Representing stimulus motion with waves in adaptive neural fields

Traveling waves of neural activity emerge in cortical networks both spontaneously and in response to stimuli. The spatiotemporal structure of waves can indicate the information they encode and the physiological processes that sustain them. Here, we investigate the stimulus-response relationships of traveling waves emerging in adaptive neural fields as a model of visual motion processing. Neural field equations model the activity of cortical tissue as a continuum excitable medium, and adaptive processes provide negative feedback, generating localized activity patterns. Synaptic connectivity in our model is described by an integral kernel that weakens dynamically due to activity-dependent synaptic depression, leading to marginally stable traveling fronts (with attenuated backs) or pulses of a fixed speed. Our analysis quantifies how weak stimuli shift the relative position of these waves over time, characterized by a wave response function we obtain perturbatively. Persistent and continuously visible stimuli model moving visual objects. Intermittent flashes that hop across visual space can produce the experience of smooth apparent visual motion. Entrainment of waves to both kinds of moving stimuli are well characterized by our theory and numerical simulations, providing a mechanistic description of the perception of visual motion.

Stochastic synchronization of dynamics on the human connectome

Synchronization is a collective mechanism by which oscillatory networks achieve their functions. Factors driving synchronization include the network's topological and dynamical properties. However, how these factors drive the emergence of synchronization in the presence of potentially disruptive external inputs like stochastic perturbations is not well understood, particularly for real-world systems such as the human brain. Here, we aim to systematically address this problem using a large-scale model of the human brain network (i.e., the human connectome). The results show that the model can produce complex synchronization patterns transitioning between incoherent and coherent states. When nodes in the network are coupled at some critical strength, a counterintuitive phenomenon emerges where the addition of noise increases the synchronization of global and local dynamics, with structural hub nodes benefiting the most. This stochastic synchronization effect is found to be driven by the intrinsic hierarchy of neural timescales of the brain and the heterogeneous complex topology of the connectome. Moreover, the effect coincides with clustering of node phases and node frequencies and strengthening of the functional connectivity of some of the connectome's subnetworks. Overall, the work provides broad theoretical insights into the emergence and mechanisms of stochastic synchronization, highlighting its putative contribution in achieving network integration underpinning brain function.

Optimization of noise-induced synchronization of oscillator networks

We investigate common-noise-induced synchronization between two identical networks of coupled phase oscillators exhibiting fully locked collective oscillations. Using the collective phase description method for fully locked oscillators, we demonstrate that two noninteracting networks of coupled phase oscillators can exhibit in-phase synchronization between the networks when driven by weak common noise. We derive the Lyapunov exponent characterizing the relaxation time for synchronization and develop a method of obtaining the optimal input pattern of common noise to achieve fast synchronization. We illustrate the theory using three representative networks with heterogeneous, global, and local coupling. The theoretical results are validated by direct numerical simulations.

The role of asymmetrical and repulsive coupling in the dynamics of two coupled van der Pol oscillators

A system of two asymmetrically coupled van der Pol oscillators has been studied. We show that the introduction of a small asymmetry in coupling leads to the appearance of a "wideband synchronization channel" in the bifurcational structure of the parameter space. An increase of asymmetry and transition to repulsive interaction leads to the formation of multistability. As the result, the tip of the Arnold's tongue widens due to the formation of folds defined by saddle-node bifurcation curves for the limit cycles on the torus.
