Exploring energy-time entanglement using geometric phase

Measuring azimuthal and radial modes of photons

With the emergence of the field of quantum communications, the appropriate choice of photonic degrees of freedom used for encoding information is of paramount importance. Highly precise techniques for measuring the polarisation, frequency, and arrival time of a photon have been developed. However, the transverse spatial degree of freedom still lacks a measurement scheme that allows the reconstruction of its full transverse structure with a simple implementation and a high level of accuracy. Here we show a method to measure the azimuthal and radial modes of Laguerre-Gaussian beams with a greater than 99 % accuracy, using a single phase screen. We compare our technique with previous commonly used methods and demonstrate the significant improvements it presents for quantum key distribution and state tomography of high-dimensional quantum states of light. Moreover, our technique can be readily extended to any arbitrary family of spatial modes, such as mutually unbiased bases, Hermite-Gauss, and Ince-Gauss. Our scheme will significantly enhance existing quantum and classical communication protocols that use the spatial structure of light, as well as enable fundamental experiments on spatial-mode entanglement to reach their full potential.

Geometric phase morphology of Jones matrices

We demonstrate an innovative technique based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase that can be used to determine whether an optical system characterized by a Jones matrix is homogeneous or inhomogeneous, containing orthogonal or nonorthogonal eigenpolarizations, respectively. Homogeneous systems have a symmetric geometric phase morphology showing line dislocations and sets of polarization states with an equal geometric phase. In contrast, the morphology of inhomogeneous systems exhibits phase singularities, where the Pancharatnam-Berry phase is undetermined. The results show an alternative to extract polarization properties such as diattenuation and retardance, and can be used to study the transformation of space-variant polarized beams.

Higher order Pancharatnam-Berry phase and the angular momentum of light

The first experimental demonstration of a new Pancharatnam-Berry phase for light beams with spatially inhomogeneous, or vector, states of polarization referred to as the higher-order Pancharatnam-Berry phase is presented. This new geometric phase is proportional to light's total angular momentum, a sum of spin and higher dimensional orbital angular momentum, sharply contrasting the well-known Pancharatnam-Berry phase associated with the plane wave state of polarization of a spatially homogeneous light beam. The higher-order Pancharatnam-Berry phase is directly related to the rotational symmetry of a vortex-bearing electromagnetic field, associated with the rotational frequency shift of a light beam, and has implications in quantum information science as well as other physical systems such as electron vortex beams.

Universal description of geometric phases in higher-order optical modes bearing orbital angular momentum

We study geometric phases that arise from (cyclic) transformations of the transverse spatial structure of paraxial optical modes. Our approach involves bosonic ladder operators that, in the spirit of the quantum-mechanical harmonic oscillator, generate sets of transverse optical modes. It applies to modes of all orders in a very natural way and provides a universal geometric interpretation of the phase shifts acquired by nonastigmatic modes under typical experimental conditions.

Photon energy entanglement characterization by electronic transition interference

We propose photon energy qubits and schemes for photon energy entanglement characterization. Bell inequality violation for energy qubits and complete Bell state analysis are demonstrated theoretically. Photon energy superposition state detection is performed by a two-photon absorption interferometer based on electron transition path interference. The scheme can be realized at room-temperature by two-level systems and semiconductor devices.
