Work fluctuations for a Brownian particle driven by a correlated external random force

Stationary states of activity-driven harmonic chains

We study the stationary state of a chain of harmonic oscillators driven by two active reservoirs at the two ends. These reservoirs exert correlated stochastic forces on the boundary oscillators which eventually leads to a nonequilibrium stationary state of the system. We consider three most well-known dynamics for the active force, namely, the active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, run-and-tumble process, and active Brownian process, all of which have exponentially decaying two-point temporal correlations but very different higher-order fluctuations. We show that, irrespective of the specific dynamics of the drive, the stationary velocity fluctuations are Gaussian in nature with a kinetic temperature which remains uniform in the bulk. Moreover, we find the emergence of an "equipartition of energy" in the bulk of the system-the bulk kinetic temperature equals the bulk potential temperature in the thermodynamic limit. We also calculate the stationary distribution of the instantaneous energy current in the bulk which always shows a logarithmic divergence near the origin and asymmetric exponential tails. The signatures of specific active driving become visible in the behavior of the oscillators near the boundary. This is most prominent for the RTP- and ABP-driven chains where the boundary velocity distributions become non-Gaussian and the current distribution has a finite cutoff.

Heat fluctuations in a harmonic chain of active particles

One of the major challenges in stochastic thermodynamics is to compute the distributions of stochastic observables for small-scale systems for which fluctuations play a significant role. Hitherto much theoretical and experimental research has focused on systems composed of passive Brownian particles. In this paper, we study the heat fluctuations in a system of interacting active particles. Specifically we consider a one-dimensional harmonic chain of N active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles, with the chain ends connected to heat baths of different temperatures. We compute the moment-generating function for the heat flow in the steady state. We employ our general framework to explicitly compute the moment-generating function for two example single-particle systems. Further, we analytically obtain the scaled cumulants for the heat flow for the chain. Numerical Langevin simulations confirm the long-time analytical expressions for first and second cumulants for the heat flow for a two-particle chain.

Stochastic Thermodynamics of a Piezoelectric Energy Harvester Model

We experimentally study a piezoelectric energy harvester driven by broadband random vibrations. We show that a linear model, consisting of an underdamped Langevin equation for the dynamics of the tip mass, electromechanically coupled with a capacitor and a load resistor, can accurately describe the experimental data. In particular, the theoretical model allows us to define fluctuating currents and to study the stochastic thermodynamics of the system, with focus on the distribution of the extracted work over different time intervals. Our analytical and numerical analysis of the linear model is succesfully compared to the experiments.

Stochastic thermodynamics of nonharmonic oscillators in high vacuum

We perform an analytic study on the stochastic thermodynamics of a small classical particle trapped in a time-dependent single-well potential in the highly underdamped limit. It is shown that the nonequilibrium probability density function for the system's energy is a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution (as in equilibrium) with a closed form time-dependent effective temperature and fractional degrees of freedom. We also find that the solvable model satisfies the Crooks fluctuation theorem, as expected. Moreover, we compute the average work in this isothermal process and characterize analytically the optimal protocol for minimum work. The optimal protocol presents an initial and a final jump which correspond to adiabatic processes linked by a smooth exponential time-dependent part for all kinds of single-well potentials. Furthermore, we argue that this result connects two distinct relevant experimental setups for trapped nanoparticles, the levitated particle in a harmonic trap, and the free particle in a box, as they are limiting cases of the general single-well potential and display the time-dependent optimal protocols. Finally, we highlight the connection between our system and an equivalent model of a gas of Brownian particles.

Stochastic efficiency of an isothermal work-to-work converter engine

We investigate the efficiency of an isothermal Brownian work-to-work converter engine, composed of a Brownian particle coupled to a heat bath at a constant temperature. The system is maintained out of equilibrium by using two external time-dependent stochastic Gaussian forces, where one is called load force and the other is called drive force. Work done by these two forces are stochastic quantities. The efficiency of this small engine is defined as the ratio of stochastic work done against load force to stochastic work done by the drive force. The probability density function as well as large deviation function of the stochastic efficiency are studied analytically and verified by numerical simulations.

Integral fluctuation theorems for stochastic resetting systems

We study the stochastic thermodynamics of resetting systems. Violation of microreversibility means that the well-known derivations of fluctuations theorems break down for dynamics with resetting. Despite that we show that stochastic resetting systems satisfy two integral fluctuation theorems. The first is the Hatano-Sasa relation describing the transition between two steady states. The second integral fluctuation theorem involves a functional that includes both dynamical and thermodynamic contributions. We find that the second law-like inequality found by Fuchs et al. for resetting systems [Europhys. Lett. 113, 60009 (2016)EULEEJ0295-507510.1209/0295-5075/113/60009] can be recovered from this integral fluctuation theorem with the help of Jensen's inequality.

Non-Markovian barotropic-type and Hall-type fluctuation relations in crossed electric and magnetic fields

In this paper we derive the non-Markovian barotropic-type and Hall-type fluctuation relations for noninteracting charged Brownian particles embedded in a memory heat bath and under the action of crossed electric and magnetic fields. We first obtain a more general non-Markovian fluctuation relation formulated within the context of a generalized Langevin equation with arbitrary friction memory kernel and under the action of a constant magnetic field and an arbitrary time-dependent electric field. It is shown that this fluctuation relation is related to the total amount of an effective work done on the charged particle as it is driven out of equilibrium by the applied time-dependent electric field. Both non-Markovian barotropic- and Hall-type fluctuation relations are then derived when the electric field is assumed to be also a constant vector pointing along just one axis. In the Markovian limit, we show explicitly that they reduce to the same results reported in the literature.

Non-Markovian work fluctuation theorem in crossed electric and magnetic fields

The validity of the transient work fluctuation theorem for a charged Brownian harmonic oscillator embedded in a non-Markovian heat bath and under the action of crossed electric and magnetic fields is investigated. The aforementioned theorem is verified to be valid within the context of the generalized Langevin equation with an arbitrary memory kernel and arbitrary dragging in the potential minimum. The fluctuation-dissipation relation of the second kind is assumed to be valid and shows that the non-Markovian stochastic dynamics associated with the particle, in the absence of the external time-dependent electric field, reaches an equilibrium state, as is precisely demanded by such a relation. The Jarzynski equality in this problem is also analyzed.
