Supercritical fluids behave as complex networks

Supercritical fluids play a key role in environmental, geological, and celestial processes, and are of great importance to many scientific and engineering applications. They exhibit strong variations in thermodynamic response functions, which has been hypothesized to stem from the microstructural behavior. However, a direct connection between thermodynamic conditions and the microstructural behavior, as described by molecular clusters, remains an outstanding issue. By utilizing a first-principles-based criterion and self-similarity analysis, we identify energetically localized molecular clusters whose size distribution and connectivity exhibit self-similarity in the extended supercritical phase space. We show that the structural response of these clusters follows a complex network behavior whose dynamics arises from the energetics of isotropic molecular interactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a hidden variable network model can accurately describe the structural and dynamical response of supercritical fluids. These results highlight the need for constitutive models and provide a basis to relate the fluid microstructure to thermodynamic response functions.

Sandpile cascades on oscillator networks: The BTW model meets Kuramoto

Cascading failures abound in complex systems and the Bak-Tang-Weisenfeld (BTW) sandpile model provides a theoretical underpinning for their analysis. Yet, it does not account for the possibility of nodes having oscillatory dynamics, such as in power grids and brain networks. Here, we consider a network of Kuramoto oscillators upon which the BTW model is unfolding, enabling us to study how the feedback between the oscillatory and cascading dynamics can lead to new emergent behaviors. We assume that the more out-of-sync a node is with its neighbors, the more vulnerable it is and lower its load-carrying capacity accordingly. Also, when a node topples and sheds load, its oscillatory phase is reset at random. This leads to novel cyclic behavior at an emergent, long timescale. The system spends the bulk of its time in a synchronized state where load builds up with minimal cascades. Yet, eventually, the system reaches a tipping point where a large cascade triggers a "cascade of larger cascades," which can be classified as a dragon king event. The system then undergoes a short transient back to the synchronous, buildup phase. The coupling between capacity and synchronization gives rise to endogenous cascade seeds in addition to the standard exogenous ones, and we show their respective roles. We establish the phenomena from numerical studies and develop the accompanying mean-field theory to locate the tipping point, calculate the load in the system, determine the frequency of the long-time oscillations, and find the distribution of cascade sizes during the buildup phase.

Analysis of the Football Transfer Market Network

Using publicly available data from the football database transfermarkt.co.uk, it is possible to construct a trade network between football clubs. This work regards the network of the flow of transfer fees between European top league clubs from eight countries between 1992 and 2020 to analyse the network of each year's transfer market. With the transfer fees as weights, the market can be represented as a weighted network in addition to the classic binary network approach. This opens up the possibility to study various topological quantities of the network, such as the degree and disparity distributions, the small-world property and different clustering measures. This article shows that these quantities stayed rather constant during the almost three decades of transfer market activity, even despite massive changes in the overall market volume.

Network isolators inhibit failure spreading in complex networks

In our daily lives, we rely on the proper functioning of supply networks, from power grids to water transmission systems. A single failure in these critical infrastructures can lead to a complete collapse through a cascading failure mechanism. Counteracting strategies are thus heavily sought after. In this article, we introduce a general framework to analyse the spreading of failures in complex networks and demostrate that not only decreasing but also increasing the connectivity of the network can be an effective method to contain damages. We rigorously prove the existence of certain subgraphs, called network isolators, that can completely inhibit any failure spreading, and we show how to create such isolators in synthetic and real-world networks. The addition of selected links can thus prevent large scale outages as demonstrated for power transmission grids.

The transsortative structure of networks

Network topologies can be highly non-trivial, due to the complex underlying behaviours that form them. While past research has shown that some processes on networks may be characterized by local statistics describing nodes and their neighbours, such as degree assortativity, these quantities fail to capture important sources of variation in network structure. We define a property called transsortativity that describes correlations among a node's neighbours. Transsortativity can be systematically varied, independently of the network's degree distribution and assortativity. Moreover, it can significantly impact the spread of contagions as well as the perceptions of neighbours, known as the majority illusion. Our work improves our ability to create and analyse more realistic models of complex networks.

Interevent time distribution, burst, and hybrid percolation transition

Understanding of a hybrid percolation transitions (HPTs) induced by cluster coalescence, exhibiting a jump in the giant cluster size and a critical behavior of finite clusters, is fundamental and intriguing. Here, we uncover the underlying mechanism using the so-called restricted-random network model, in which clusters are ranked by size and partitioned into small- and large-cluster sets. As clusters are merged and their rankings are updated, they may move back and forth across the set boundary. The intervals of these crossings exhibit a self-organized critical (SOC) behavior with two power-law exponents. During this process, a bump is formed and eliminated in the cluster size distribution, characterizing the criticality of the HPT. This SOC behavior is in contrast to the critical branching process, which governs the avalanche dynamics of the HPT in the pruning process. Finally, we find that a burst of such crossing events occurs and signals the upcoming abrupt transition.
