Clustering of self-thermophilic asymmetric dimers: the relevance of hydrodynamics

Self-thermophilic dimers are characterized by a net phoretic attraction which, in combination with hydrodynamic interactions, results in the formation of crystalline-like aggregates. To distinguish the effect of the different contributions is frequently an important challenge. We present a simulation investigation done in parallel in the presence and the absence of hydrodynamic interactions for the case of asymmetric self-thermophoretic dimers. In the absence of hydrodynamics, the clusters have the standard heads-in configurations. In contrast, in the presence of hydrodynamics, clusters with heads-in conformation are being formed, in which dimers with their propulsion velocity pointing out of the cluster are assembled and stabilized by strong hydrodynamic osmotic flows. Significant variation in the material properties is to be expected from such differences in the collective behavior, whose understanding and control is of great relevance for the development of new synthetic active materials.

Self-phoretic Brownian dynamics simulations

A realistic and effective model to simulate phoretic Brownian dynamics swimmers based on the general form of the thermophoretic force is here presented. The collective behavior of self-phoretic dimers is investigated with this model and compared with two simpler versions, allowing the understanding of the subtle interplay of steric interactions, propulsion, and phoretic effects. The phoretic Brownian dynamics method has control parameters which can be tuned to closely map the properties of experiments or simulations with explicit solvent, in particular those performed with multiparticle collision dynamics. The combination of the phoretic Brownian method and multiparticle collision dynamics is a powerful tool to precisely identify the importance of hydrodynamic interactions in systems of self-phoretic swimmers.

Simulating wet active polymers by multiparticle collision dynamics

The conformational and dynamical properties of active Brownian polymers embedded in a fluid depend on the nature of the driving mechanism, e.g., self-propulsion or external actuation of the monomers. Implementations of self-propelled and actuated active Brownian polymers in a multiparticle collision (MPC) dynamics fluid are presented, which capture the distinct differences between the two driving mechanisms. The active force-free nature of self-propelled monomers requires adaptations of the MPC simulation scheme, with its streaming and collision steps, where the monomer self-propulsion velocity has to be omitted in the collision step. Comparison of MPC simulation results for active polymers in dilute solution with results of Brownian dynamics simulations accounting for hydrodynamics via the Rotne-Prager-Yamakawa tensor confirm the suitability of the implementation. The polymer conformational and dynamical properties are analyzed by the static and dynamic structure factor, and the scaling behavior of the latter with respect to the wave number and time dependence are discussed. The dynamic structure factor displays various activity-induced temporal regimes, depending on the considered wave number, which reflect the persistent diffusive motion of the whole polymer at small wave numbers, and the activity-enhanced internal dynamics at large wave numbers. The obtained simulation results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Preference Parameters for the Calculation of Thermal Conductivity by Multiparticle Collision Dynamics

Calculation of the thermal conductivity of nanofluids by molecular dynamics (MD) is very common. Regrettably, general MD can only be employed to simulate small systems due to the huge computation workload. Instead, the computation workload can be considerably reduced due to the coarse-grained fluid when multiparticle collision dynamics (MPCD) is employed. Hence, such a method can be utilized to simulate a larger system. However, the selection of relevant parameters of MPCD noticeably influences the calculation results. To this end, parameterization investigations for various bin sizes, number densities, time-steps, rotation angles and temperatures are carried out, and the influence of these parameters on the calculation of thermal conductivity are analyzed. Finally, the calculations of thermal conductivity for liquid argon, water and Cu-water nanofluid are performed, and the errors compared to the theoretical values are 3.4%, 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively. This proves that the method proposed in the present work for calculating the thermal conductivity of nanofluids is applicable.

