Disordered hyperuniformity in two-component nonadditive hard-disk plasmas

Designer pair statistics of disordered many-particle systems with novel properties

The knowledge of exact analytical functional forms for the pair correlation function g2(r) and its corresponding structure factor S(k) of disordered many-particle systems is limited. For fundamental and practical reasons, it is highly desirable to add to the existing database of analytical functional forms for such pair statistics. Here, we design a plethora of such pair functions in direct and Fourier spaces across the first three Euclidean space dimensions that are realizable by diverse many-particle systems with varying degrees of correlated disorder across length scales, spanning a wide spectrum of hyperuniform, typical nonhyperuniform, and antihyperuniform ones. This is accomplished by utilizing an efficient inverse algorithm that determines equilibrium states with up to pair interactions at positive temperatures that precisely match targeted forms for both g2(r) and S(k). Among other results, we realize an example with the strongest hyperuniform property among known positive-temperature equilibrium states, critical-point systems (implying unusual 1D systems with phase transitions) that are not in the Ising universality class, systems that attain self-similar pair statistics under Fourier transformation, and an experimentally feasible polymer model. We show that our pair functions enable one to achieve many-particle systems with a wide range of translational order and self-diffusion coefficients D, which are inversely related to one another. One can design other realizable pair statistics via linear combinations of our functions or by applying our inverse procedure to other desirable functional forms. Our approach facilitates the inverse design of materials with desirable physical and chemical properties by tuning their pair statistics.

Approach to hyperuniformity in a metallic glass-forming material exhibiting a fragile to strong glass transition

We investigate a metallic glass-forming (GF) material (Al₉₀Sm₁₀) exhibiting a fragile-strong (FS) glass-formation by molecular dynamics simulation to better understand this highly distinctive pattern of glass-formation in which many of the usual phenomenological relations describing relaxation times and diffusion of ordinary GF liquids no longer apply, and where instead genuine thermodynamic features are observed in response functions and little thermodynamic signature is exhibited at the glass transition temperature, T_g. Given the many unexpected similarities between the thermodynamics and dynamics of this metallic GF material with water, we first focus on the anomalous static scattering in this liquid, following recent studies on water, silicon and other FS GF liquids. We quantify the "hyperuniformity index" H of our liquid, which provides a quantitative measure of molecular "jamming". To gain insight into the T-dependence and magnitude of H, we also estimate another more familiar measure of particle localization, the Debye-Waller parameter 〈u²〉 describing the mean-square particle displacement on a timescale on the order of the fast relaxation time, and we also calculate H and 〈u²〉 for heated crystalline Cu. This comparative analysis between H and 〈u²〉 for crystalline and metallic glass materials allows us to understand the critical value of H on the order of 10^-3 as being analogous to the Lindemann criterion for both the melting of crystals and the "softening" of glasses. We further interpret the emergence of FS GF and liquid-liquid phase separation in this class of liquids to arise from a cooperative self-assembly process in the GF liquid.

Equilibrium states corresponding to targeted hyperuniform nonequilibrium pair statistics

The Zhang-Torquato conjecture [G. Zhang and S. Torquato, Phys. Rev. E, 2020, 101, 032124.] states that any realizable pair correlation function g₂(r) or structure factor S(k) of a translationally invariant nonequilibrium system can be attained by an equilibrium ensemble involving only (up to) effective two-body interactions. To further test and study this conjecture, we consider two singular nonequilibrium models of recent interest that also have the exotic hyperuniformity property: a 2D "perfect glass" and a 3D critical absorbing-state model. We find that each nonequilibrium target can be achieved accurately by equilibrium states with effective one- and two-body potentials, lending further support to the conjecture. To characterize the structural degeneracy of such a nonequilibrium-equilibrium correspondence, we compute higher-order statistics for both models, as well as those for a hyperuniform 3D uniformly randomized lattice (URL), whose higher-order statistics can be very precisely ascertained. Interestingly, we find that the differences in the higher-order statistics between nonequilibrium and equilibrium systems with matching pair statistics, as measured by the "hole" probability distribution, provide measures of the degree to which a system is out of equilibrium. We show that all three systems studied possess the bounded-hole property and that holes near the maximum hole size in the URL are much rarer than those in the underlying simple cubic lattice. Remarkably, upon quenching, the effective potentials for all three systems possess local energy minima (i.e., inherent structures) with stronger forms of hyperuniformity compared to their target counterparts. Our methods are expected to facilitate the self-assembly of tunable hyperuniform soft-matter systems.

