish different pregiven synchronization levels in the particular communities as well as phase relationships between them. We apply the method in numerical simulations with all-to-all and randomly coupled networks. Moreover, we provide an experimental proof of concept validating our numerical findings in a network of optically coupled photosensitive chemical micro-oscillators.

Noise-induced standing waves in oscillatory systems with time-delayed feedback

In oscillatory reaction-diffusion systems, time-delay feedback can lead to the instability of uniform oscillations with respect to formation of standing waves. Here, we investigate how the presence of additive, Gaussian white noise can induce the appearance of standing waves. Combining analytical solutions of the model with spatiotemporal simulations, we find that noise can promote standing waves in regimes where the deterministic uniform oscillatory modes are stabilized. As the deterministic phase boundary is approached, the spatiotemporal correlations become stronger, such that even small noise can induce standing waves in this parameter regime. With larger noise strengths, standing waves could be induced at finite distances from the (deterministic) phase boundary. The overall dynamics is defined through the interplay of noisy forcing with the inherent reaction-diffusion dynamics.
