Faceted patterns and anomalous surface roughening driven by long-range temporally correlated noise

Finite-size and finite-time scaling for kinetic rough interfaces

We consider discrete models of kinetic rough interfaces that exhibit space-time scale invariance in height-height correlation. We use the generic scaling theory of Ramasco et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2199 (2000)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.84.2199] to confirm that the dynamical structure factor of the height profile can uniquely characterize the underlying dynamics. We apply both finite-size and finite-time scaling methods that systematically allow an estimation of the critical exponents and the scaling functions, eventually establishing the universality class accurately. The finite-size scaling analysis offers an alternative way to characterize the anomalous rough interfaces. As an illustration, we investigate a class of self-organized interface models in random media with extremal dynamics. The isotropic version shows a faceted pattern and belongs to the same universality class (as shown numerically) as the Sneppen model (version A). We also examine an anisotropic version of the Sneppen model and suggest that the model belongs to the universality class of the tensionless Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (tKPZ) equation in one dimension.

Roughening of the anharmonic elastic interface in correlated random media

We study the roughening properties of the anharmonic elastic interface in the presence of temporally correlated noise. The model can be seen as a generalization of the anharmonic Larkin model, recently introduced by Purrello, Iguain, and Kolton [Phys. Rev. E 99, 032105 (2019)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.99.032105], to investigate the effect of higher-order corrections to linear elasticity in the fate of interfaces. We find analytical expressions for the critical exponents as a function of the anharmonicity index n, the noise correlator range θ∈[0,1/2], and dimension d. In d=1 we find that the interface becomes faceted and exhibits anomalous scaling for θ>1/4 for any degree of anharmonicity n>1. Analytical expressions for the anomalous exponents α_{loc} and κ are obtained and compared with a numerical integration of the model. Our theoretical results show that anomalous roughening cannot exist for this model in dimensions d>1.

Synthetic Data in Quantitative Scanning Probe Microscopy

Synthetic data are of increasing importance in nanometrology. They can be used for development of data processing methods, analysis of uncertainties and estimation of various measurement artefacts. In this paper we review methods used for their generation and the applications of synthetic data in scanning probe microscopy, focusing on their principles, performance, and applicability. We illustrate the benefits of using synthetic data on different tasks related to development of better scanning approaches and related to estimation of reliability of data processing methods. We demonstrate how the synthetic data can be used to analyse systematic errors that are common to scanning probe microscopy methods, either related to the measurement principle or to the typical data processing paths.

Effects of turbulent environment and random noise on self-organized critical behavior: Universality versus nonuniversality

Self-organized criticality in the Hwa-Kardar model of a "running sandpile" [Phys. Rev. Lett. 62, 1813 (1989)10.1103/PhysRevLett.62.1813; Phys. Rev. A 45, 7002 (1992)10.1103/PhysRevA.45.7002] with a turbulent motion of the environment taken into account is studied with the field theoretic renormalization group (RG). The turbulent flow is modeled by the synthetic d-dimensional generalization of the anisotropic Gaussian velocity ensemble with finite correlation time, introduced by Avellaneda and Majda [Commun. Math. Phys. 131, 381 (1990)10.1007/BF02161420; Commun. Math. Phys. 146, 139 (1992)10.1007/BF02099212]. The Hwa-Kardar model with time-independent (spatially quenched) random noise is considered alongside the original model with white noise. The aim of the present paper is to explore fixed points of the RG equations which determine the possible types of universality classes (regimes of critical behavior of the system) and critical dimensions of the measurable quantities. Our calculations demonstrate that influence of the type of random noise is extremely large: in contrast to the case of white noise where the system possesses three fixed points, the case of spatially quenched noise involves four fixed points with overlapping stability regions. This means that in the latter case the critical behavior of the system depends not only on the global parameters of the system, which is the usual case, but also on the initial values of the charges (coupling constants) of the system. These initial conditions determine the specific fixed point which will be reached by the RG flow. Since now the critical properties of the system are not defined strictly by its parameters, the situation may be interpreted as a universality violation. Such systems are not forbidden, but they are rather rare. It is especially interesting that the same model without turbulent motion of the environment does not predict this nonuniversal behavior and demonstrates the usual one with prescribed universality classes instead [J. Stat. Phys. 178, 392 (2020)10.1007/s10955-019-02436-8].

Extensive numerical simulations of surface growth with temporally correlated noise

Surface growth processes can be significantly affected by long-range temporal correlations. In this work, we perform extensive numerical simulations of a (1+1)- and (2+1)-dimensional ballistic deposition (BD) model driven by temporally correlated noise, which is regarded as the temporal correlated Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. Our results are compared with the existing theoretical predictions and numerical simulations. When the temporal correlation exponent is above a certain threshold, BD surfaces develop gradually faceted patterns. We find that the temporal correlated BD system displays nontrivial dynamic properties, and the characteristic roughness exponents satisfy α≃α_{loc}<α_{s} in (1+1) dimensions, which is beyond the existing dynamic scaling classifications.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with temporally correlated noise: A nonperturbative renormalization group approach

We investigate the universal behavior of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with temporally correlated noise. The presence of time correlations in the microscopic noise breaks the statistical tilt symmetry, or Galilean invariance, of the original KPZ equation with δ-correlated noise (denoted SR-KPZ). Thus, it is not clear whether the KPZ universality class is preserved in this case. Conflicting results exist in the literature, some advocating that it is destroyed even in the limit of infinitesimal temporal correlations, while others find that it persists up to a critical range of such correlations. Using nonperturbative and functional renormalization group techniques, we study the influence of two types of temporal correlators of the noise: a short-range one with a typical timescale τ, and a power-law one with a varying exponent θ. We show that for the short-range noise with any finite τ, the symmetries (the Galilean symmetry, and the time-reversal one in 1+1 dimension) are dynamically restored at large scales, such that the long-distance and long-time properties are governed by the SR-KPZ fixed point. In the presence of a power-law noise, we find that the SR-KPZ fixed point is still stable for θ below a critical value θ_{th}, in accordance with previous renormalization group results, while a long-range fixed point controls the critical scaling for θ>θ_{th}, and we evaluate the θ-dependent critical exponents at this long-range fixed point, in both 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions. While the results in 1+1 dimension can be compared with previous studies, no other prediction was available in 2+1 dimension. We finally report in 1+1 dimension the emergence of anomalous scaling in the long-range phase.
