Impact of spherical nanoparticles on nematic order parameters

The Dominance of Pretransitional Effects in Liquid Crystal-Based Nanocolloids: Nematogenic 4-methoxybenzylidene-4'-butylaniline with Transverse Permanent Dipole Moment and BaTiO3 Nanoparticles

The report presents static, low-frequency, and dynamic dielectric properties in the isotropic liquid, nematic, and solid phases of MBBA and related nanocolloids with paraelectric BaTiO3 nanoparticles (spherical, d = 50 nm). MBBA (4-methoxybenzylidene-4'-butylaniline) is a liquid crystalline compound with a permanent dipole moment transverse to the long molecular axis. The distortions-sensitive analysis of the dielectric constant revealed its hidden pretransitional anomaly, strongly influenced by the addition of nanoparticles. The evolution of the dielectric constant in the nematic phase shows the split into two regions, with the crossover coinciding with the standard melting temperature. The 'universal' exponential-type behavior of the low-frequency contribution to the real part of the dielectric permittivity is found. The critical-like pretransitional behavior in the solid phase is also evidenced. This is explained by linking the Lipovsky model to the Mossotti catastrophe concept under quasi-negative pressure conditions. The explicit preference for the 'critical-like' evolution of the apparent activation enthalpy is worth stressing for dynamics. Finally, the long-range, 'critical-like' behavior of the dissipation factor (D = tgδ), covering the isotropic liquid and nematic phases, is shown.

Exploring Quantum Dots Size Impact at Phase Diagram and Electrooptical Properties in 8CB Liquid Crystal Soft-Nanocomposites

We explore the influence of functionalized core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots on the properties of the host liquid crystal compound 4-cyano-4'-octylbiphenyl (8CB) through electrooptical measurements. Two different diameters of quantum dots are used to investigate the size effects. We assess both the dispersion quality of the nanoparticles within the mixtures and the phase stability of the resulting anisotropic soft nanocomposites using polarizing optical microscopy. The temperature-mass fraction phase diagrams of the nanocomposites reveal deviations from the linear behavior in the phase stability lines. We measure the birefringence, the threshold voltage of the Fréedericksz transition, and the electrooptic switching times of the nanocomposite systems in planar cell geometry as functions of temperature, mass fraction, and diameter of the quantum dots. Beyond a critical mass fraction of the dopant nanoparticles, the nematic order is strongly reduced. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of the nanoparticle size and mass fraction on the viscoelastic coefficient. The anchoring energy at the interfaces of the liquid crystal with the cell and the quantum dots is estimated.

Rich phase transitions in strongly confined polymer-nanoparticle mixtures: Nematic ordering, crystallization, and liquid-liquid phase separation

We investigate the rich phase behavior of strongly confined semi-flexible (SFC) polymer-nanoparticle (NP) systems using the graphics processing unit accelerated Langevin dynamics simulation. Hard nanoparticles (HNP) that repel each other and ideal nanoparticles (INP) that do not interact with the same species are used as model additives to a strongly confined semiflexible polymer fluid. Both types of NPs exclude the monomer beads in the same way, but they have qualitatively different effects on the SFC isotropic-nematic (I-N) transition. For the total volume fraction ϕ_tot < 0.16, adding a low volume fraction of HNPs (ϕ_p) disrupts the long range nematic order of the polymers, whereas adding HNPs in a moderately packed system (0.16 < ϕ_tot < 0.32) facilitates polymer alignment due to the restricted polymer orientational degree of freedom. For dense packing (ϕ_tot > 0.32), polymers and NPs separate into layers along the slit height and the NPs form crystalline microdomains. In contrast, INP additives always promote inter-polymer alignment for low to moderate monomer volume fractions (ϕ_m). Furthermore, we found that INPs form a droplet-like fluid domain in dense nematic polymer systems.

The Influence of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on the Dynamic Properties of Nematic Liquid Crystals in Magnetic Field

This article aims to study the impact of carbon nanotube dispersions in liquid crystals. A theoretical model for the system's dynamics is presented, considering the elastic continuum theory and a planar alignment of liquid crystal molecules on the nanotube's surface. Experimental calculation of the relaxation times in the magnetic field was made for two cases: when the field was switched on (τon), and when it was switched off (τoff). The results indicate an increase of the relaxation time by about 25% when the magnetic field was switched off, and a smaller increase (about 10%) when the field was switched on, where both were in good agreement with the theoretical values.

Nanoparticle-controlled glassy dynamics in nematogen-based nanocolloids

Results of broad-band dielectric spectroscopy studies in liquid crystal (pentylcyanobiphenyl, 5CB)-based nanocolloids are presented. They reveal the strong impact of BaTiO_{3} nanoparticles on dynamics and uniaxial ordering. Studies were carried out in an extreme range of temperatures (∼150 K), including the supercooled nematic phase. For the latter, the unique "pretransitional" effect for dielectric constant on approaching solid state is reported. The distortion-sensitive analysis revealed super-Arrhenius dynamics but associated with critical-like behavior. In the isotropic phase, translational-orientational decoupling, unusual for the high temperature dynamic domain, was detected. It can be directly link to heterogeneities-prenematic fluctuations. The model linking the classical Landau-de Gennes approach with Imry-Ma arguments has been developed to discuss experimental results.

Impact of Weak Nanoparticle Induced Disorder on Nematic Ordering

Dilute mixtures of nanoparticles (NPs) and nematic liquid crystals (LCs) are considered. We focus on cases where NPs enforce a relatively weak disorder to the LC host. We use a Lebwohl-Lasher semi-microscopic-type modeling where we assume that NPs effectively act as a spatially-dependent external field on nematic spins. The orientational distribution of locally favoured “easy” orientations is described by a probabilistic distribution function P. By means of a mean field-type approach, we derive a self-consistent equation for the average degree of nematic uniaxial order parameter S as a function of the concentration p of NPs, NP-LC coupling strength and P. Using a simple step-like probability distribution shape, we obtain the S(p) dependence displaying a crossover behaviour between two different regimes which is in line with recent experimental observations. We also discuss a possible origin of commonly observed non-monotonous variations of the nematic-isotropic phase temperature coexistence width on varying p.