Hydrodynamics of immiscible binary fluids with viscosity contrast: a multiparticle collision dynamics approach

We present a multiparticle collision dynamics (MPC) implementation of layered immiscible fluids A and B of different shear viscosities separated by planar interfaces. The simulated flow profile for imposed steady shear motion and the time-dependent shear stress functions are in excellent agreement with our continuum hydrodynamics results for the composite fluid. The wave-vector dependent transverse velocity auto-correlation functions (TVAF) in the bulk-fluid regions of the layers decay exponentially, and agree with those of single-phase isotropic MPC fluids. In addition, we determine the hydrodynamic mobilities of an embedded colloidal sphere moving steadily parallel or transverse to a fluid-fluid interface, as functions of the distance from the interface. The obtained mobilities are in good agreement with hydrodynamic force multipoles calculations, for a no-slip sphere moving under creeping flow conditions near a clean, ideally flat interface. The proposed MPC fluid-layer model can be straightforwardly implemented, and it is computationally very efficient. Yet, owing to the spatial discretization inherent to the MPC method, the model can not reproduce all hydrodynamic features of an ideally flat interface between immiscible fluids.

General isotropic micropolar fluid model in smoothed particle hydrodynamics

The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is used in this paper to model micropolar fluids, with emphasis on their dissipation mechanisms. To this aim, a dissipation function is defined at the particle level which depends on the relative velocity between particles but also on an additional spin degree of freedom, which modifies such relative velocity as well as introduces spin-related intrinsic dissipation mechanisms, comparable to those related to the rate of deformation tensor in Newtonian fluids. This dissipation function is then incorporated within the Lagrangian formalism, leading to a set of SPH particle equations to describe the dynamics. A continuous integral SPH version of the scheme is obtained with a bottom-up derivation which guarantees the consistency of the SPH term. The model is then enriched with two additional terms based exclusively on the spin derivatives, which grant it the maximal generality as an isotropic model for micropolar fluids. Finally, numerical verification and validation tests are documented that show that SPH is capable of accurately modeling this type of dynamics.

Enhanced Rotational Motion of Spherical Squirmer in Polymer Solutions

The rotational diffusive motion of a self-propelled, attractive spherical colloid immersed in a solution of self-avoiding polymers is studied by mesoscale hydrodynamic simulations. A drastic enhancement of the rotational diffusion by more than an order of magnitude in the presence of activity is obtained. The amplification is a consequence of two effects, a decrease of the amount of adsorbed polymers by active motion and an asymmetric encounter with polymers on the squirmer surface, which yields an additional torque and random noise for the rotational motion. Our simulations suggest a way to control the rotational dynamics of squirmer-type microswimmers by the degree of polymer adsorption and system heterogeneity.

Behavior of active filaments near solid-boundary under linear shear flow

The steady-state behavior of a dilute suspension of self-propelled filaments confined between planar walls subjected to Couette-flow is reported herein. The effect of hydrodynamics has been taken into account using a mesoscale simulation approach. We present a detailed analysis of positional and angular probability distributions of filaments with varying propulsive force and shear-flow. The distribution of the centre-of-mass of the filament shows adsorption near the surfaces, which diminishes with the flow. The excess density of filaments decreases with Weissenberg number as Wi-β with an exponent β ≈ 0.8, in the intermediate shear range (1 < Wi < 30). The angular orientational moment also decreases near the wall as Wi-δ with δ ≈ 1/5; the variation in orientational moment near the wall is relatively slower than the bulk. It shows a strong dependence on the propulsive force near the wall, with variation on force as Pe-1/3 for large Pe ≥ 1. The active filament shows orientational preference with flow near the surfaces, which splits into upstream and downstream swimming. The population splitting from a unimodal (propulsive force dominated regime) to bimodal phase (shear dominated regime) is identified in the parameter space of propulsive force and shear flow.

Angular-momentum conservation in discretization of the Navier-Stokes equation for viscous fluids

Although the Navier-Stokes equation (NSE) is derived under angular-momentum conservation (AMC), numerical simulation methods often lack it. Here we reveal that AMC violations result from implementation of the degenerated viscous terms of NSE. To maintain AMC, these degenerated terms must be separately integrated in accordance with their stress origins. As observed in particle-based hydrodynamics methods, the violation causes artificial rotations in multicomponent fluids with different viscosities. At the interface between two fluids or with a mobile solid object, AMC must be satisfied, whereas AMC can be neglected in bulk fluids. We also clarify that the condition for constant fluid rotation as a rigid body in a container rotating at a constant speed is not the AMC of the stresses, but the invariance of the viscous forces under a global rotation. To confirm our theory, we simulated the circular laminar flows of single- and binary-component fluids using two-dimensional Lagrangian finite-volume methods. The results show excellent agreement with the analytical predictions for fluids with and without AMC.

