Self-similar regimes of turbulence in weakly coupled plasmas under compression

Preferential turbulence enhancement in two-dimensional compressions

When initially isotropic three-dimensional (3D) turbulence is compressed along two dimensions, the compression supplies energy directly to the flow components in the compressed directions, while the flow component in the noncompressed direction experiences the effects of compression only indirectly through the nonlinearity of the hydrodynamic equations. Here we study such 2D compressions using numerical simulations. For initially isotropic turbulence, we find that the nonlinearity can be insufficient to maintain isotropy, with the energy components parallel to the compression coming to dominate the turbulent energy, with a number of consequences. Among these are the possibilities for stronger and more easily sustained growth of turbulent energy than in 3D compressions and for an increasing turbulent Mach number even in a compression without thermal losses.

Static and dynamic properties of multi-ionic plasma mixtures

Complex plasma mixtures with three or more components are often encountered in astrophysics or in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. For mixtures containing species with large differences in atomic number Z, the modeling needs to consider at the same time the kinetic theory for low-Z elements combined with the theory of strongly coupled plasma for high-Z elements, as well as all the intermediate situations that can appear in multicomponent systems. For such cases, we study the pair distribution functions, self-diffusions, mutual diffusion, and viscosity for ternary mixtures at extreme conditions. These quantities can be produced from first principles using orbital free molecular dynamics at the computational expense of very intensive simulations to reach good statistics. Utilizing the first-principles results as reference data, we assess the merit of a global analytic model for transport coefficients, "pseudo-ions in jellium" (PIJ), based on an isoelectronic assumption (iso-n_{e}). With a multicomponent hypernetted-chain integral equation, we verify the quality of the iso-n_{e} prescription for describing the static structure of the mixtures. This semianalytical modeling compares well with the simulation results and allows one to consider plasma mixtures not accessible to simulations. Applications are given for the mix of materials in ICF experiments. A reduction of a multicomponent mixture to an effective binary mixture is also established in the hydrodynamic limit and compared with PIJ estimations for ICF relevant mixtures.

Sudden diffusion of turbulent mixing layers in weakly coupled plasmas under compression

The rapid growth of viscosity driven by temperature increase in turbulent plasmas under compression induces a sudden dissipation of kinetic energy, eventually leading to the relaminarization of the flow [Davidovits and Fisch, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 105004 (2016)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.116.105004]. The interdiffusion between species is also greatly enhanced, so that mixing layers appearing at interfaces between different materials are subjected to strong dynamical modifications. The result is a competition between the vanishing turbulent diffusion and the expanding plasma microscopic diffusion. In direct numerical simulations with conditions relevant to inertial confinement fusion, we evidence regimes where compressed spherical mixing layers are quickly diffused during the relaminarization process. Using one and two-point turbulent statistics, we also detail how mixing heterogeneities are smoothed out.

Direct numerical simulation and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes modeling of the sudden viscous dissipation for multicomponent turbulence

Simulations of a turbulent multicomponent fluid mixture undergoing isotropic deformations are carried out to investigate the sudden viscous dissipation. This dissipative mechanism was originally demonstrated using simulations of an incompressible single-component fluid [S. Davidovits and N. J. Fisch, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 105004 (2016)10.1103/PhysRevLett.116.105004]. By accounting for the convective and diffusive transfer of various species, the current work aims to increase the physical fidelity of previous simulations and their relevance to inertial confinement fusion applications. Direct numerical simulations of the compressed fluid show that the sudden viscous dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy is unchanged from the single-component scenario. More importantly, the simulations demonstrate that the mass fraction variance and covariance for the various species also exhibit a sudden viscous decay. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations were carried out using the k-l model to assess its ability to reproduce the sudden viscous dissipation. Results show that the standard k-l formulation does not capture the sudden decay of turbulent kinetic energy, mass-fraction variance, and mass-fraction covariance for simulations with various compression and expansion rates, or different exponents for the power-law model of viscosity. A new formulation of the k-l model that is based on previous improvements to the k-ε family of models is proposed, which leads to consistently good agreement with the direct numerical simulations for all the isotropic deformations under consideration.

Self-consistent feedback mechanism for the sudden viscous dissipation of finite-Mach-number compressing turbulence

Previous work [Davidovits and Fisch, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 105004 (2016)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.116.105004] demonstrated that the compression of a turbulent field can lead to a sudden viscous dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), and that paper suggested this mechanism could potentially be used to design new fast-ignition schemes for inertial confinement fusion (ICF). We expand on previous work by accounting for finite Mach numbers, rather than relying on a zero-Mach-limit assumption as previously done. The finite-Mach-number formulation is necessary to capture a self-consistent feedback mechanism in which dissipated TKE increases the temperature of the system, which in turn modifies the viscosity and thus the TKE dissipation itself. Direct numerical simulations with a tenth-order accurate Padé scheme were carried out to analyze this self-consistent feedback loop for compressing turbulence. Results show that, for finite Mach numbers, the sudden viscous dissipation of TKE still occurs, for both the solenoidal and dilatational turbulent fields. As the domain is compressed, oscillations in dilatational TKE are encountered due to the highly oscillatory nature of the pressure dilatation. An analysis of the source terms for the internal energy shows that the mechanical-work term dominates the viscous turbulent dissipation. As a result, the effect of the suddenly dissipated TKE on temperature is minimal for the Mach numbers tested. Moreover, an analytical expression is derived that confirms the dissipated TKE does not significantly alter the temperature evolution for low Mach numbers, regardless of compression speed. The self-consistent feedback mechanism is thus quite weak for subsonic turbulence, which could limit its applicability for ICF.
