Fluctuation-induced dispersion forces on thin DNA films

In this work, the calculation of Casimir forces across thin DNA films is carried out based on the Lifshitz theory. The variations of Casimir forces due to the DNA thicknesses, volume fractions of containing water, covering media, and substrates are investigated. For a DNA film suspended in air or water, the Casimir force is attractive, and its magnitude increases with decreasing thickness of DNA films and the water volume fraction. For DNA films deposited on a dielectric (silica) substrate, the Casimir force is attractive for the air environment. However, the Casimir force shows unusual features in a water environment. Under specific conditions, switching sign of the Casimir force from attractive to repulsive can be achieved by increasing the DNA-film thickness. Finally, the Casimir force for DNA films deposited on a metallic substrate is investigated. The Casimir force is dominated by the repulsive interactions at a small DNA-film thickness for both the air and water environments. In a water environment, the Casimir force turns out to be attractive for a large DNA-film thickness, and a stable Casimir equilibrium can be found. The influences of electrolyte screening on the Casimir pressure of DNA films are also discussed at the end. In addition to the adhesion stability, our finding could be applicable to the problems of condensation and decondensation of DNA, due to fluctuation-induced dispersion forces.

Attractive and Repulsive Fluctuation-Induced Pressure in Peptide Films Deposited on Semiconductor Substrates

We consider the fluctuation-induced (Casimir) pressure in peptide films deposited on GaAs, Ge, and ZnS substrates which are either in a dielectric or metallic state. The calculations of the Casimir pressure are performed in the framework of the fundamental Lifshitz theory employing the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivities of all involved materials. The electric conductivity of semiconductor substrates is taken into account within the experimentally and thermodynamically consistent approach. According to our results, the Casimir pressure in peptide films deposited on dielectric-type semiconductor substrates vanishes for some definite film thickness and is repulsive for thinner and attractive for thicker films. The dependence of this effect on the fraction of water in the film and on the static dielectric permittivity of the semiconductor substrate is determined. For the metallic-type semiconductor substrates, the Casimir pressure in peptide coatings is shown to be always repulsive. The possible applications of these results to the problem of stability of thin coatings in microdevices are discussed.

Extractable quantum work from a two-mode Gaussian state in a noisy channel

We study a Szilard engine based on a Gaussian state of a system consisting of two bosonic modes placed in a noisy channel. As the initial state of the system is taken an entangled squeezed thermal state, and the quantum work is extracted by performing a measurement on one of the two modes. We use the Markovian Kossakowski-Lindblad master equation for describing the time evolution of the open system and the quantum work definition based on the second order Rényi entropy to simulate the engine. We also study the information-work efficiency of the Szilard engine as a function of the system parameters. The efficiency is defined as the ratio of the extractable work averaged over the measurement angle and the erasure work, which is proportional to the information stored in the system. We show that the extractable quantum work increases with the temperature of the reservoir and the squeezing between the modes, average numbers of thermal photons and frequencies of the modes. The work increases also with the strength of the measurement, attaining the maximal values in the case of a heterodyne detection. The extractable work is decreasing by increasing the squeezing parameter of the noisy channel and it oscillates with the phase of the squeezed thermal reservoir. The efficiency mostly has a similar behavior with the extractable quantum work evolution. However information-work efficiency decreases with temperature, while the quantity of the extractable work increases.

Aggregation Properties of Albumin in Interacting with Magnetic Fluids

In this study, interactions of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles with serum albumin biomolecules in aqueous solutions were considered. The studies were conducted with the laser correlation spectroscopy and optical analysis of dehydrated films. It was shown that the addition of magnetite to an albumin solution at low concentrations of up to 10-6 g/L led to the formation of aggregates with sizes of up to 300 nm in the liquid phase and an increase in the number of spiral structures in the dehydrated films, which indicated an increase in their stability. With a further increase in the magnetite concentration in the solution (from 10-4 g/L), the magnetic particles stuck together and to albumin, thus forming aggregates with sizes larger than 1000 nm. At the same time, the formation of morphological structures in molecular films was disturbed, and a characteristic decrease in their stability occurred. Most stable films were formed at low concentrations of magnetic nanoparticles (less than 10-4 g/L) when small albumin-magnetic nanoparticle aggregates were formed. These results are important for characterizing the interaction processes of biomolecules with magnetic nanoparticles and can be useful for predicting the stability of biomolecular films with the inclusion of magnetite particles.

First-Principles Simulation of Dielectric Function in Biomolecules

The dielectric spectra of complex biomolecules reflect the molecular heterogeneity of the proteins and are particularly important for the calculations of electrostatic (Coulomb) and electrodynamic (van der Waals) interactions in protein physics. The dielectric response of the proteins can be decomposed into different components depending on the size, structure, composition, locality, and environment of the protein in general. We present a new robust simulation method anchored in rigorous ab initio quantum mechanical calculations of explicit atomistic models, without any indeterminate parameters to compute and gain insight into the dielectric spectra of small proteins under different conditions. We implement this methodology to a polypeptide RGD-4C (1FUV) in different environments, and the SD1 domain in the spike protein of SARS-COV-2. Two peaks at 5.2-5.7 eV and 14.4-15.2 eV in the dielectric absorption spectra are observed for 1FUV and SD1 in vacuum as well as in their solvated and salted models.