Clustering of microswimmers: interplay of shape and hydrodynamics

The spatiotemporal dynamics in systems of active self-propelled particles is controlled by the propulsion mechanism in combination with various direct interactions, such as steric repulsion and hydrodynamics. These direct interactions are typically anisotropic, and come in different "flavors", such as spherical and elongated particle shapes, pusher and puller flow fields, etc. The combination of the various aspects is expected to lead to new emergent behavior. However, it is a priori not evident whether shape and hydrodynamics act synergistically or antagonistically to generate motility-induced clustering (MIC) and phase separation (MIPS). We employ a model of prolate spheroidal microswimmers-called squirmers-in quasi-two-dimensional confinement to address this issue by mesoscale hydrodynamic simulations. For comparison, non-hydrodynamic active Brownian particles (ABPs) are considered to elucidate the contribution of hydrodynamic interactions. For spherical particles, the comparison between ABPs and hydrodynamic-squirmer ensembles reveals a suppression of MIPS due to hydrodynamic interactions. Yet, our analysis shows that dynamic clusters exist, with a broad size distribution. The fundamental difference between ABPs and squirmers is attributed to an increased reorientation of squirmers by hydrodynamic torques during their collisions. In contrast, for elongated squirmers, hydrodynamics interactions enhance MIPS. The transition to a phase-separated state strongly depends on the nature of the swimmer's flow field-with an increased tendency toward MIPS for pullers, and a reduced tendency for pushers. Thus, hydrodynamic interactions show opposing effects on MIPS for spherical and elongated microswimmers, and details of the propulsion mechanism of biological microswimmers may be very important to determine their collective behavior.

Clustering and dynamics of particles in dispersions with competing interactions: theory and simulation

Dispersions of particles with short-range attractive and long-range repulsive interactions exhibit rich equilibrium microstructures and a complex phase behavior. We present theoretical and simulation results for structural and, in particular, short-time diffusion properties of a colloidal model system with such interactions, both in the dispersed-fluid and equilibrium-cluster phase regions. The particle interactions are described by a generalized Lennard-Jones-Yukawa pair potential. For the theoretical-analytical description, we apply the hybrid Beenakker-Mazur pairwise additivity (BM-PA) scheme. The static structure factor input to this scheme is calculated self-consistently using the Zerah-Hansen integral equation theory approach. In the simulations, a hybrid simulation method is adopted, combing molecular dynamics simulations of colloids with the multiparticle collision dynamics approach for the fluid, which fully captures hydrodynamic interactions. The comparison of our theoretical and simulation results confirms the high accuracy of the BM-PA scheme for dispersed-fluid phase systems. For particle attraction strengths exceeding a critical value, our simulations yield an equilibrium cluster phase. Calculations of the mean lifetime of the appearing clusters and the comparison with the analytical prediction of the dissociation time of an isolated particle pair reveal quantitative differences pointing to the importance of many-particle hydrodynamic interactions for the cluster dynamics. The cluster lifetime in the equilibrium-cluster phase increases far stronger with increasing attraction strength than that in the dispersed-fluid phase. Moreover, significant changes in the cluster shapes are observed in the course of time. Hence, an equilibrium-cluster dispersion cannot be treated dynamically as a system of permanent rigid bodies.

Anisotropic thermophoresis

Colloidal migration in a temperature gradient is referred to as thermophoresis. In contrast to particles with a spherical shape, we show that elongated colloids may have a thermophoretic response that varies with the colloid orientation. Remarkably, this can translate into a non-vanishing thermophoretic force in the direction perpendicular to the temperature gradient. Opposite to the friction force, the thermophoretic force of a rod oriented with the temperature gradient can be larger or smaller than when oriented perpendicular to it. The precise anisotropic thermophoretic behavior clearly depends on the colloidal rod aspect ratio, and also on its surface details, which provides an interesting tunability to the devices constructed based on this principle. By means of mesoscale hydrodynamic simulations, we characterize this effect for different types of rod-like colloids.