Hyperuniform jammed sphere packings have anomalous material properties

A spatial distribution is hyperuniform if it has local density fluctuations that vanish in the limit of long length scales. Hyperuniformity is a well known property of both crystals and quasicrystals. Of recent interest, however, is disordered hyperuniformity: the presence of hyperuniform scaling without long-range configurational order. Jammed granular packings have been proposed as an example of disordered hyperuniformity, but recent numerical investigation has revealed that many jammed systems instead exhibit a complex set of distinct behaviors at long, emergent length scales. We use the Voronoi tessellation as a tool to define a set of rescaling transformations that can impose hyperuniformity on an arbitrary weighted point process, and show that these transformations can be used in simulations to iteratively generate hyperuniform, mechanically stable packings of athermal soft spheres. These hyperuniform jammed packings display atypical mechanical properties, particularly in the low-frequency phononic excitations, which exhibit an isolated band of highly collective modes and a band gap around zero frequency.

Minimal statistical-mechanical model for multihyperuniform patterns in avian retina

Birds are known for their extremely acute sense of vision. The very peculiar structural distribution of five different types of cones in the retina underlies this exquisite ability to sample light. It was recently found that each cone population as well as their total population display a disordered pattern in which long-wavelength density fluctuations vanish [Jiao et al., Phys. Rev. E 89, 022721 (2014)PLEEE81539-375510.1103/PhysRevE.89.022721]. This property, known as hyperuniformity, is also present in perfect crystals. In situations like the avian retina in which both the global structure and that of each component display hyperuniformity, the system is said to be multihyperuniform. In this work, we aim at devising a minimal statistical-mechanical model that can reproduce the main features of the spatial distribution of photoreceptors in avian retina, namely the presence of disorder, multihyperuniformity, and local heterocoordination. This last feature is key to avoiding local clustering of the same type of photoreceptors, an undesirable feature for the efficient sampling of light. For this purpose, we formulate a minimal statistical-mechanical model that definitively exhibits the required structural properties: an equimolar three-component mixture (one component to sample each primary color: red, green, and blue) of nonadditive hard disks to which a long-range logarithmic repulsion is added between like particles. Interestingly, a Voronoi analysis of our idealized system of photoreceptors shows that the space-filling Voronoi polygons display a rather uniform area distribution, symmetrically centered around that of a regular lattice, a structural property also found in human retina. Disordered multihyperuniformity offers an alternative to generate photoreceptor patterns with minimal long-range concentration and density fluctuations. This is the key to overcoming the difficulties in devising an efficient visual system in which crystal-like order is absent.

Optimized Large Hyperuniform Binary Colloidal Suspensions in Two Dimensions

The creation of disordered hyperuniform materials with extraordinary optical properties (e.g., large complete photonic band gaps) requires a capacity to synthesize large samples that are effectively hyperuniform down to the nanoscale. Motivated by this challenge, we propose a feasible equilibrium fabrication protocol using binary paramagnetic colloidal particles confined in a 2D plane. The strong and long-ranged dipolar interaction induced by a tunable magnetic field is free from screening effects that attenuate long-ranged electrostatic interactions in charged colloidal systems. Specifically, we numerically find a family of optimal size ratios that makes the two-phase system effectively hyperuniform. We show that hyperuniformity is a general consequence of low isothermal compressibilities, which makes our protocol suitable to treat more general systems with other long-ranged interactions, dimensionalities, and/or polydispersity. Our methodology paves the way to synthesize large photonic hyperuniform materials that function in the visible to infrared range and hence may accelerate the discovery of novel photonic materials.

