Geometric phaselike effects of driven transport in presence of reservoir squeezing

In a bare bosonic site coupled to two reservoirs, we explore the statistics of boson exchange in the presence of two simultaneous processes: squeezing the two reservoirs and driving the two reservoirs. The squeezing parameters compete with the geometric phaselike effect or geometricity to alter the nature of the steady-state flux and noise. The even (odd) geometric cumulants and the total minimum entropy are found to be symmetric (antisymmetric) with respect to exchanging the left and right squeezing parameters. Upon increasing the strength of the squeezing parameters, loss of geometricity is observed. Under maximum squeezing, one can recover a standard steady-state fluctuation theorem even in the presence of phase-different driving protocol. A recently proposed modified geometric thermodynamic uncertainty principle is found to be robust.

Quantum thermodynamics of periodically driven polaritonic systems

We investigate the energy distribution and quantum thermodynamics in periodically-driven polaritonic systems in the stationary state at room temperature. Specifically, we consider an exciton strongly coupled to a harmonic oscillator and quantify the energy reorganization between these two systems and their interaction as a function of coupling strength, driving force, and detuning. After deriving the quantum master equation for the polariton density matrix with weak environment interactions, we obtain the dissipative time propagator and the long-time evolution of an equilibrium initial state. This approach provides direct access to the stationary state and overcomes the difficulties found in the numerical evolution of weakly damped quantum systems near resonance, also providing maps on the polariton lineshape. Then, we compute the thermodynamic performance during harmonic modulation and demonstrate that maximum efficiency occurs at resonance. We also provide an expression for the irreversible heat rate and numerically demonstrate that this agrees with the thermodynamic laws.

Entropy Production in Open Systems: The Predominant Role of Intraenvironment Correlations

We show that the entropy production in small open systems coupled to environments made of extended baths is predominantly caused by the displacement of the environment from equilibrium rather than, as often assumed, the mutual information between the system and the environment. The latter contribution is strongly bounded from above by the Araki-Lieb inequality and therefore is not time extensive, in contrast to the entropy production itself. We confirm our results with exact numerical calculations of the system-environment dynamics.

The Correlation Production in Thermodynamics

Macroscopic many-body systems always exhibit irreversible behaviors. However, in principle, the underlying microscopic dynamics of the many-body system, either the (quantum) von Neumann or (classical) Liouville equation, guarantees that the entropy of an isolated system does not change with time, which is quite confusing compared with the macroscopic irreversibility. We notice that indeed the macroscopic entropy increase in standard thermodynamics is associated with the correlation production inside the full ensemble state of the whole system. In open systems, the irreversible entropy production of the open system can be proved to be equivalent with the correlation production between the open system and its environment. During the free diffusion of an isolated ideal gas, the correlation between the spatial and momentum distributions is increasing monotonically, and it could well reproduce the entropy increase result in standard thermodynamics. In the presence of particle collisions, the single-particle distribution always approaches the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution as its steady state, and its entropy increase indeed indicates the correlation production between the particles. In all these examples, the total entropy of the whole isolated system keeps constant, while the correlation production reproduces the irreversible entropy increase in the standard macroscopic thermodynamics. In this sense, the macroscopic irreversibility and the microscopic reversibility no longer contradict with each other.
