Rational extended thermodynamics of a rarefied polyatomic gas with molecular relaxation processes

Rotational symmetry of the multiple-relaxation-time collision model

We point out that the minimal components of the tensorial moments of the distribution that can be independently relaxed in collision without violating rotational symmetry are its irreducible representation (irrep) of SO(3), and a generic multiple-relaxation-time collision model can be constructed by independently relaxing these components. As the simplest example the irreps of the second moment are the traceless deviatoric stress and an isotropic tensor which is conserved in monatomic gases. Applying the decomposition to the thermal lattice Boltzmann model for polyatomic gases [Phys. Rev. E 77, 035701(R) (2008)PRESCM1539-375510.1103/PhysRevE.77.035701], the shear and bulk viscosities are decoupled by two independent relaxation times. The hydrodynamic equation of the model is obtained via Chapman-Enskog calculation and verified by numerical simulation.

Relationships between rational extended thermodynamics and extended irreversible thermodynamics

We consider a few conceptual questions on extended thermodynamics, with the aim to contribute to a higher contact between rational extended thermodynamics and extended irreversible thermodynamics. Both theories take a number of fluxes as independent variables, but they differ in the formalism being used to deal with the exploitation of the second principle (rational thermodynamics in the first one and classical irreversible thermodynamics in the second one). Rational extended thermodynamics is more restricted in the range of systems to be analysed, but it is able to obtain a wider number of restrictions and deeper specifications from the second law. By contrast, extended irreversible thermodynamics is more phenomenological, its mathematical formalism is more elementary, but it may deal with a wider diversity of systems although with less detail. Further comparison and dialogue between both branches of extended thermodynamics would be useful for a fuller deployment and deepening of extended thermodynamics. Besides these two approaches, one should also consider the Hamiltonian approach, formalisms with internal variables, and more microscopic approaches, based on kinetic theory or on non-equilibrium ensemble formalisms. Rational extended thermodynamics of dense polyatomic gases incorporating molecular rotation and vibration

The paper aims to construct a rational extended thermodynamics (RET) theory of dense polyatomic gases by taking into account the experimental evidence that the relaxation time of molecular rotation and that of molecular vibration are quite different from each other. For simplicity, we focus on gases with only one dissipative process due to bulk viscosity. In fact, in some polyatomic gases, the effect of bulk viscosity is much larger than that of shear viscosity and heat conductivity. The present theory includes the previous RET theory of dense gases with six fields as a particular case, and it also includes the RET theory of rarefied polyatomic gases with seven fields in the rarefied-gas limit. The closure is carried out by using the universal principles, that is, Galilean invariance and objectivity, entropy principle, and thermodynamic stability (convexity of entropy), where the duality principle connecting rarefied gases to dense gases also plays an important role. A detailed discussion is devoted to the expression of the production terms in the system of balance equations. As typical examples, we study a gas with virial equations of state and a van der Waals gas. Lastly the dispersion relation of a linear wave is derived, and its comparison with experimental data is made. Entropy growth and entropy production rate in binary mixture shock waves

Entropy growth and entropy production rate are analyzed in the stationary shock waves in a multitemperature model of a binary mixture of gases. The model is developed within the framework of extended thermodynamics. It is shown that the entropy density of the mixture increases monotonically through the shock profile, whereas the entropy densities of the constituents may not be monotonic. The analysis of entropy growth rate distinguished the contributions of momentum exchange (diffusion) and internal energy exchange between the constituents, and showed a substantially larger contribution of diffusion. At the same time, it is shown that the entropy production rates of the constituents may not be non-negative throughout the whole shock structure.

Extended Thermodynamics of Rarefied Polyatomic Gases: 15-Field Theory Incorporating Relaxation Processes of Molecular Rotation and Vibration

After summarizing the present status of Rational Extended Thermodynamics (RET) of gases, which is an endeavor to generalize the Navier-Stokes and Fourier (NSF) theory of viscous heat-conducting fluids, we develop the molecular RET theory of rarefied polyatomic gases with 15 independent fields. The theory is justified, at mesoscopic level, by a generalized Boltzmann equation in which the distribution function depends on two internal variables that take into account the energy exchange among the different molecular modes of a gas, that is, translational, rotational, and vibrational modes. By adopting the generalized Bhatnagar, Gross and Krook (BGK)-type collision term, we derive explicitly the closed system of field equations with the use of the Maximum Entropy Principle (MEP). The NSF theory is derived from the RET theory as a limiting case of small relaxation times via the Maxwellian iteration. The relaxation times introduced in the theory are shown to be related to the shear and bulk viscosities and heat conductivity.