Hydrodynamics of random-organizing hyperuniform fluids

Disordered hyperuniform structures are locally random while uniform like crystals at large length scales. Recently, an exotic hyperuniform fluid state was found in several nonequilibrium systems, while the underlying physics remains unknown. In this work, we propose a nonequilibrium (driven-dissipative) hard-sphere model and formulate a hydrodynamic theory based on Navier-Stokes equations to uncover the general mechanism of the fluidic hyperuniformity (HU). At a fixed density, this model system undergoes a smooth transition from an absorbing state to an active hyperuniform fluid and then, to the equilibrium fluid by changing the dissipation strength. We study the criticality of the absorbing-phase transition. We find that the origin of fluidic HU can be understood as the damping of a stochastic harmonic oscillator in q space, which indicates that the suppressed long-wavelength density fluctuation in the hyperuniform fluid can exhibit as either acoustic (resonance) mode or diffusive (overdamped) mode. Importantly, our theory reveals that the damping dissipation and active reciprocal interaction (driving) are the two ingredients for fluidic HU. Based on this principle, we further demonstrate how to realize the fluidic HU in an experimentally accessible active spinner system and discuss the possible realization in other systems.

Hyperuniformity on spherical surfaces

We study and characterize local density fluctuations of ordered and disordered hyperuniform point distributions on spherical surfaces. In spite of the extensive literature on disordered hyperuniform systems in Euclidean geometries, to date few works have dealt with the problem of hyperuniformity in curved spaces. Indeed, some systems that display disordered hyperuniformity, like the spatial distribution of photoreceptors in avian retina, actually occur on curved surfaces. Here we will focus on the local particle number variance and its dependence on the size of the sampling window (which we take to be a spherical cap) for regular and uniform point distributions, as well as for equilibrium configurations of fluid particles interacting through Lennard-Jones, dipole-dipole, and charge-charge potentials. We show that the scaling of the local number variance as a function of the window size enables one to characterize hyperuniform and nonhyperuniform point patterns also on spherical surfaces.

Methodology to construct large realizations of perfectly hyperuniform disordered packings

Disordered hyperuniform packings (or dispersions) are unusual amorphous two-phase materials that are endowed with exotic physical properties. Such hyperuniform systems are characterized by an anomalous suppression of volume-fraction fluctuations at infinitely long-wavelengths, compared to ordinary disordered materials. While there has been growing interest in such singular states of amorphous matter, a major obstacle has been an inability to produce large samples that are perfectly hyperuniform due to practical limitations of conventional numerical and experimental methods. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a general theoretical methodology to construct perfectly hyperuniform packings in d-dimensional Euclidean space R^{d}. Specifically, beginning with an initial general tessellation of space by disjoint cells that meets a "bounded-cell" condition, hard particles of general shape are placed inside each cell such that the local-cell particle packing fractions are identical to the global packing fraction. We prove that the constructed packings with a polydispersity in size are perfectly hyperuniform in the infinite-sample-size limit, regardless of particle shapes, positions, and numbers per cell. We use this theoretical formulation to devise an efficient and tunable algorithm to generate extremely large realizations of such packings. We employ two distinct initial tessellations: Voronoi as well as sphere tessellations. Beginning with Voronoi tessellations, we show that our algorithm can remarkably convert extremely large nonhyperuniform packings into hyperuniform ones in R^{2} and R^{3}. Implementing our theoretical methodology on sphere tessellations, we establish the hyperuniformity of the classical Hashin-Shtrikman multiscale coated-spheres structures, which are known to be two-phase media microstructures that possess optimal effective transport and elastic properties. A consequence of our work is a rigorous demonstration that packings that have identical tessellations can either be nonhyperuniform or hyperuniform by simply tuning local characteristics. It is noteworthy that our computationally designed hyperuniform two-phase systems can easily be fabricated via state-of-the-art methods, such as 2D photolithographic and 3D printing technologies. In addition, the tunability of our methodology offers a route for the discovery of novel disordered hyperuniform two-phase materials.

