Computing the Coulomb interaction in inhomogeneous dielectric media via a local electrostatics lattice algorithm

Broken symmetries in quasi-2D charged systems via negative dielectric confinement

We report spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) phenomena in symmetrically charged binary particle systems under planar nanoconfinement with negative dielectric constants. The SSB is triggered solely via the dielectric confinement effect, without any external fields. The mechanism of SSB is found to be caused by the strong polarization field enhanced by nanoconfinement, giving rise to charge/field oscillations in the transverse directions. Interestingly, dielectric contrast can even determine the degree of SSB in transverse and longitudinal dimensions, forming charge-separated interfacial liquids and clusters on square lattices. Furthermore, we analytically show that the formed lattice constant is determined by the dielectric mismatch and the length scale of confinement, which is validated via molecular dynamics simulations. The novel broken symmetry mechanism may provide new insights into the study of quasi-2D systems and the design of future nanodevices.

Explicit characterization of counterion dynamics around a flexible polyelectrolyte

The article presents a comprehensive study of counterion dynamics around a generic linear polyelectrolyte chain with the help of coarse-grained computer simulations. The ion-chain coupling is discussed in the form of binding time, mean-square displacement (MSD) relative to the chain, local ion transport coefficient, and spatiotemporal correlations in the effective charge. We have shown that a counterion exhibits subdiffusive behavior 〈δR^{2}〉∼t^{δ}, δ≈0.9 w.r.t. chain's center of mass. The MSD of ions perpendicularly outward from the chain segment exhibits a smaller subdiffusive exponent compared to the one along the chain backbone. The effective diffusivity of ion is the lowest in chain's close proximity, extending up to the length-scale of radius of gyration R_{g}. Beyond R_{g} at larger distances, they attain diffusivity of free ion with a smooth cross-over from the adsorbed regime to the free ion regime. We have shown that the effective diffusivity drastically decreases for the multivalent ions, while the crossover length scale remains the same. Conversely, with increasing salt concentration the coupling-length scale reduces, while the diffusivity remains unaltered. The effective diffusivity of adsorbed-ion reveals an exponential reduction with electrostatic interaction strength. We further corroborate this from the binding time of ions on the chain, which also grows exponentially with the coupling strength of the ion-polymer duo. Moreover, the binding time of ions exhibits a weak dependence with salt concentration for the monovalent salt, while for multivalent salts the binding time decreases dramatically with concentration. Our work also elucidates fluctuations in the effective charge per site, where it exhibits strong negative correlations at short length-scales.

Electric-field-based Poisson-Boltzmann theory: Treating mobile charge as polarization

Mobile charge in an electrolytic solution can in principle be represented as the divergence of ionic polarization. After adding explicit solvent polarization a finite volume of an electrolyte can then be treated as a composite nonuniform dielectric body. Writing the electrostatic interactions as an integral over electric-field energy density we show that the Poisson-Boltzmann functional in this formulation is convex and can be used to derive the equilibrium equations for electric potential and ion concentration by a variational procedure developed by Ericksen for dielectric continua [J. L. Ericksen, Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 183, 299 (2007)AVRMAW0003-952710.1007/s00205-006-0042-4]. The Maxwell field equations are enforced by extending the set of variational parameters by a vector potential representing the dielectric displacement which is fully transverse in a dielectric system without embedded external charge. The electric-field energy density in this representation is a function of the vector potential and the sum of ionic and solvent polarization making the mutual screening explicit. Transverse polarization is accounted for by construction, lifting the restriction to longitudinal polarization inherent in the electrostatic potential based formulation of Poisson-Boltzmann mean field theory.

Dissipative particle dynamics for systems with polar species: Interactions in dielectric media

In this work, we develop a method for simulating polar species in the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method. The main idea behind the method is to treat each bead as a dumb-bell, i.e., two sub-beads kept at a fixed distance, instead of a point-like particle. The relation between the bead dipole moment and the bulk dielectric permittivity was obtained. The interaction force of single charges in polar liquid showed that the effective dielectric permittivity is somewhat smaller than that obtained for the bulk case at large separation between the charges. In order to understand the reasons behind the observed drop in the dielectric permittivity, we calculate the electric field of an isolated charge in a polar liquid; no permittivity drop is observed for this case. We can assume that the behavior observed for the force is due to the fact that the probing point is always associated with the charged bead, which is a force center, which essentially leads to a non-homogeneous density distribution around it on average; this is not the case when the field is measured. The interaction of a single charge with an interface between two liquids with different permittivities was studied after that; the model is found to correctly reproduce the "mirror image" effects. Finally, we show why it is necessary to treat the polar species in DPD explicitly by investigating the behavior of a charged colloidal particle at a liquid-liquid interface.

Importance of varying permittivity on the conductivity of polyelectrolyte solutions

Dissolved ions can alter the local permittivity of water; nevertheless most theories and simulations ignore this fact. We present a novel algorithm for treating spatial and temporal variations in the permittivity and use it to measure the equivalent conductivity of a salt-free polyelectrolyte solution. Our new approach quantitatively reproduces experimental results unlike simulations with a constant permittivity that even qualitatively fail to describe the data. We can relate this success to a change in the ion distribution close to the polymer due to the buildup of a permittivity gradient.
