Efficient tool to calculate two-dimensional optical spectra for photoactive molecular complexes

Unraveling quantum coherences mediating primary charge transfer processes in photosystem II reaction center

Photosystem II (PSII) reaction center (RC) is a unique complex that is capable of efficiently separating electronic charges across the membrane. The primary energy- and charge-transfer (CT) processes occur on comparable ultrafast timescales, which makes it extremely challenging to understand the fundamental mechanism responsible for the near-unity quantum efficiency of the transfer. Here, we elucidate the role of quantum coherences in the ultrafast energy and CT in the PSII RC by performing two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy at the cryogenic temperature of 20 kelvin, which captures the distinct underlying quantum coherences. Specifically, we uncover the electronic and vibrational coherences along with their lifetimes during the primary ultrafast processes of energy and CT. We construct an excitonic model that provides evidence for coherent energy and CT at low temperature in the 2D electronic spectra. The principles could provide valuable guidelines for creating artificial photosystems with exploitation of system-bath coupling and control of coherences to optimize the photon conversion efficiency to specific functions.

Transient chiral dynamics revealed by two-dimensional circular dichroism spectroscopy

Chirality has been considered as one of the key factors in the evolution of life in nature. It is important to uncover how chiral potentials of molecular systems play vital role in fundamental photochemical processes. Here, we investigate the role of chirality in photoinduced energy transfer in a model dimeric system, where the monomers are excitonically coupled. To observe transient chiral dynamics and energy transfer, we employ circularly polarized laser pulses in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy to construct the two-dimensional circular dichroism (2DCD) spectral maps. Tracking time-resolved peak magnitudes in 2DCD spectra allows one to identify chirality induced population dynamics. The dynamics of energy transfer is revealed by the time-resolved kinetics of cross peaks. However, the differential signal of 2DCD spectra shows the magnitude of cross peaks is dramatically reduced at initial waiting time, which indicates the weak chiral interactions between two monomers. The downhill energy transfer is resolved by presenting a strong magnitude of cross peak in 2DCD spectra after long waiting time. The chiral contribution towards coherent and incoherent energy-transfer pathways in the model dimer system is further examined via control of excitonic couplings between two monomers. Applications are made to study the energy-transfer process in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex. Our work uncovers the potential of 2DCD spectroscopy to resolve the chiral-induced interactions and population transfers in excitonically coupled systems.

Equation-of-Motion Methods for the Calculation of Femtosecond Time-Resolved 4-Wave-Mixing and N-Wave-Mixing Signals

Femtosecond nonlinear spectroscopy is the main tool for the time-resolved detection of photophysical and photochemical processes. Since most systems of chemical interest are rather complex, theoretical support is indispensable for the extraction of the intrinsic system dynamics from the detected spectroscopic responses. There exist two alternative theoretical formalisms for the calculation of spectroscopic signals, the nonlinear response-function (NRF) approach and the spectroscopic equation-of-motion (EOM) approach. In the NRF formalism, the system-field interaction is assumed to be sufficiently weak and is treated in lowest-order perturbation theory for each laser pulse interacting with the sample. The conceptual alternative to the NRF method is the extraction of the spectroscopic signals from the solutions of quantum mechanical, semiclassical, or quasiclassical EOMs which govern the time evolution of the material system interacting with the radiation field of the laser pulses. The NRF formalism and its applications to a broad range of material systems and spectroscopic signals have been comprehensively reviewed in the literature. This article provides a detailed review of the suite of EOM methods, including applications to 4-wave-mixing and N-wave-mixing signals detected with weak or strong fields. Under certain circumstances, the spectroscopic EOM methods may be more efficient than the NRF method for the computation of various nonlinear spectroscopic signals.

Small Matrix Path Integral for Driven Dissipative Dynamics

The small matrix decomposition of the quasi-adiabatic propagator path integral (SMatPI) for a system coupled to a harmonic bath, which accounts for multitime memory correlations in the influence functional without the use of tensors, is extended to include a time-dependent term that drives the system. In the case of a periodic field, the algorithm requires the construction of SMatPI matrices initialized over a short time interval. The SMatPI algorithm circumvents the large array storage of tensor-based iterative path integral decompositions and, in the case of a periodic field, also eliminates the demanding tensor multiplication at each time step, leading to dramatic savings which allow the fully quantum mechanical treatment of multistate systems and long-memory environments.

On the Simulation of Two-dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy of Indole-containing Peptides

A benchmark study of low-cost multiconfigurational CASSCF/CASPT2 schemes for computing the electronic structure of indole is presented. This facilitates the simulation of near-ultraviolet (UV) pump visible (VIS) probe (i.e. two-color) two-dimensional electronic spectra (2DES) of homo- and hetero-aggregates as well as for processing of multiple snapshots from molecular dynamics simulations. Fingerprint excited-state absorption signatures of indole are identified in a broad spectral window between 10 and 25 k cm^-1 . The 18-24 k cm^-1 spectral window which has no absorption of the monomer and noninteracting aggregates is ideally suited to embed charge-transfer signatures in stacked aggregates. The small peptide Trp-cage, containing a tryptophan and a tyrosine amino acids, having indole and phenol as side chains, respectively, serves to prove the concept. Clear charge-transfer signatures are found in the proposed spectral window for an interchromophore distance of 5 Å making near-UV pump VIS probe 2DES a suitable technique for resolving closely packed aggregates. We demonstrate that 2DES utilizing ultra-short pulses has the potential to resolve the nature of the spectroscopically resolved electronic states and that the line shapes of the excited-state absorption signals can be correlated to the polarity of the relevant states.

Non-Perturbative Calculation of Two-Dimensional Spectra Using the Stochastic Hierarchy of Pure States

Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy has become an important experimental technique to obtain information on, for example, electronic coherences in large molecular complexes or vibronic couplings. For the correct interpretation of two-dimensional spectra, however, detailed theoretical calculations are required. Reliable theoretical calculations are impeded by large system sizes and large numbers of vibrational degrees of freedom that need to be explicitly taken into account. Here, we demonstrate that a numerical approach based on a stochastic hierarchy of pure states (HOPS) does allow the calculation of two-dimensional spectra, notwithstanding the stochasticity of the method. The number of coupled equations as well as the hierarchy depth shows a superior scaling with system size as compared to the previously developed hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM). Large systems thus become accessible for numerical calculation of two-dimensional spectra.
