Intrashell electron-interaction-mediated photoformation of hollow atoms near threshold

Coupled Electron-Nuclear Dynamics Induced and Monitored with Femtosecond Soft X-ray Pulses in the Amino Acid Glycine

The coupling of electronic and nuclear motion in polyatomic molecules is at the heart of attochemistry. The molecular properties, transient structures, and reaction mechanism of these many-body quantum objects are defined on the level of electrons and ions by molecular wave functions and their coherent superposition, respectively. In the present contribution, we monitor nonadiabatic quantum wave packet dynamics during molecular charge motion by reconstructing both the oscillatory charge density distribution and the characteristic time-dependent nuclear configuration coordinate from time-resolved Auger electron spectroscopic data recorded in previous studies on glycine molecules [Schwickert et al. Sci. Adv. 2022, 8, eabn6848]. The electronic and nuclear motion on the femtosecond time scale was induced and probed in kinematically complete soft X-ray experiments at the FLASH free-electron laser facility. The detailed analysis of amplitude, instantaneous phase, and instantaneous frequency of the propagating many-body wave packet during its lifecycle provides unprecedented insight into dynamical processes beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We are confident that the refined experimental data evaluation helps to develop new theoretical tools to describe time-dependent molecular wave functions in complicated but ubiquitous non-Born-Oppenheimer photochemical conditions.

Triple-core-hole states produced in the interaction of solid-state density plasmas with a relativistic femtosecond optical laser

Extremely exotic dense matter states can be produced in the interaction of a relativistic femtosecond optical laser with a solid density matter. Here we theoretically investigate triple-core-hole (TCH) states produced by an intense polychromatic x-ray field formed by hot electrons in the interaction of a relativistic femtosecond optical laser with a thin silver foil. X-ray emission spectra of solid-density silver plasmas show unambiguously the production of TCH states at an electron temperature of a few hundreds of eV and radiative temperature of 1–3 keV of the polychromatic x-ray field. Practical calculations show that the emissivity originating from the TCH states exceeds that from the single- and double-core-hole states in Ne-like Ag³⁷⁺ at electron temperature of ~500 eV and radiative temperature of ~1500 eV. For the neighbouring ionization stages of Ag³⁶⁺ and Ag³⁸⁺, TCH emissivity is roughly equivalent or comparable to that from the single- and double-core-hole states. Present work deepens our insight into investigation of the properties of extremely exotic states, which is important in high energy density physics, astrophysics and laser physics.

Large molecules reveal a linear length scaling for double photoionization

We have measured the ratio of doubly to singly charged parent ions of benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, and pentacene using monochromatized synchrotron radiation up to 30 eV above the corresponding threshold. Our measurements show a striking similarity between the ratio of doubly charged to all parent ions and the ratio for helium. Moreover, the magnitudes of the ratios for these molecules scale linearly with their lengths with an amazing accuracy. A high ratio, i.e., a high relative double-photoionization probability, makes a molecule an important source of low-energy electrons that can promote radiation damage of biomolecules [B. Boudaïffa et al., Science 287, 1658 (2000)].

Evidence of single-photon two-site core double ionization of C2H2 molecules

We observe the formation in a single-photon transition of two core holes, each at a different carbon atom of the C2H2 molecule. At a photon energy of 770.5 eV, the probability of this 2-site core double ionization amounts to 1.6 ± 0.4% of the 1-site core double ionization. A simple theoretical model based on the knockout mechanism gives reasonable agreement with experiment. Spectroscopy and Auger decays of the associated double core hole states are also investigated.

K(h)α1,2 x-ray hypersatellite line broadening as a signature of K-shell double photoionization followed by outer-shell ionization and excitation

We propose a novel approach for the theoretical analysis of the photoinduced high-resolution K(h)α(1,2) x-ray hypersatellite spectra, which allows us to obtain reliable values of lifetimes of the doubly K-shell ionized states and fundamental information about the relative role of K-shell double photoionization (DPI) mechanisms. It is demonstrated for the first time that the K(h)α(1,2) hypersatellite natural line broadening observed for selected metal atoms with 20 ≤ Z ≤ 30 can be well reproduced quantitatively by taking into account the influences of the open-shell valence configuration (adopted from predictions of the band-structure method) and the outer-shell ionization and excitation following the DPI process.

Separation of two-electron photoexcited atomic processes near the inner-shell threshold

By means of a high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy, we have for the first time separated spectral features pertaining to different two-electron atomic processes in the vicinity of an inner-shell threshold. Contributions of shakeoff, shakeup, and resonant 1s3p double excitations were extracted from the Ar KM-M{2,3}M x-ray satellite line intensity measured as a function of photon energy from [1s3p] double excitation threshold to saturation. The isolated [1s3p]nln'l' excitation spectrum is critically compared to the outcome of the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock model with relaxation.

Physical mechanisms and scaling laws of K-shell double photoionization

We report on the photon energy dependence of the K-shell double photoionization (DPI) of Mg, Al, and Si. The DPI cross sections were derived from high-resolution measurements of x-ray spectra following the radiative decay of the K-shell double vacancy states. Our data evince the relative importance of the final-state electron-electron interaction to the DPI. By comparing the double-to-single K-shell photoionization cross-section ratios for neutral atoms with convergent close-coupling calculations for He-like ions, the effect of outer shell electrons on the K-shell DPI process is assessed. Universal scaling of the DPI cross sections with the effective nuclear charge for neutral atoms is revealed.