Multiparticle collision simulations of two-dimensional one-component plasmas: Anomalous transport and dimensional crossovers

By means of hybrid multiparticle collsion-particle-in-cell (MPC-PIC) simulations we study the dynamical scaling of energy and density correlations at equilibrium in moderately coupled two-dimensional (2D) and quasi-one-dimensional (1D) plasmas. We find that the predictions of nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics for the structure factors of density and energy fluctuations in 1D systems with three global conservation laws hold true also for 2D systems that are more extended along one of the two spatial dimensions. Moreover, from the analysis of the equilibrium energy correlators and density structure factors of both 1D and 2D neutral plasmas, we find that neglecting the contribution of the fluctuations of the vanishing self-consistent electrostatic fields overestimates the interval of frequencies over which the anomalous transport is observed. Such violations of the expected scaling in the currents correlation are found in different regimes, hindering the observation of the asymptotic scaling predicted by the theory.

Mesoscale simulation of phoretically osmotic boundary conditions

Boundary walls can drive the tangential flow of fluids by phoretic osmosis when exposed to a gradient field, including chemical, thermal or electric potential gradient. At the microscale, such boundary driving mechanisms become quite pronounced. Here, we propose a mesoscale strategy to simulate the phoretically osmotic boundaries, in which the microscopic fluid-wall interactions are coarse-grained into the bounce-back or specular reflection, and the phoretically osmotic force is generated by selectively reversing the tangential velocity of specific fluid particles near the boundary wall. With this scheme, the phoretically osmotic boundary can be realized with a minimal modification to the widely used mesoscopic no-slip/slip hydrodynamic boundary condition. Its implementation is quite efficient and the resulting phoretically osmotic flow is flexibly tunable. Its validity is verified by performing extensive mesoscale simulations for both the diffusioosmotic and thermoosmotic boundaries. In particular, we use the proposed scheme to investigate fluid transport driven by the phoretic osmosis in microfluidic systems and the effects of the diffusioosmosis on the dynamics of active catalytic colloidal particles. Our work thus offers new possibilities to study the phoretically osmotic effect in active complex fluids and microfluidic systems by simulation, where the gradient fields are ubiquitous.

Thermoosmotic microfluidics

Microchannels with asymmetrically ratcheted walls are here shown to behave as effective and versatile microfluidic pumps if locally heated. When the boundary walls have different temperatures, the confined liquid experiences a temperature gradient along the sawtooth edges, which can induce a thermoosmotic flow. A mesoscale molecular simulation approach is here employed to investigate the flows which are contrasted using an analytical approach. Microchannels can be composed by one or two ratcheted walls which can be straight or cylindrical. Varying the channel geometry can not only change the overall fluid flux, but also vary the flow patters from shear to capillary type, or even to extensional type flows. This scheme does not require multiphase fluids or any movable channel parts, although they are possible to be implemented. The proposed principle is then very versatile to locally manipulate complex fluids, and a promising tool to recover waste heat, to facilitate cooling of microchips, and to manufacture portable lab-on-a-chip devices.

From local to hydrodynamic friction in Brownian motion: A multiparticle collision dynamics simulation study

The friction and diffusion coefficients of rigid spherical colloidal particles dissolved in a fluid are determined from velocity and force autocorrelation functions by mesoscale hydrodynamic simulations. Colloids with both slip and no-slip boundary conditions are considered, which are embedded in fluids modeled by multiparticle collision dynamics with and without angular momentum conservation. For no-slip boundary conditions, hydrodynamics yields the well-known Stokes law, while for slip boundary conditions the lack of angular momentum conservation leads to a reduction of the hydrodynamic friction coefficient compared to the classical result. The colloid diffusion coefficient is determined by integration of the velocity autocorrelation function, where the numerical result at shorter times is combined with the theoretical hydrodynamic expression for longer times. The suitability of this approach is confirmed by simulations of sedimenting colloids. In general, we find only minor deviations from the Stokes-Einstein relation, which even disappear for larger colloids. Importantly, for colloids with slip boundary conditions, our simulation results contradict the frequently assumed additivity of local and hydrodynamic diffusion coefficients.
