Can phoretic particles swim in two dimensions?

Interplay of chemotactic force, Péclet number, and dimensionality dictates the dynamics of auto-chemotactic chiral active droplets

In living and synthetic active matter systems, the constituents can self-propel and interact with each other and with the environment through various physicochemical mechanisms. Among these mechanisms, chemotactic and auto-chemotactic effects are widely observed. The impact of (auto-)chemotactic effects on achiral active matter has been a recent research focus. However, the influence of these effects on chiral active matter remains elusive. Here, we develop a Brownian dynamics model coupled with a diffusion equation to examine the dynamics of auto-chemotactic chiral active droplets in both quasi-two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) systems. By quantifying the droplet trajectory as a function of the dimensionless Péclet number and chemotactic strength, our simulations well reproduce the curling and helical trajectories of nematic droplets in a surfactant-rich solution reported by Krüger et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 048003 (2016)]. The modeled curling trajectory in 2D exhibits an emergent chirality, also consistent with the experiment. We further show that the geometry of the chiral droplet trajectories, characterized by the pitch and diameter, can be used to infer the velocities of the droplet. Interestingly, we find that, unlike the achiral case, the velocities of chiral active droplets show dimensionality dependence: its mean instantaneous velocity is higher in 3D than in 2D, whereas its mean migration velocity is lower in 3D than in 2D. Taken together, our particle-based simulations provide new insights into the dynamics of auto-chemotactic chiral active droplets, reveal the effects of dimensionality, and pave the way toward their applications, such as drug delivery, sensors, and micro-reactors.

Non-Brownian diffusion and chaotic rheology of autophoretic disks

The dynamics of a two-dimensional autophoretic disk is quantified as a minimal model for the chaotic trajectories undertaken by active droplets. Via direct numerical simulations, we show that the mean-square displacement of the disk in a quiescent fluid is linear at long times. Surprisingly, however, this apparently diffusive behavior is non-Brownian, owing to strong cross correlations in the displacement tensor. The effect of a shear flow field on the chaotic motion of an autophoretic disk is examined. Here, the stresslet on the disk is chaotic for weak shear flows; a dilute suspension of such disks would exhibit a chaotic shear rheology. This chaotic rheology is quenched first into a periodic state and ultimately a steady state as the flow strength is increased.

Self-propulsion in 2D confinement: phoretic and hydrodynamic interactions

Chemically active Janus particles generate tangential concentration gradients along their surface for self-propulsion. Although this is well studied in unbounded domains, the analysis in biologically relevant environments such as confinement is scarce. In this work, we study the motion of a Janus sphere in weak confinement. The particle is placed at an arbitrary location, with arbitrary orientation between the two walls. Using the method of reflections, we study the effect of confining planar boundaries on the phoretic and hydrodynamic interactions, and their consequence on the Janus particle dynamics. The dynamical trajectories are analyzed using phase diagrams for different surface coverage of activity and solute-particle interactions. In addition to near wall states such as 'sliding' and 'hovering', we demonstrate that accounting for two planar boundaries reveals two new states: channel-spanning oscillations and damped oscillations around the centerline, which were characterized as 'scattering' or 'reflection' by earlier analyses on single wall interactions. Using phase-diagrams, we highlight the differences in inert-facing and active-facing Janus particles. We also compare the dynamics of Janus particles with squirmers for contrasting the chemical interactions with hydrodynamic effects. Insights from the current work suggest that biological and artificial swimmers sense their surroundings through long-ranged interactions, that can be modified by altering the surface properties.

Active spheres induce Marangoni flows that drive collective dynamics

For monolayers of chemically active particles at a fluid interface, collective dynamics is predicted to arise owing to activity-induced Marangoni flow even if the particles are not self-propelled. Here, we test this prediction by employing a monolayer of spherically symmetric active [Formula: see text] particles located at an oil-water interface with or without addition of a nonionic surfactant. Due to the spherical symmetry, an individual particle does not self-propel. However, the gradients produced by the photochemical fuel degradation give rise to long-ranged Marangoni flows. For the case in which surfactant is added to the system, we indeed observe the emergence of collective motion, with dynamics dependent on the particle coverage of the monolayer. The experimental observations are discussed within the framework of a simple theoretical mean-field model.

The impact of geometrical confinement in a slab on the behavior of tracer particles near active glucose oxidase micropump

Patches of surface-immobilized and catalytically active enzyme, immersed into a solution with the corresponding substrate, induce flow in the solution. Such systems are currently investigated as a promising direction in the development of self-powered micropumps that could operate autonomously within microfluidic devices. Here, we investigate the influence of confinement, within a slab of height H, on the response exhibited by silica tracer particles sedimented near a chemically active glucose oxidase patch which is immersed into a glucose solution of very low ionic strength. Irrespective of the value H, within the range explored in this study, a region depleted of tracers forms around the patch. When H is not much larger than the radius of the patch, the rate of growth of the depletion zone depends on H; somewhat surprisingly, this dependence is influenced by the glucose concentration. The results are discussed within the context of a simple model for a chemically active patch.

Chaotic Swimming of Phoretic Particles

The swimming of a rigid phoretic particle in an isotropic fluid is studied numerically as a function of the dimensionless solute emission rate (or Péclet number Pe). The particle sets into motion at a critical Pe. Whereas the particle trajectory is straight at a small enough Pe, it is found that it loses its stability at a critical Pe in favor of a meandering motion. When Pe is increased further, the particle meanders at a short scale but its trajectory wraps into a circle at a larger scale. Increasing even further, Pe causes the swimmer to escape momentarily the circular trajectory in favor of chaotic motion, which lasts for a certain time, before regaining a circular trajectory, and so on. The chaotic bursts become more and more frequent as Pe increases, until the trajectory becomes fully chaotic, via the intermittency scenario. The statistics of the trajectory is found to be of the run-and-tumble-like nature at a short enough time and of diffusive nature at a long time without any source of noise.

Self-propulsion of symmetric chemically active particles: Point-source model and experiments on camphor disks

Solid undeformable particles surrounded by a liquid medium or interface may propel themselves by altering their local environment. Such nonmechanical swimming is at work in autophoretic swimmers, whose self-generated field gradient induces a slip velocity on their surface, and in interfacial swimmers, which exploit unbalance in surface tension. In both classes of systems, swimmers with intrinsic asymmetry have received the most attention but self-propulsion is also possible for particles that are perfectly isotropic. The underlying symmetry-breaking instability has been established theoretically for autophoretic systems but has yet to be observed experimentally for solid particles. For interfacial swimmers, several experimental works point to such a mechanism, but its understanding has remained incomplete. The goal of this work is to fill this gap. Building on an earlier proposal, we first develop a point-source model that may be applied generically to interfacial or phoretic swimmers. Using this approximate but unifying picture, we show that they operate in very different regimes and obtain analytical predictions for the propulsion velocity and its dependence on swimmer size and asymmetry. Next, we present experiments on interfacial camphor disks showing that they indeed self-propel in an advection-dominated regime where intrinsic asymmetry is irrelevant and that the swimming velocity increases sublinearly with size. Finally, we discuss the merits and limitations of the point-source model in light of the experiments and point out its broader relevance.
