Viscoelastic relaxation and topological fluctuations in glass-forming liquids

A method for characterizing the topological fluctuations in liquids is proposed. This approach exploits the concept of the weighted gyration tensor of a collection of particles and permits the definition of a local configurational unit (LCU). The first principal axis of the gyration tensor serves as the director of the LCU, which can be tracked and analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations. Analysis of moderately supercooled Kob-Andersen mixtures suggests that orientational relaxation of the LCU closely follows viscoelastic relaxation and exhibits a two-stage behavior. The slow relaxing component of the LCU corresponds to the structural, Maxwellian mechanical relaxation. Additionally, it is found that the mean curvature of the LCUs is approximately zero at the Maxwell relaxation time with the Gaussian curvature being negative. This observation implies that structural relaxation occurs when the configurationally stable and destabilized regions interpenetrate each other in a bicontinuous manner. Finally, the mean and Gaussian curvatures of the LCUs can serve as reduced variables for the shear stress correlation, providing a compelling proof of the close connection between viscoelastic relaxation and topological fluctuations in glass-forming liquids.

Glass transition and reversible gelation in asymmetric binary mixtures: A study by mode coupling theory and molecular dynamics

The glass transition and the binodals of asymmetric binary mixtures are investigated from the effective fluid approach in the mode coupling theory and by molecular dynamics. Motivated by previous theoretical predictions, the hard-sphere mixture and the Asakura-Oosawa models are used to analyze experimental results from the literature, relative to polystyrene spheres mixed either with linear polymers or with dense microgel particles. In agreement with the experimental observations, the specificity of the depletant particles is shown to favor lower density gels. It further favors equilibrium gelation by reducing also the tendency of the system to phase separate. These results are confirmed by a phenomenological modification of the mode coupling theory in which the vertex functions are computed at an effective density lower than the actual one. A model effective potential in asymmetric mixtures of hard particles is used to further check this phenomenological modification against molecular dynamics simulation.

Linking density functional and mode coupling models for supercooled liquids

We compare predictions from two familiar models of the metastable supercooled liquid, respectively, constructed with thermodynamic and dynamic approaches. In the so called density functional theory the free energy F[ρ] of the liquid is a functional of the inhomogeneous density ρ(r). The metastable state is identified as a local minimum of F[ρ]. The sharp density profile characterizing ρ(r) is identified as a single particle oscillator, whose frequency is obtained from the parameters of the optimum density function. On the other hand, a dynamic approach to supercooled liquids is taken in the mode coupling theory (MCT) which predict a sharp ergodicity-non-ergodicity transition at a critical density. The single particle dynamics in the non-ergodic state, treated approximately, represents a propagating mode whose characteristic frequency is computed from the corresponding memory function of the MCT. The mass localization parameters in the above two models (treated in their simplest forms) are obtained, respectively, in terms of the corresponding natural frequencies depicted and are shown to have comparable magnitudes.