Hyperuniformity order metric of Barlow packings

The concept of hyperuniformity has been a useful tool in the study of density fluctuations at large length scales in systems ranging across the natural and mathematical sciences. One can rank a large class of hyperuniform systems by their ability to suppress long-range density fluctuations through the use of a hyperuniformity order metric Λ[over ¯]. We apply this order metric to the Barlow packings, which are the infinitely degenerate densest packings of identical rigid spheres that are distinguished by their stacking geometries and include the commonly known fcc lattice and hcp crystal. The "stealthy stacking" theorem implies that these packings are all stealthy hyperuniform, a strong type of hyperuniformity, which involves the suppression of scattering up to a wave vector K. We describe the geometry of three classes of Barlow packings, two disordered classes and small-period packings. In addition, we compute a lower bound on K for all Barlow packings. We compute Λ[over ¯] for the aforementioned three classes of Barlow packings and find that, to a very good approximation, it is linear in the fraction of fcc-like clusters, taking values between those of least-ordered hcp and most-ordered fcc. This implies that the value of Λ[over ¯] of all Barlow packings is primarily controlled by the local cluster geometry. These results highlight the special nature of anisotropic stacking disorder, which provides impetus for future research on the development of anisotropic order metrics and hyperuniformity properties.

Hidden Hyperuniformity in Soft Polymeric Materials

We investigate the nature of long-range density fluctuations in melts of model "soft" polymers, specifically stars and bottlebrushes, over a wide temperature range by molecular dynamics simulation. The cores of the stars and the backbones of bottlebrush polymers are found to have a hyperuniform distribution; i.e., they exhibit anomalously small density fluctuations over a wide temperature range above the glass transition temperature. The hyperuniformity of these substituent polymer subregions is hidden since the fluid as a whole does not exhibit this property. These findings offer a strategy for the practical design of hyperuniform polymeric materials.

Rational design of stealthy hyperuniform two-phase media with tunable order

Disordered stealthy hyperuniform materials are exotic amorphous states of matter that have attracted recent attention because of their novel structural characteristics (hidden order at large length scales) and physical properties, including desirable photonic and transport properties. It is therefore useful to devise algorithms that enable one to design a wide class of such amorphous configurations at will. In this paper, we present several algorithms enabling the systematic identification and generation of discrete (digitized) stealthy hyperuniform patterns with a tunable degree of order, paving the way towards the rational design of disordered materials endowed with novel thermodynamic and physical properties. To quantify the degree of order or disorder of the stealthy systems, we utilize the discrete version of the τ order metric, which accounts for the underlying spatial correlations that exist across all relevant length scales in a given digitized two-phase (or, equivalently, a two-spin state) system of interest. Our results impinge on a myriad of fields, ranging from physics, materials science and engineering, visual perception, and information theory to modern data science.

Binary mixtures of charged colloids: a potential route to synthesize disordered hyperuniform materials

Disordered multihyperuniformity derived from binary plasmas

Disordered multihyperuniform many-particle systems are exotic amorphous states that allow exquisite color sensing capabilities due to their anomalous suppression of density fluctuations for distinct subsets of particles, as recently evidenced in photoreceptor mosaics in avian retina. Motivated by this biological finding, we present a statistical-mechanical model that rigorously achieves disordered multihyperuniform many-body systems by tuning interactions in binary mixtures of nonadditive hard-disk plasmas. We demonstrate that multihyperuniformity competes with phase separation and stabilizes a clustered phase. Our work provides a systematic means to generate disordered multihyperuniform solids, and hence lays the groundwork to explore their potentially unique photonic, phononic, electronic, and transport properties.
