Entropy Production in Reaction-Diffusion Systems Confined in Narrow Channels

This work analyzes the effect of wall geometry when a reaction-diffusion system is confined to a narrow channel. In particular, we study the entropy production density in the reversible Gray-Scott system. Using an effective diffusion equation that considers modifications by the channel characteristics, we find that the entropy density changes its value but not its qualitative behavior, which helps explore the structure-formation space.

Diffusion coefficients and MSD measurements on curved membranes and porous media

We study some geometric aspects that influence the transport properties of particles that diffuse on curved surfaces. We compare different approaches to surface diffusion based on the Laplace-Beltrami operator adapted to predict concentration along entire membranes, confined subdomains along surfaces, or within porous media. Our goal is to summarize, firstly, how diffusion in these systems results in different types of diffusion coefficients and mean square displacement measurements, and secondly, how these two factors are affected by the concavity of the surface, the shape of the possible barriers or obstacles that form the available domains, the sinuosity, tortuosity, and constrictions of the trajectories and even how the observation plane affects the measurements of the diffusion. In addition to presenting a critical and organized comparison between different notions of MSD, in this review, we test the correspondence between theoretical predictions and numerical simulations by performing finite element simulations and illustrate some situations where diffusion theory can be applied. We briefly reviewed computational schemes for understanding surface diffusion and finally, discussed how this work contributes to understanding the role of surface diffusion transport properties in porous media and their relationship to other transport processes.

Surface diffusion in narrow channels on curved domains

We study the transport properties of diffusing particles restricted to confined regions on curved surfaces. We relate particle mobility to the curvature of the surface where they diffuse and the constraint due to confinement. Applying the Fick-Jacobs procedure to diffusion in curved manifolds shows that the local diffusion coefficient is related to average geometric quantities such as constriction and tortuosity. Macroscopic experiments can record such quantities through an average surface diffusion coefficient. We test the accuracy of our theoretical predictions of the effective diffusion coefficient through finite-element numerical solutions of the Laplace-Beltrami diffusion equation. We discuss how this work contributes to understanding the link between particle trajectories and the mean-square displacement.

New Perspectives for Evaluating the Mass Transport in Porous Catalysts and Unfolding Macro- and Microkinetics

In this article we shed light on newly emerging perspectives to characterize and understand the interplay of diffusive mass transport and surface catalytic processes in pores of gas phase metal catalysts. As a case study, nanoporous gold, as an interesting example exhibiting a well-defined pore structure and a high activity for total and partial oxidation reactions is considered. PFG NMR (pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance) measurements allowed here for a quantitative evaluation of gas diffusivities within the material. STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy) tomography furthermore provided additional insight into the structural details of the pore system, helping to judge which of its features are most decisive for slowing down mass transport. Based on the quantitative knowledge about the diffusion coefficients inside a porous catalyst, it becomes possible to disentangle mass transport contributions form the measured reaction kinetics and to determine the kinetic rate constant of the underlying catalytic surface reaction. In addition, predictions can be made for an improved effectiveness of the catalyst, i.e., optimized conversion rates. This approach will be discussed at the example of low-temperature CO oxidation, efficiently catalysed by npAu at 30 °C. The case study shall reveal that novel porous materials exhibiting well-defined micro- and mesoscopic features and sufficient catalytic activity, in combination with modern techniques to evaluate diffusive transport, offer interesting new opportunities for an integral understanding of catalytic processes.

Extended release of dexamethasone from oleogel based rods

HYPOTHESIS

Topical and systemic methods are not able to deliver ophthalmic drugs for treatment of retinal diseases. Consequently, invasive monthly intravitreal injections through the eyeball are required to deliver retinal drugs. A reduction in the frequency of the injection through extended release of the drugs could have significant clinical benefits.

EXPERIMENTS

Oleogels containing ethyl cellulose as the gelator at 10% (wt%) in soybean oil were loaded with dexamethasone above the solubility limit and expunged from a syringe to create cylindrical rods for extended drug delivery. The devices were imaged to explore particle distribution and drug release was measured under sink conditions in buffer. A model was developed and fitted to data to determine effective drug diffusivity.

FINDINGS

Dexamethasone is released slowly due to the presence of the drug particles that serve as drug depots. The release increases from 600 to 3000 h as the drug loading is increased from 3% to 28%. The release profiles can be modeled by considering drug dissolution and diffusion, as well as the tortuosity of the matrix due to the presence of the voids formed after the drug particles have dissolved. The proposed approach is promising as the release profiles of the drug are comparable to commercial devices.

Review on the Macro-Transport Processes Theory for Irregular Pores able to Perform Catalytic Reactions

We review and generalize a recent theoretical framework that provides a sound physicochemical basis to describe how volume and surface diffusion are affected by adsorption and desorption processes, as well as by catalytic conversion within the space defined by the irregular geometry of the pores in a material. The theory is based on two single-dimensional mass conservation equations for irregular domains deduced for the volumetric (bulk) and surface mass concentrations. It offers a powerful tool for analyzing and modeling mass transport across porous media like zeolites or artificially build materials, since it establishes how the microscopic quantities that refer to the internal details of the geometry, the flow and the interactions within the irregular pore can be translated into macroscopic variables that are currently measured in experiments. The use of the theory in mass uptake experiments is explained in terms of breakthrough curves and effective mass diffusion coefficients which are explicitly related to the internal geometry of the pores.
